I have two practicce heads, One from Wimex and the other one is from a beauty school. I apply hair spray on them ,before painting. When I'm done , I wash them off with warm water and dish soap and the paint comes right off without leaving stains. I use all kinds of paints on them. Snaz, wolfe, DFX, Kryolan. I do the same thing for my pads (also got them at wimex)alien

Not sure why everyone is freaking out over staining? Am I missing something, because mine is stained all to heck, but it doesn't stop me from practicing on it.. the paint that I put down covers up all of the stains.. so I'm not seeing where the stains really play that big of a part in the process... Maybe that's just me?

I try to get the stains out, because sometimes I don't have any "victims" and ended taking a pic of my new design and put it on my board or web site, and bring it down whenever I found a "Victim".

Just a thought newbies to FP may be painting their designs on the practice head & taking a photo of this to put on their photo display board for kids to choose their designs from. So if this is the case they wouldn't want them looking all stained etc.

I spray my practice head with hairspray every time before I paint on it & the paint always washes off under warm water & a rub with a cloth. I paint with Diamond Fx, Wolfe, Snaz, TAG.

The practice head doesn't even come close to the real deal a kids face. But hey it's only for practice practice practice. flower

I suggest that you can practice small designs on your thigh or the inner part of your arm so you can feel like you are painting on real skin, practice heads from beauty school can be more stiffer, paints might glide as well as brushes. So they can be hard to work on.
But this is only my 2cnts.. you can work with what is best for you! Very Happy

so what are the other options then for workign full faces adn getting the symmertry etc, i just can't see how you woudl get that practice short of a real face or a practice head. so going back ot the initial questoin are some practice heads better than others. do you get anythign different when you purchase something liek the pricey $50 ones from SF?

anyone, anyone?

WIMEX practice heads are the same that SF have, wimex have then for cheaper $16. Google those bratz doll make up heads. ( Girls toys)theyare like the huge barbie ones.

I love Wimex, they have great stuff, and they have a 'mask' that you can use on your practice head, and it's only $5.00.

As for the heads that Silly Farm carries, those are made by Leon McBride, and are touted as not staining because Leon uses a special composition when dipping the heads. I have heard great things about them.

As for me, I use beauty school drop outs (real cheap, many times free) and I have a couple of Wimex heads, which I love using the masks with.

As for cleaning heads, the best I've seen is the use of the Magic Eraser in combination with 99% alcohol.

Hope that helps answer your questions.

Practice Heads - Page 2 Empty Re: Practice Heads

Post by Fabtastic Thu Aug 19, 2010 11:04 pm

I tried the hairspray tonight on my practice pad - worked like a charm! I bought a small sample bottle of hairspray (Tresemme I think), it should last me a long time.

So after experimenting on my practice pad, I felt comfortable (finally) to try painting on my practice head and it worked just fine!

My practice head is actually my daughter's, from the cosmetology class she took. So I didn't want to mess it up with stains.

Another place to get heads: find a beauty school/hairdressers school and ask what they do with them after the students are done with them. My daughter took a high school cosmetology course, and I think she had to pay $20 or so for it. She told me that the teacher had a closet full of heads (LOL) that students had left behind. It's not a proper facepainting head, but I didn't pay for it so I'm not complaining. The face is a bit small ... just like a child! It's working nicely for me.

Post by Teri Thu Aug 19, 2010 11:12 pm

i just bit the bullet and ordered a practice head from wimex and extra slip on cover and a practice pad well actually a couple and it all only came to $35 with shipping. i figured the extra head and pad woudl give me more to practice with before i had to wash it and start again. it may not be as good as the real thing. but i figured it will give me a chance to practice a design, get better at it and then be able to do it quickly or marginally faster on my kids.

Hazel,
have you tried the pads from Wimex? They have one for eyes, and one for lips. oh, and the flat one that they call the tribal practice pad. each of the pads (eye and lip) have several different shapes of eyes and lips.
If you haven't tried them you just have to, they are so inspiring and fun.

I've looked at the eye and lip ones... tempting! I do have a flat one, very good for practicing strokes on. I'm not sure if Wimex ships to Canada though. Right now I'm just happy to finally use my head. (...that sounds weird!)
