Review: Kryolan metallics and 'inferenze' colors
I got a palette of Kryolan colors, all metallic and inferenze.
The metallic colors are amazing. Excellent coverage, deep colors. Very full, rich, and dimensional. I wish I had more of those. I do not have a silver, just the bronze, copper, gold. I'll get the silver soon.
The inferenze are also very pretty but NOT particularly opaque. You might have to do a layer, let it dry, and then layer again to get opacity.
I haven't tried much linework with these but I don't get he sense that they would be excellent for it... because they blend better than paradise stuff does. I'm talking seamless, perfect gradations between colors where you cannot tell where one stops and the other begins.
I got some of this stuff for metal robot type work and the metallics I have are just great.
I get the sense that the infereze would blend well with other colors and be solid over some sort of base, or mixed with some other color to give some subtle shimmer and depth.
In all cases the colors are rich and full and gorgeous.

You can see the bronze (it might have been copper) and then inferenze blue, red, and purple. You can see that they aren't quite as opaque... especially the purple. The blue and red blend together to create a different (similar) purple shade with a heavier coverage.

Re: Review: Kryolan metallics and 'inferenze' colors
Ooh, they're pretty! I love the look of the blue!
Re: Review: Kryolan metallics and 'inferenze' colors
Yes, the blue was the strongest of the inferenze colors I've tested so far. I've still got a green and such to go.
The inferenze.. PB? on the back is ULTRA soft. Like play dough. And super super thin.... not really sure what it is supposed to look like. Kind of a clear blueish translucent sheen. I think it is mainly meant to go over other colors?

Re: Review: Kryolan metallics and 'inferenze' colors
OK, so I did more tests. I tried putting the PB/opal white over blue. It worked but... well, as you can see in the pic the dark blue becomes light blue. It does gain a 'sheen' though, semi-metallic.
The PB by itself is next to the dark blue. This flecky white color-ish thing. Horrible coverage, you can still see skin tones and such if you look. Not super metallic.
The Nacre though is super translucent and actually adds a more metallic look without nearly the color shift. Moreover, the color is more 'true' as in a navy blue still looks navy despite being a lighter color value, whereas the opal REALLY shifted the color. The Nacre can also just add a shimmer effect to normal skin tones by itself wheras the PB/Opal has this icky-white ness to it. Also, as mentioned before, the Opal is this super mushy consistency, it is very hard to load a brush.
In the pic, starting at the elbow, it is the Nacre, the opal/PB, dark blue, opal mixed with dark blue, and then various other Kryolan inferenze colors (dark metallic blue, green, etc.

Re: Review: Kryolan metallics and 'inferenze' colors
Here we have the copper metallic vs the copper Inferenze. The inferenze is brighter, more 'orange' or new penny color and the metallic is more brown/ old penny color.
Both are about the same level of 'metallic'/shiny. Depending on the light angle they are either defined or really easy to blend. I think this can have some cool revealed effects.
On the whole so far I'm very impressed with the Kryolan metallics. I haven't used wolfe yet but these are very nice and blend super well. (like airbrush well).
You will note that once again, inferenze has a less heavy coverage than the metallic. Granted, it might be possible to load the brush better and get a perfect coat first shot... but the metallic kryolans do this effortlessly.

Re: Review: Kryolan metallics and 'inferenze' colors
Finally, I should point out that once the paint dries (and it dries pretty fast) it is very stable. I gave it a hard smudge/rub (hard enough to make my skin hurt) and while the paint moved a little and some edges got a little blurred, for the most part the paint stayed very crisp. This is true for all the paints.

Re: Review: Kryolan metallics and 'inferenze' colors
I have a few interferenz and I need to work with them more. I love my regular Kryolan colors, but the interferenz is almost grease paint to me. They are ok in butterflies for an accent color, but black Wolfe line work doesn't look as nice over it.
I will say I used the gold for a full face (The Star) in a christmas play and it looked gorgeous and stayed all day. The glitter also stuck to it better.

Re: Review: Kryolan metallics and 'inferenze' colors
I have some DFX black coming, I'll test ways of getting sharp lines over it.
I think the absolute key will be letting it dry. Once it was dry the Kryolan seemed ultra stable.

