Hunger Games...
Midnight premiere last night - I used Lisa Joy Young's tutorial that she posted yesterday and made a quick mockingjay stencil. I didn't realize I'd have a line up of kids for flames and mockingjays....
I also just did a bunch of yellow/orange starblends faces w/mockingjays on one cheek and #12 on the forehead...
It's messy and not quite finished but it's the only pic I got!

Re: Hunger Games...
I came up with a simple one that I knew I could free hand, since I suspect I will get lots of requests tonight at the school dance for something related to the hunger games.
I used one of those round sponge on a stick things to make the circle. The head was done like LJY does her flower petals, then a line starting just behind the head and coming down to make the "jay" ridge and the long beak. A jelly bean shape for the body with 2 lines making an upside down V and an upside down U connecting for the tail. Then tear drops for the main part of the wing and little flicks from that to fill in some feathering.

Re: Hunger Games...
Ok, here comes the Spanish ignorance: what are hunger games and what's a mockingjay?

Re: Hunger Games...
That looks great - I just cut my stencil out of regular typing paper and it was dying quickly. I was actually painting for *Bingo Night* and didn't realize how many of the kids were going straight from there to the midnight show. (the movie was ROCKING AWESOME!)
Anyway - my last several were a hot mess which I fixed manually. I'm going to stare at yours for awhile and figure it out. It looks awesome.

Re: Hunger Games...
The Hunger Games is the current Young Adult book obsession - it's a series of three books about a dystopian future in the US.
The US is split in to 12 (13, counting the Capitol) different districts and, as a form of punishment for an earlier insurrection, each year they have one female and one male (chosen by lottery, aged 12-18) from each District fight to the death in a televised Survivor-like reality show.
The movie just premiered last night. The mockingjay is the symbol of District 12 - the district which the heroine comes from.
Phew! Run on sentences and convoluted explanation.

Re: Hunger Games...
My daughter had a friend buy her book one and I started reading it. I got 2 and 3 on my e-reader and am halfway through book 3. It is awesome Sadly, my daughter isn't much interested. I think it is a bit too scary for her. Never mind that she reads Percy Jackson and Harry Potter. I think the difference is that the adults let this go on for 75 years, where in Percy and Harry books, most of the adults are still trying to protect the kids.
But despite the endangering kids thing, it is really a good book. I like how it presents how a teen girl, who isn't out to change the world, makes such a huge difference. All she is doing is trying to protect those she loves and still do what is right, and she changes the world.

OMG I'm so putting a mocking jay design on my brother's arm tonight when we go to see the HUNGER GAMES. I gotta figure where I'm gonna put mine. I'll make sure to walk with business cards.

Yeah, keep business cards on you at all times. I painted hubby as a green man for a convention and we went out to dinner that evening. The manager was gushing over the paint job and I was kicking myself for not having my business cards on me.
Re: Hunger Games...
Awesome. I always have them in my wallet. I've gotta figure out what I'm gonna wear. ahhhh!

Re: Hunger Games...
I practiced for awhile today until I had the mockingjay symbol down freehand. I didn't want to try to make a stencil out of paper and do the whole powder thing.
I'm going to wear the design to the theater on Sunday when we go to the matinee.
And I'll make sure to have cards!

Re: Hunger Games...
For my free hand version, I went and bought one of those sponges on a stick things just for this. Trying to get the circle right was the hardest part for me and that solved it. And I used a #2 round. I wish I was able to find a larger sponge thingy, because it would be nice to do a larger one on boys' shoulders.

Use a whole tack sponge or cut a sponge circle the size you want from a car wash sponge. Get creative and glue it to something for a way to handle it. Don't know what size you have in mind but a tack sponge could easily be glued to a lid from a paint container. You'd have even pressure that way.

Re: Hunger Games...
Great idea martha - you are really clever!
Really good job on the hunger games designs everyone- I watched LJY last nite but haven't tried it yet.
I liked the hunger games books. I'll have to check when the movie is showing here as we are always behind! I always seem to enjoy the books more than the movie! Good opportunity to show off LJY design but I don't have business cards! ( I'm still a newbie)

Re: Hunger Games...
Wish I would have seen this thread before I went to see the movie this evening
Oh well. The movie was great, and I can just paint myself when I go see it again next week. Great designs, by the way.

Re: Hunger Games...
Saw the movie at the midnight premiere and loved it, so wish I could have had my face painted like that!!
Re: Hunger Games...
My daughter went to see it last night with her best friend and loved it. I am taking her again next weekend, so I can see it also.
This is how she went last night. Had to make it a quick eye design, had about five minutes before we had to leave.
She also designed her t shirt, we couldn't find one locally. She drew it out on paper, then penciled it in on the tshirt and I helped her paint it on. The back has a stick figure Katniss shooting an arrow with flames behind her. It turned out really cute, and totally my daughter's thing.
