I Went to the Circus Like This:-)
I was given some tickets by one of my awesome clients to Ringling Brother's Circus & their theme this year is dragons. So my son & I went like this:
This is the 4th time he's ever let me paint him, but he loves dragons! He loved all the attention.
We were constantly asked where the face painting was & one of the clowns asked (with a surprised expression), "Did our face painters do that?!" Their face painters were making a hot mess off old snazaroo style designs... heeeheee! I handed out a lot of business cards

Totally love it!
My son has sensory integration disorder. So I use painting as part of his O.T. and try to paint him as much as possible, especially when we go places. LOL My 10yr "drama queen" well that's another story.

Re: I Went to the Circus Like This:-)
That's the way to go! I'm sad though that the "Greatest Show On Earth" has not so good painters.
Re: I Went to the Circus Like This:-)
Love it! Yes, that is sad that the greatest show on earth does not have the greatest painters...you would think that they would have figured out how to hire better people by now. Why cheep out on faces?
Re: I Went to the Circus Like This:-)
I wondered the same thing. When the clown spoke w/ me I asked if they were hired from our area or traveled w/ them. It seems their face painters travel w/ them... I wonder what they pay? I also wondered if it was friends family of the entertainers in the circus & if they wanted to keep the face paint level low so it stayed the same show to show & face painter to face painter. It does baffle me.... Now the clown make-up on all the clowns was beautiful & the powder base on each one was as smooth as a babies bottom. I'm in awe at how soft they faces looked. Now, that I'd like to learn!
Re: I Went to the Circus Like This:-)
We have a former Ringling Brothers clown teaches that at clown jam here in Branson,MO.

Love your mask and the "eye" in your son's mask. Can I borrow?

If I post it, it's borrowable (meaning you can paint it on yourself... LOL). Only saying that since someone is right now "Borrowing" my pics on their website....
Re: I Went to the Circus Like This:-)
I know and it was not just one of your designs but a design on your own face! How low can someone go?

Re: I Went to the Circus Like This:-)
I remember years ago when I started out I had picture from other painters but that was when I could look at a picture and paint in exactly. Now I look at others work and think how can I tweak it to make it my own. Of coarse I was taking before google and facebook and hardly anyone had a website and everyone looked at the snazaroo contests for inspiration.
Re: I Went to the Circus Like This:-)
Hillbilly, I remember those days also. I had a 3 ring binder w/ Snaz photos that was given to me by the clown that hired me. I asked her if it was ok to use them (being an artist & knowing all about stealing others work). She lied to me & said that's what they were on the Snaz site for. The 1st thing I did when I branched out on my own was toss the book. It just never felt right using it.
Re: I Went to the Circus Like This:-)
I have all kinds of books that I've bought for technique and inspiration but I've never had time to look at any of them while I paint. Always been too swamped. I'm pretty lucky to still have a halfway decent memory (at my age) and if I see something I can usually get a halfway decent rendition. Current avatar was a first time painting of that design but there are so many versions out there it isn't hard to picture it.
Always feel it's the "polite" thing to at least ask permission to use someone's work as inspiration.
I just don't get why someone wouldn't take the time to put their own work out there unless they are ashamed or just flat out lazy and dishonest.

Re: I Went to the Circus Like This:-)
That was when I was painting at the theme park and they wouldn't let us use a camera the first few years because of theming. When we changed Supervisors the new one let us do what we wanted as far as art goes.