Re: Review: Kryolan metallics and 'inferenze' colors
I have that lovely blue interferenze but the coverage is definitely sheer. I haven't bought another interferenze since. It does go great under or over colors as an accent but that's where it stops for me.
The metallics have a sort of lack lustre to them. <-- I think that's what I'm trying to say.
For instance, the gold is more "golden" but not GOLD like Goldfinger, IMHO. I will probably never buy Kryolan metallics again either, especially not after getting a taste of the Mehron metallic powders. I plan on giving Wolfe a try too.

Re: Review: Kryolan metallics and 'inferenze' colors
Thanks for this thread. I was considering an Interferenze pallette but now think I will hold off for a while. Seems like I can get much the same sheer effect with pressed powders much cheaper. I do hear though that Interferenze bronze is luscious so that may have to be a "single" purchase.

Re: Review: Kryolan metallics and 'inferenze' colors
The exception would be the silver. It is a really nice metalic white...it is not silver. I like it. Mozart pink and Strauss wine are nice for little girls lip stick. I actually think that the ben nye powders have more opacity than the interferneze metatlics.

how do you use powders?

Re: Review: Kryolan metallics and 'inferenze' colors
I use them for bases for quick eye designs, butterflies, or to put quick line work on top of, like swirls and curls, much like I would to lay down a mask color (like my avitar) could have used powder, but I used tag pearl blue and tag pearl white, could also have used the Kryolan metalix blue with the Kryolan silver (which is white) it would have more sparkle and been more sheer, and look different, but still nice. It is kind of like when you want chips...do you want rippled, flavored, or not? All are nice...
The powders go on quickly and have good staying power in hot, humid climates. I use them on children who may not like the feel of wet paint on thier eyes too, like I use star blends on boys for spider man eyes, it just helps to swish something dry on some kids.

Re: Review: Kryolan metallics and 'inferenze' colors
The interferenz colors...still my favorites to the point of stupidity since I can't bring myself to use my pretties on normal human children (I'm waiting for the first ailien invasion...I'll use them on our 'guests"). They are somewhat sheer colors that do much better when applied with a sponge (Shannon would be the best person to tell how to use them since she does so beautifully). Interferenze colors aren't meant to be used for linework (though I've used the copper and gold for linework...for some reason...they work great). If you want opacity in your metallics Interferenz is definitley not the way to go unless you have the time to build up the layers...but if you do have the time...the duo chrome look is stunning!
Re: Review: Kryolan metallics and 'inferenze' colors
I'll have to try the wolfe metallics.
I see the kryolans as more a blending set. They blend together so easily and seamlessly it is really amazing. I don't have wolfe to compare to but the colors I have (outside the PB/opal) all have a great depth to the color.

Re: Review: Kryolan metallics and 'inferenze' colors
I use a lolipop applicators (like a smoothie blender) to put on the powders. They are like huge eye shadow applicators. Amerikan Body Art carries them, they are sturdy little buggers for like .60 each and they last and last. Powders are also nice on top of paint for a really intesnse look or to set it or give it shimmer, many effects.
Re: Review: Kryolan metallics and 'inferenze' colors
Today I was in my local art shop where they only stock Kryolan. They had the normal aquacolours but I was after the interferenz ones. They had one colour, a light pink (03 G), which I ended up getting, plus the metallic copper.
The interferenz pink works like a charm, it's creamy and sponges very well, but the copper... it feels as if the paint has all dried out, the water floats on top when I try and get it on the brush, and hardly any pigments come off the surface of the paint. I tried it with a sponge, but the sponge looked brown and smushed browny coppery mush on my arm.
How can I get the metallic paint to work? I have a silver and gold pot in my palette, and they're usually hard to work with.
Maybe the size matters as the interferenz pink is in a slightly larger pot as the copper (with is the very small palette size)...

Re: Review: Kryolan metallics and 'inferenze' colors
I have Kryolan silver and gold (not copper) and have found that I need to really work extra water into the paint to get it to work nicely.

Re: Review: Kryolan metallics and 'inferenze' colors
Dear Ospreyfalcon:
There is Copper, and then,
There is Interferenz Copper.
If the price makes you gasp,
then you just bought the Interferenz.
I mixed copper powder on top of the Copper to create a shinier metallic colour, before I received my Interferenz Copper.
xoxo

Love it! You're so right!
Re: Review: Kryolan metallics and 'inferenze' colors
Aww I need to try that one. They only had this Interferenz pink and I'm already in love with it. Maybe in a next order. My country is hopeless for facepainting materials. Thank you for the advice. I'll give those metallics a bath and see what happens (not literally!).
