If you have a good colorful apron, black does work well. I usually go a little extra colorful, with a black waist apron for tips, phone, etc. Never jeans or shorts. Generally a skirt or nice slacks & a nice stretchy top or sweater. And my Sketcher shape-ups (dressy style) for my dear back on long stands on hard floors.

In the summer I wear a modest colorful sundress. Since it has been cold, I have been wearing jeans and a tiedye, until recently I did a gig at a very ... "well off" family's house, and the entire party was semi-formal, even the kids. I don't know if they always dress like that or what, but I got the feeling they did. I felt grossly underdressed, though in my follow up survey she rated my appearance as good. There are only two options on the survey, yes and no. Regardless, I am going this week to invest in a good fitting pair of black pants. Hard for me to find good fitting anything, I am shaped weird. Cest la vie, though, right?

We offer upscale services. All my staff wear black polos, most gigs are ok with jeans, in the summer black with khaki is ok.
Staff shirts have company name and new this year we are having the artist name on our shirts. For some events like festivals where we are regulars and there many days or clubs we can forgo company shirts - but still black i.e. I body paint in clubs in dress or skirts w/ black boots. A splash of color like a scarf or such is ok, but always professional looking.

Well, after I got married I got a little depressed cause here in Iowa, after you get married there is no other reason to dress up formally, so when I thought of this business this is the first thing I thought of!!! Perfect for me! So what if I'm in my 30's and I like to wear prom dresses and wear glitter!!! YAY!!! lol

That pirate costume is pretty awesome! Smile Although at gigs I usually keep it simple, wearing a black screen printed t-shirt, dark jeans and an apron, with my hair tied back.

I got a tshirt printed, it's white with my logo on the front, the butterfly part of my logo on the back with 'facepainter' written underneath. I wear that with jeans, an apron folded in half so it's just the bottom half with the pockets. And green fairy wings... With my face painted of course! I'll post a picture at some point... If I remember...

I recently bought a t-shirt that says "Face Painter" on the front and "Perfectly Painted Faces" on the back! I have yet to actually wear it... I need a gig to do that... AHEM. But it's a nice t-shirt. Smile I don't think I'd ever be comfortable enough to dress up like a princess or anything like that.

One rule of thumb to always keep in mind...from the time you exit your car do you look SPECIAL, do people ask "who's that?" IMO street clothes are not acceptable if you're going for the $$$. Our clients feel they are hiring us because we are talented special people bringing excitement to their event.
"Nice shirts" are what guests wear...there are many many options in all price ranges...YOU should look exceptional, not like the caterer, delivery person, or someone on a hotel staff. Small budgets can use their paint skills to paint a pair of bibs, a painters hat with drips of paint and a paint brush glued on it.
If you dress like a character then you should be maintaining that character in what you say and how you handle yourself, if you are a Princess the same goes...if you can't play a character, then don't dress like one.
There is the perfect way for each of us but it takes time, effort and often a few failures to find it.
LOOK at photos, find a way for someone to photo you when you work and you'll have a point to start from.
Personally, I'm tired of seeing "nice mom's" with their face paints saying they want it to be a business. If you were opening a store front shop it would take thousands of dollars, all kinds of regulations to learn about and meet, inspectors to deal with and the space to decorate. THINK LIKE A BIG BUSINESS if that is where you want to go.
Uniform shops have some incredible tops...if you don't look at the ones for the dentist office. There are vests that are long with two large pockets that let you go free with your creativity. Airbursh your company name on the back or have it embroidered, remember how many see your BACK at events. They come in all sizes (Up to 6X) so it is easy to have an extra to put on helpers. Bright tee shirt underneath in your company colors and you have an inexpensive look that fits everyone. If you're a girly personality trim with lace or change the buttons. The button industry is booming, handmade colorful buttons...as soon as you change the buttons on an outfit NO ONE else has one like yours.
Black tux shirts with the sleeves cut off can be made to look exceptional, the long tail can be cut off and sewed on the front bottom for pockets, name on the back, colorful tank underneath and NO one at the party will think you're a guest. DON'T FORGET the hats and shoes, most companies DO NO ALLOW flip fops in the work enviroment. You are not going to a family gathering YOU are the STAR people are anxiously awaiting the arrival of...give them their money's worth before you even pick up a paint brush. This I can promise you will assist in getting more gigs and better pay, this will give you an edge over the competition. I cannot tell you how many times just setting up people have remarked "OH, you are professional painters." sunny This isn't because we are the best it is because others are not putting their best foot forward, often simply not realizing it is important. I spoke on this topic at FABAIC a few years back and many have let me know what a difference it not only has made for business, but the difference in how it makes them feel...SPECIAL..for that is what we are. We spread joy, create smiling faces and tearful parents looking at the beauty of their child or their funny antics when painted. We are part of family memory books and on their face book...give'm what they deserve. sunny
