Tiger Assistance

I was facepainting at an event alongside a newbie and a local seasoned pro.

Everyone had a tiger on their board.

The pro's looked awesome.

My.tiger.looked.awful.

(Although I could tell the difference between mine and the novice, my tiger needed plastic surgery.)

Anyone got a good step by step? At this point, I think I need to SEE someone show me what I'm not getting from a final picture...

Becstar has a great tiger tutorial on youtube. I used it to improve my 1st tigers.

Also, there are some great threads on tigers under How'd You Do That?

If you can post a pic of your tiger it would help to see what you might need to improve.

Mark Reid also has a book on cats..His Video on FABA TV helped me out so much

Would love to see a picture of your tiger. I think the one thing that sets a good tiger apart from an average tiger is the linework in the stripes. Use a large brush.. like a number 7 to create stripes that start very thin... to thick ...to thin. I'm sure you are laying on a nice, blended base.

Here's a simple 3 minute tiger that I do. (although.. she wanted it to be "saber-toothed", so the teeth are a little long for my taste). The flash doesn't allow you to see the yellow in the center very well, but you get the idea. She wouldn't let me use glitter. SIGH. I HATE that!! Nothing fancy, but clean.

It might be useful to also google search for pictures of REAL tigers. You can see what the real stripes look like, what the muzzle looks like, where the white patches over the eyes go. Your design doesn't obviously have to be super realistic, but I'm sure it can't hurt to look at the source of the tiger face!

Tigers are all about brushwork IMO. Mark's book is great for seeing that.

If I want to make tigers look realistic I never look at other people's work, I always go to photographs of real tigers,.

From watching numerous tutorials and analysing even more tiger faces, I think there are a couple of things that make a good tiger: Clean, varied line work is essential (thin/thick/thin)... and making sure your endpoints go towards a central focal point.

Katrina, I like your nice clean tiger. Too often I try to wiggle the stripes too much and it ends up looking sloppy.

Wow. Becstars' linework is beautiful! It's kinda fun that she does a tiger/cheetah mix. Fun design.

Shannon, I love your tigers. I might have to go back to my early, early tiger (with improvements of course) because I DID look at a real tiger and painted the starfish shape, etc. and I really liked it.

I stopped doing it that way because of using rainbow cake sponging but I bet now that I'm better I could find a way to do both.

Thanks to Perfectly Painted and Shannon's advice (to look to a real tiger) I studied tiger photos then tried a new approach just now. (Taking creative license, of course )
