US Painters who accept credit cards: read this
If you accept credit cards using a card reader (square, intuit, paypal, etc), you should be familiar with changes rolling out in October 2015 to US credit cards. Cards will now come equipped with a microchip which is harder to counterfeit, and you'll need a new chip reader.
Aside from a change in your card reader, there is a change in liability. Currently, if someone fraudulently uses a card to purchase goods or services, the bank is liable. After this change happens, if you didn't run the card with a new chip reader, your business could be out that money.
Yes, October 2015 is over a year away, but it's good to have a head's up on upcoming changes.

Yes AND more than likely, square will be charging for that reader if you are not a volume user- BUT I am sure they will keep it reasonable.
Re: US Painters who accept credit cards: read this
Is volume determined by the amount per transaction or the number of transactions in a given cycle period, Anyone know? Also can the same reader be used for two separate business? Ex. My husband is a plumber and we are thinking about getting a reader for him, could I use it for facepainting as well and have the accounts separate while using the same reader but have the transactions combined count towards the "volume" requirement?
These are prob questions I have to pose to them but if anyone knows....

Do you know if these new chip readers will be available before October 2015?

The current readers can be used for different devices, as you log into your account on the phone/tablet - the device only reads the card.
Edited to add: This is the time when you can use the word "dongle" with impunity - as the Square Reader is also known as the 'dongle.'

good to know! Might effect Canada the same way, we'll see.
Re: US Painters who accept credit cards: read this
And the answer is..... Square Reader for Chip Cards $29.00
Which is not bad. I think the Pay pal chip device with pin pad is like $79 in the UK so.... It's worth it.
