Silly Farm's Color Rub (for hair)

Laurie, you are a hoot! If I am ever in McCall, I am definitely gonna come to your restaurant (unless it's vegan and only serves GRAAAINS) Shannon, I cannot get rid of that silly joke...darn you!

My thoughts on the Hair Flairs Color Rubs:

They were super easy to do.

I bought a cape for $4 from the beauty supply store and a box of gloves to protect my hands for $6 and a can of White Rain hairspray for .97

The colors were beautiful, but the shipment didn't arrive until 1:00pm on Friday so I had no time to test it on ANYONE before the event started. I printed up my disclaimer and recommendations and posted that on my information board inside my tent... but I still verbally explained what I knew about the product to each customer.

My first lesson I learned was that you only need to take a very small bunch of hair. I thought I was, but I learned each time that what seemed like a small bunch was always still too much. I just held the hair and rubbed the container down along the hair shaft until I got good coverage. I learned not to press too hard and not give it too much color or you are just wasting the product. Then I immediately wiped my hands on a baby wipe before grabbing the hairspray can.... gave the hair a decent spray and that was it. Easiest thing in the world.

I also learned that I could charge more than I did ($5 per application for one color)

I'm not touching hair.... this past Saturday I was about to put one of my long duck clips into a girls hair when the hordes of wildlife caught my eye... Nope, not setting myself up to touch hair.

How would you turn away someone with filthy or inhabited hair????? I don't even want to go there.

ewwwww.... well, the gloves protected me, but not the Color Rubs themselves!

I forgot to mention that I bought a bottle of rubbing alcohol and a spray bottle for the Rubs because the Hair Flairs website says you can spritz the cake with the alcohol and then swipe it with a cotton ball if you want to clean it between customers.

i wonder if you could use a sponge on the color rub the put it on the hair...one sponge per color per person..the hair would not touch the color rub..just a thought ..the lice thing would bother me too..im itching already

Lice? I suppose adults have lice, too... but you only hear about children getting it. I didn't offer it to children. I only did this on adult women and my son's girlfriend.

Yes, adults get lice as well. We see it in surgery occasionally. Everybody gets that itchy feeling until you can get a shower. I'm with Shannon--have no desire to mess with hair.

If you are doing this to someone other than yourself, I would think you would violate cosmetology laws in some areas. As it is "Face Paiting" slides under the radar of most states BUT if they wanted to pick nits we are applying cosmetics to humans.

I am thoughtfully pondering these points being brought up.

I would like to tell you guys that I applied two colors to my son's girlfriend's hair on Sunday at the BalloonFest. She has beautiful long straight black hair. I think I used magenta & teal on her and my former booth partner put some dark magenta tinsel in-between the two little sections I colored. It was subtle, yet very pretty.

Now, we packed up the whole tent and set-up that night and there was barely enough room in the backseat for the two of them to sit so she was practically sitting in his lap (I don't think they minded one bit ) We stopped for dinner at a restaurant and then went home. She told me that by the time she got home, the color was gone. So, we checked my son's shirt and the seat of the car to see if the color transferred. There was absolutely no evidence of it anywhere.

It is quite messy to apply so you need gloves and a cape for sure... but it seems to be so temporary that I don't know how it could be such a big deal.... hair feathers and tinsel last a heck of a lot longer.

And I verbally spoke with the customers about it before applying it, as well as pointed out my disclaimer posted on the foam board behind me. The girls that want this are teenagers. They want to look fun & funky for a day or two. I guess you could think of it as a face paint for the hair.

And, as far as cooties go (hehehe)... the teenagers that wanted it were very much into their looks and hygiene... I'm sure I can discreetly turn someone away who would appear to have lice or cooties or binga-bugs and do it in a way that would not cause them embarassment.

What is the longest that you have seen it last?
Because I too am seeing that it is only lasting a few hours and therefore might not be worth it.

I have only used it for this past weekend's event. I didn't get to put it on a whole lot of people... one lady was a with a family who had seen me at the Oz event the previous weekend. I told her that she would be the first person i had used it on... she was a super fun and nice lady and she went for it. I gave her my card and asked her to let me know how it was for her... she might have lost the card.....

The Color Rubs website lays out what to expect. Apparently, it will last longer if you leave a leave-in conditioner on before applying...something you can't do at a festival... I told the people that. I also told them that if they apply their hair dryer to it it will help it to last longer... again, not something they can do at a festival.

But I only charged $5.00 for a little handful of hair to be colored. It's not a waste of money for those who want to walk around all day with it. It's no different that a face paint as far as longevity expectation is concerned. It lasted more than a few hours on my son's girlfriend... but really got rubbed off from her having her head on my son's shoulder and against his shirt in the backseat on the ride home.

yes, i avoid stating that things will last, whether its face paint, hair color, glitter tattoos. I just make it fun for the day and if it lasts longer for them, then it's a bonus.

Couldn't you apply a little leave in conditioner? I don't see a problem with that.

You can put leave-in conditioner on before you apply it... but that means at home BEFORE you go to wherever you have it done.

I think she was saying can't you (the person selling it) put a little leave-in conditioner in before you rub it on like Heather did in the video? I don't think the leave in conditioner needs to be dry or applied right after washing your hair.

Guys, all the dance troops that stay at the Hotel where I perform go down to the beach and use Koolaid to put color streaks in their hair. My daughter used it on my grandson Halloween and it worked fine.
However, I'm not crossing that line on gigs and after a while a booth starts to look like a storefront and our experience has been people pay more for you when they see you as an artist/performer/entertainer than as a vendor.
Now that's in our area, venues are certainly different.
Decisions are hard when we are all simply attempting to make a good living.
