Realistic wounds without prosthetics?

I have been booked for tomorrow to paint a 5 year old as a dead barbie doctor. It took a while to get what they had in mind. I am enchanted with Lisa Joy Young's zombie doll however am having poor luck with trying to create realistic wounds with just paint. Does anyone have any good tutorials or advice? I will get to use the fake blood so that helps some but have always used scar wax or prosthetics before and I just find my paint "wounds" to be lacking. It just doesn't seem right.

I personally would not use prosthetics on a 5 year old..or the glue you have to use to keep them on...Liquid latex can be really brutle to the skin if you are wearing it for a while...and very hard to take off.....I would get one of those stipple sponges they make great scrapes...and use dark red paint...you can make the scars look some what real...and if you watch FABA TC Dutch's class has a great way to make staples...here is a picture i did using just paint[img][/img]

I can do bruises, cuts, burns etc. all with paint. You don't need anything special to make them look pretty real.

A little blood gel can be fun, but a good dripping Red Wolfe paint makes great blood.

I would also choose to paint on a child. However latex (I am gonna say it again after reading some threads here today - needs to be patch tested) is far less brutal than using homemade formulation not meant for the skin. And there is a trick to removing latex so it is not painful or hard to take off. And many FX glues are easy on young skin. One must know the vast array of products available for FX work before making a choice on what to use and on who to use them. I can thick of many safe and gentle FX products and glue I would put on a 5 yr old.

The best blood products for children are Kryolan Fresh Scratch and Kryolan Hydro Fix Blood - use with a stipple sponge. Easy to use, great effects, easy to clean off and dries to touch.

Painting real looking wounds takes a good deal of practice and research on what real would look like. Work at it, it takes time.

So the client was well pleased with the end result. I personally feel I could have done better had I had more practice time on it but they were happy and even gave me a $10 tip and some prosthetic scars, burns and wounds that the mother had for herself but never used. They did have to touch up before trick or treating since there was a 5 hour period to pass but I had demonstrated how to pull it off with the fake blood. I am waiting for the pics from them but they are looking forward to booking me again next year.

Shannon need I say more than you are always an inspiration? Alas I was only working with Snaz but have got a small wolf mini palette now to start playing and experimenting with. You are living my dream. I took 3 years of drama in high school (even going for just that 1 class after having my daughter and going into the alternative program instead of the regular school,) just because I loves the makeup and effects. They even voted me most likely to do stage makeup (probably because I went to school every day with a full face. lol). Alas I never did anything with it as I got caught up in being a mom.

The little girl has a little brother. I did his pirate face for fun for them since he had been really good watching me do his sister and he did so well that I will be doing them both next year. I was only booked for her but had 10 minutes left in the time slot so I figured why not? They paid for both the faces and the tip. They are also raving about me to friends and are still hitting me up for cards to give out to their friends. lol
