Hello,

NC state asks you for both. Is this something that I should get immediately. I already have my name registered and insurance. Do you think I can wait until I have more profit. Right now I have too many expenses. I have to pay $75 for home occupancy and $50 for the license.Mad

I would make sure you are required to have this before spending the money. Does it matter if you never operate your business out of your home (for example, you're at gigs, not in your home office)?

They said that if I call, did paperwork, invoices etc. at home  then I needed the permit.

Right now I am like...get a glitter tattoo kit for my daughter or ... pay all this. For me it would be better to earn some money first and then pay.

Do clients, or, when you participate in a festival where you have to put your tent and all; require you the license? Thanks:confused:

Lee, I don't know about NC. This is not a requirement for my state of OR.

Legally, if you need it to operate a business, you need it. If you choose not to get it, I have no idea what the penalty would be if you were caught or the frequency of which such things are investigated. That would factor into my decision if I were you. Some things are just cheaper to pay for now than risk paying a penalty for later.

All businesses have start-up costs and legal/paperwork is one of them. If you were a restaurant, you wouldn't realistically be able to open without the proper licensing. As a face painter, you're right, you can choose to ignore the legal requirements in your state with the hopes that you don't get caught.

Personally, I'd pay for it, but others may have different opinion. For me, insurance and a business license are a matter of me taking pride and trying to elevate the industry. I can advertise to set myself apart with the professionalism, references, and legal requirements met. As a result, I get better paying gigs that easily cover my business costs.

Also, I choose to charge enough per hour that I CAN cover these costs rather than having to choose between purchasing inventory (glitter tattoos) and paying for the basics...but that's just me. Wink

Thanks so much gilded cat. I am going to review all this, NC is a very strict state. I want to do everything very professional as I have done. I am not going to mess up with that. Thanks for your valuable opinion.Wink
