What to Wear????
I typically have on paint splattered T and jeans, plus apron and hair piece. Rose, Bow ect. I do also paint myself. I have had a clown phobia and cannot take up a clown persona.... and suggestions???
Re: What to Wear????
I wear a tsgirt with my business info on the back and name on front. A black half apron with comp name, jeans and hit pink flowers on my hair. I also had a clown phobia but I have a nice costume I use at the Ronald McDonald house and at volunteer events. I find most of the time when I paint in the clown outfit I don't really need a persona, just a bit silly with the kids. If you asked me to jyluat clown, I would have no idea.
Re: What to Wear????
I have seen ladies make aprons with their logos on it, that way you can wear pretty much any color shirt with jeans, or nicer pants for a nice event, and not worry about getting it dirty.
I don't paint often, but when I do -- I wear jeans and a bright colored shirt.
I have the start of a clown costume--but have only wore it for halloween so far!

Re: What to Wear????
This is a vintage circus shirt I got at an auction that I wear when I facepaint. All the kids in the city know me from it, so I make sure to wear it everytime. But I like the apron with the logo on it. I must do that!!
Re: What to Wear????
My crew wears company tees, here's mine:
I think customers like seeing someone showing up with some sort of uniform even if it's just a t-shirt.

Re: What to Wear????
I wear black and an apron, sometimes blue, sometimes black. I want to blend in, look professional, and let my painting speak for itself. My kids work with me at bigger events (thy are all grown, or nearly grown) and for them, they wear black slacks, and black tee shirts that have face painting pics and my website on them. I totally agree with Cheryl, clients like to be able to tell that you are a face painter, it is a personal choice if you want to do that with more colorful atire or with a more buttoned down approach. I think it is a matter of preferance, just look like you are there to be a professional and be recognizable as a face painter and business person.
One of my daughters is becoming a clown right now, the clown community take this process very seriously. To them, you are a clown (full on character development) or you are not...so there is no "dressing as a clown" and some clowns can get pretty defensive about it. The deeper my daughter gets into this, the more I understand it. It is a lot of work to be a clown.

Re: What to Wear????
Depends on the venue... In the summer at PPF, I wear a long flowy dress that is WAY colorful!! Other times I wear a black tee and a fun apron... If I am going to a bday gig, I try to match the theme a bit... I am always changing it up... I also make cute hair bows/headbands... so I am alwaying wearing one of those too!
Re: What to Wear????
I made my apron, which I think of as a shield, since I am shy. and I dawn flowers in my hair. PPl often ask for a character, but I do not feel I can pull this off. I would like to think my painting speaks for itself. I am still fairly new. I do find my self in a mode where I am not as social as I should be and am trying to correct this.
Re: What to Wear????
My company name is "Color Me Wild" and my logo is all different animal prints. I found a really cute zebra print apron which has become my "uniform". I clip a flower to the strap for a pop of color, and it works!
Re: What to Wear????
I have 5 artists in my little company and we have a uniform shirt, and then we wear black or dark colored slacks. (and we have our website on the back in bling too) We also generally put a flashy ribbon, flower, headband, etc. in our hair. We sometimes will put on a little eye art too. I have made a conscience decision not to go the clown route because too many little kids, and adults, have a real phobia about clowns. Personally I love 'em... but I'm thinking of people who approach us and have to sit within a couple of feet from our faces. ) I recently had a company photo taken and you can see it on our Facebook page: Funny Face Designs by Lori. Hope this helps. )
Re: What to Wear????
Oh Lori, you ladies are too cute!! I love it. I have contemplated black shirts but am worried about the summer heat.
Re: What to Wear????
Black on Black in the Fall and winter. White logoed polo, black slacks and black apron on the spring/summer. I too want to blend into the background and let my artworks stand on it's own. When I first got started, I was always mistaken as one of the party guests when I stepped away from my station. Sometimes I paint a little something on my face..sometimes I don't , but the uniform stays the same unless the client asks me to wear colorful attire. I don't dress up in character because that isn't who I am and it would affect my artistic groove if I went to an event uncomfortably portraying a character that I don't embrace. I don't dress as a clown... I have any clown friends who I respect too much to even go there! There's an art to being a good clown and I just don't have that skillset.
Re: What to Wear????
Thanks! I went with black because when I first started my company I purchased white t-shirts and they looked horrible with black paint spatters that would not come out after just a few wearings... so we went to black so nothing shows! I purchased these shirts for the girls and so we have them in 3 different sleeve lengths (long, for the winter; 3/4 like in the photo; and cap sleeves)... so we wear the cap sleeve shirts in the summer. Granted they do tend to soak up the heat some... but we are generally located under a white tent... and we use the side curtains to control our exposure to the direct sun. We also use a zebra strip oil cloth to cover our tables with so when we in the public we really do look pretty professional and sharp... even if I do say so myself. Re: What to Wear????
I had a custom made rainbow apron and rainbow tutu made. I can just slap them on whatever I'm wearing and I'm insta-colourful and fun!

Re: What to Wear????
Hello,
In my first year I did not dress up, but decided that I felt more professional having some sort of uniform. I wear a long black apron, with a bright neon green or pink tee shirt under it. In my hair I put a neon flower to match my shirt. I also try to paint a small design on my face before the party.

Re: What to Wear????
These awesome ladies made it for me:
http://www.etsy.com/shop/CreativeChics
I showed them the picture and asked if they could replicate it (since the person who originally did that apron no longer had her store open). They did a wonderful job, and even put in two front pockets for me for my cellphone!

Yes their shop is still open so it's most likely they'll continue taking custom orders!
You can see some of it on my About section here: http://www.perfectlypaintedfaces.com/about/
I haven't really taken any full-length shots yet... I'll try to do that soon.
Re: What to Wear????
If you are looking for a quick costume, nurses scrub tops work really nice to spruce up your persona with very little effort. They generally have 2-4 pockets, are fairly inexpensive and come in lots of different colors, pretty designs, and even themes . Buy two that are alike. One your regular size and another in a very large size. Cut a big circle out of the back of the very large one, sew elastic around the edge to make an artist beret. Or cut a square to make a head scarf/bandana.
Re: What to Wear????
After reading all this... I have been thinking about this summer and what I will plan to wear... I have a TON of cute aprons... but I went out and bought some sewon/iron on letters, in a rock font, to spell ARTIST and some sew on gems, silver ones... I plan to sew the gems around the neckline and add my name to the back. (I think I will add some kind of marketing to the back of my directors chair too... but still thinking on that) I will wear my half aprons with this shirt/tank... I am thinking mostly for outdoor summer events. And I just ordered this fun apron off of Etsy:
I love the colors with out looking childish... if that is the right word to use...
