Flying on Plane with kit Empty Flying on Plane with kit

Post by granola Sun Mar 03, 2013 8:58 pm

Going home to California for vacation and planning on doing some face painting on the family while I am there. Has anyone been hassled about bringing their kit as a carry on? Has TSA confiscated any of your paints/brushes? They better not give me a hard time, I'd rather miss my flight than watch them throw any of my stuff in the trash.

Yes, I have taken a small kit with me on a plane:

First of all...
the word "paint" is on the no-fly list.
Call it face make up.

Don't bring your brushes in your carry on. Pack them in your luggage.

Bring less than you need for paint. You do not need massive quantities of paint....just a small amount of some. You only need one color of glitter (and put it into a ziploc bag in your luggage, so you do not look like a unicorn farted all over your clothing, unless you like that look.)

Or, if you are in the Bay area...
the Kryolan factory is in San Francisco.
I heard that the Interferenz colors were going up in price. I would pick some up from the factory if you are in the 'hood.

Bring your "face make up" with you..
glitter and brushes in the luggage.
And, you need less than you think.

xoxo

I flew with a pretty hardy kit, no problems, they take a good look as it gets xrayed. Have your business cards handy- and make sure there is no liquid in your kit (fixing spray, etc) I took my glitter gels and put them through separate. I broke down waiting for a flight- and asked a family if I could paint their kid. She was that cute.
Have fun with your family!

Unicorn farted Laughing,( had visual in my mind) cheers Thanks for the laugh *wipes away tear* ahhh... I needed that! Well, back to biz. thank you for the helpful advise fesspenter. Since I am a beginner, I feel as though I need my whole kit but I will refrain from doing so. I will pick out colors needed for a few faces, which is good, less things to bring. Your lucky fairyfox, I know with my luck TSA would take me to the back and give me the 3rd degree. That is soo cute that you painted a kid while waiting for a flight. I bet the parents and the little girl were super thrilled! That is awesome! Like a Star @ heaven A New Face, I am going to the glitter poo thread now! Thanks Smile

Oh, no unfortunately I wont be in the Bay area, more like Long Beach area. Southern California. miss the weather and family and beaches, can't wait to visit. But I gotta tell ya, Texas has sure grown on me.

Since mine is technically a gun case, it gets special treatment--I have to pick it up in the baggage office! No muss no fuss--just extra care of my precious colors! (Free!)

Post by Valerie A Mon Mar 04, 2013 4:16 pm

I started reading exactly what was written on my 'paints.'
Paradise, definitely says make up.
DFX either says nothing (splits) or refers casually to make up.
Tag 'Face and Body Art'
Wolfe 'Face Art and Fx'....and I did note this comment on the back: Do not mix with other brands.... Interesting.
Snaz: first it says, "Face and Body PAINT" (caps mine) under that it says "Face and Body Makeup"...so I wonder if someone had a lot of Snaz and got a prickly TSA agent, would they would have a hissy-fit??

Have a nice trip home, Granola!

Granola,
a painter on Fb I think it was Dutch Bihary, posted last week about flying with his kit, he said he always checks his kit. Still comp[lained that the TSA seems to rummage thru everything, but it may be easier to check it.

I moved from Germany to Florida in January, I checked my kit and back paint (2 bags of 50 pounds each) full of my face painting supplies, I was worried about my glue getting frozen but they said no frozen temperature inside the plane, the risk is when they are filling the plane with the luggage, on the other hand if you travel on summer time you got to be careful, some brands can melt under high temperatures and split cakes will mix together.

Last time I flew to a convention, I took my whole rolling kit, it is a plano tool box. Put the metal bar that comes with it in, and it fit right into one of their bins, just under the size it needed to be. I dont think they opened it, but if they did, they left everything where it belonged. It went well!

Have fun!

Anniel, I have been wanting to ask you, what brand/model of rifle case do you have. I've been looking at them on Amazon and they range from about $30 to several hundred. What, specifically, should I look for in a rifle cas?

I think it depends on your back, and how much you want to carry. I would definitely get one with wheels. I would rather have everything where I don't have to grab this, that and the other as I run out the door, but just have it self-contained. (I am one of those do it on the fly type people, but can organize it ahead of time). I personally prefer the 2-rifle size.

I am finally settled into a Pelican brand with wheels. It was not in the budget but on my dream list. My first was a second-hand find & got stepped on by my son's hefty friend, so I bought the next best up at BassPro w/a "Gear Guard" guarantee. Each time I wore it out(broke a wheel/latch/hinge) exchanged for the next sturdiest up (which probably made me pay $30 out of pocket each time). Now I have my dream case--lifetime guarantee, moisture lock (nothing spills out or in) and it is STURDY!! I put Butterfly Duck tape on it to make it less intimidating before I've opened it. It gets an occasional reaction from those who don't know what's inside, but who know guns which always makes us both giggle afterwards. ("I take my painting seriously...hehe") Does get security on-board quickly at events I have to clear in with them...much better than before!

Hope that helps.
