Head to keyboard syndrome
Just needing a moment to vent. I've been trying to get my website going (www.thouartbeautiful.com) and I am so frustrated! I contacted a friend to help me get the website up, and we spent two hours discussing archetype and business image. I thought I was setting up a meeting to help me learn to get a simple site up...now I'm broke and still not much to show for it. What really bothered me was at the end of the session, when I was trying to direct him to help me with simple web page setup, his girlfriend started to get miffed about them having to be somewhere and still had to make dinner. I felt so uninvited...I paid for the time and now I was almost in tears about giving him my business, nothing to show, and now 80 bucks lighter and feeling pushed out. So I consulted another friend of mine, which led to me trying to pick and buy a theme online. I found 1, bought it, only to find out it was the wrong kind. Found another, more expensive, and bought it and it should work but I am so lost in techie jargon...it's supposed to be simple every one says...so close to just throwing my computer in the trash can... Now I'm stuck, broke and really frustrated. Going downtown and hoping to watch the pros create some zombie magic for the zombie run and hopefully I will gain some enlightenment to make me want to try this web design thing again...*sigh*
Re: Head to keyboard syndrome
Sending good vibes for being able to do this on your own. I couldn't design one from scratch, either.
I know this doesn't help now, but I got my site from Yahoosmallbusiness because of recommendation from a great forum member here. I'm using one of their free pre-made templates. You can have a working site in 30 minutes. I see they have a special $1.79 per month. Paying someone to help you may be more expensive than that price for the whole year. If I got the money to pay someone, one day I would like a site with fancy stuff. But for now this is just fine.

Thank you MeeMee, I will keep that in mind I'm really hoping I can figure out this new theme I downloaded so its not a waste of money I don't really have at this point. I just need to go and reboot
Re: Head to keyboard syndrome
So sorry to hear. Web design is hard to say the least. I use iconosites.com. They have premarital templates and pretty easy to change out the heading photos if you use a template that has one. And it's free! You can view what my site looks like to get an idea. The down side is that i still cannot figure out how to get it to show on BING... I wish you the best!
Re: Head to keyboard syndrome
Sorry to hear you had such a negative experience. Its not the easiest thing to do and you may have to read a lot of instructions, but if you take your time, you will figure it out and get it put together the way you want it to look. I am completely through asking "friends" to do anything for my business. I find it easier to work with people who think of me as a client and don't question my reasons for wanting something this way or that way. Good luck to you, don't give up, you will get it!
Re: Head to keyboard syndrome
I feel for you. I had such a mental block I avoided doing a web-site for YEARS. Try go-daddy, it really IS not such a difficult walk through. I am no longer subservient to leeches who want my money for doing nearly nothing...
Re: Head to keyboard syndrome
Thank you Ruby, I don't know if this may help you, but my site wasn't showing up in google and it was a SEO setting of some kind...really don't know tho, lol.
Veelux, I'll keep at it but it does get me frustrated fast. I think I have learned my lesson on using friends, and I guess since you put it that way it was something I had to learn I suppose.
Thanks Anniel, I'll try to see if that may help. I'm really glad to hear the feedback, I guess it's just been an overly tiring day and just feel spent. I don't blame him that we had a misunderstanding but it was supposed to be pretty simple I thought and I guess that's where I need to have a more hands on approach to this techie stuff.
Thanks all I'll get it going I'm sure.

Re: Head to keyboard syndrome
Although I will be changing/improving my website soon with the help of a dear friend who is very business/marketing savvy, my website is through Wix.com and it is extremely user friendly....
Translation: Even I can do it.

I use Yahoo Small Business too... VERY easy and trouble free.
I've had my site with them since January 2005.

Re: Head to keyboard syndrome
Here another one, who's website is on hold.... We have registered a domain name (sorry if my English isn't correct):
www.creabellafaceart.nl
But hubby is still looking for a package or something to build the site with and isn't too difficult for me as a noob, to work with. My hubby works with computers for a living... But he doesn't seem to rush with looking for it, while I am very impatient
I will have to ask him again..... In the meantime I am working on the texts I want to use on the site.

Re: Head to keyboard syndrome
If I can give you an advice, as I am a webdesigner, a real one it was my full time job working for a company before I became a face painter.
Look at my website... it shows.
http://www.fancifulfaces.com
Before paying anyone, for web class, web design... look at their own web if they have one! There is way to much of people pretending they are webdesigner and they are obviously not...
80 bucks! You got ripped of, I wouldn't call that person a friend!
Now as you're not techie, you're just starting out your business, you do not have money to invest, you should go yes for simple solutions.
I see you are using wordpress, and you bought a domain name. So, you are already somewhere...
Is the template the one you wanna use? Changing and updating a template is the hardest part on a CMS (Content Managing System).
Hadding your content or images should be quite easy with Wordpress.
It can feel overwhelming but here is a link with all the documentation for Wordpress : http://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page
I would love to propose you to help you! But I do not have that much of free time... But I could answer a few question if needed!

Re: Head to keyboard syndrome
Thank you all so much for all your input, I'm definitely trying to do my homework thank you so much Yoko, yes it does show some definite handiwork! I think the link will be exactly where I need to begin. I keep hearing how wonderful Wordpress is for the newbie designer and would like to make it work if I can.
Re: Head to keyboard syndrome
So sorry you're having all that trouble, I know how frustrating it can be. That's why I have my Yahoo business site. It was cheap and I understood how to do it and then they did all the work publishing it etc.!
Re: Head to keyboard syndrome
Creabella, I'm using webklik, it's very simple and not expensive!
I just love it!
Please contact me if you want to know more about it, I'll explain to you in Dutch!
