Business License?

So, I've been running my business for a few years, but I've only really been doing small, private parties around my neighborhood, so I have yet to register for a business license. I had done some subcontracting work, but filed the taxes under my personal information. All of a sudden, I am getting contracted to do larger, public events (i.e. I was just contacted by Nordstrom's to paint at an event they are having). Do you think it necessary to register for a business license? I live in Virginia Beach, Virginia, if that helps. Thank you!

In my area, it depended on whether you had people come to your location, whether you put a sign in your location and how much $ you made in a year. You will have to check your location as Perry said. It is different for everyone.

Yep, call your city hall. I called mine and was told I don't need one for this type of business.

Most companies ask you to complete a W9. Using your ss# and "sole proprietor" usually works. again....verify
