First World Problems, but still whaaaaaa!
For financial and being self-employed reasons, we manage about a weeks holiday every two years, as a family. Our last trip was to Fiji, to my parent's timeshare. It was lovely, really really lovely, except the morning we landed, my daughter came down with chicken pox. It was awful for her and lasted until well after we returned home.
Fast forward to last year, when my folks once again generously offered us their timeshare for August 2012... for two weeks! I leaped on the offer and I've been wishing I hadn't ever since. In the two weeks we are away, my husband is missing two gigs and has to return for work after one week, my daughter is missing a school ski trip and a school ballet trip, I have had several requests for painting I've had to turn down, I'm missing a Con I usually work/attend... and now my son has bronchitis, I have a stinking awful cold, and my daughter is coming down with it three days before we leave. Flying with sinus and lung issues is going to be a nightmare.
With all the terrible things happening to people lately I feel kind of stupid complaining about my overseas holiday, but I'm starting to feel very picked on.

Hope everyone gets well soon. I'm afraid to ask but if brought up again will you take the timeshare next year. Maybe a shorter family trip else where would change things. Try to enjoy your time there.

Artsy, no, I wouldn't. It's a beautiful place, but assuming that we manage to get overseas again, I think I'd book a package deal much closer to the time of travel. The timeshares have to be booked 8-9 months out. It seems that lots can come up in that length of time.
Angela, funny you should say that. Now that I can see it all written down, I feel less frustrated about it. There'll be other gigs, other painting jobs, other conventions, other school trips. If we can just get healthy! Daughter getting sick again right before the holiday was kind of the last straw, but cross fingers she heals up quick. Musket Cove is a stunningly lovely resort and I feel privileged to have the chance to go back there.
Squeezing lemons for lemonade... or lemon meringue pie...
Thank you for letting me vent, everyone.

it does suck...but these things happen. We have also had a holiday where I had to bring my husband to emergency with his (second!) appendicitis. They operated on him in Pisa, next to the leaning tower. he was in hospital the whole stay ( 3 weeks) and I was on my own with the 4 kids, commuting back and forth to the hospital.
In hindsight, the kids looked back on it as a very nice holiday, so it wasn't all that bad.

I'm glad you vented!!
When I wrote down I hadn't post my own sorrow about having breastcancer, because of Brian Wolfe and little brave heart (freedspirits Son) I was immediately told: EVERYBODY matters!!!
So do you, and your struggles!
Everybody needs a familybreak now and then and it's very frustrating when those times are ruined by sickness or bad luck.
Hope everything turns out to be okay! X

Thank you Lizzie. The people on this forum are wonderful, all of you! I know I don't know you all very well yet, but this is a lovely, generous spirited place and I feel very happy to have found it.
Does anyone have recommendations for clearing up sinuses/ears so you don't feel like your ear drums are going to explode during landing? I have nasal spray and menthol lollies but that's all I can think of. I'm actually quite worried about my daughter now, she's horribly gunked up.

My daugther is 3 and suffer fron allergies all the time I have an aspirator from graco that runs on batteries it has a really strong suction. That's one second I have her kid friendly nasal spray , the sleep right tapes for the nose that is not medication it only lifts up your noustrils to allow air flow, little noses has a saline spray it allow the accumulation of mucus that has formed to drain, and now actual medication well I always just go to the pharmacist and ask what they reccomend. Hope this helps.

That helps a lot, thanks! I went and got the sleep tapes and a saline spray, and while I was there I found a herbal "degunker" called "De Stuff it", for kids and I thought what the heck, I'll try anything at this point. (I did check with the pharmacist that it would be ok on top of the cold meds she's taking), I think we're about as prepared as we can be!

Sinutab really helps (active ingredient is pseudo -ephedrine) and in my country it is over the counter.
