I'm really excited!! I have my first gig at a restaurant. It's going to be every other Tuesday for 3 hours for their family fun night. The manager said that it is okay for me to wear a "tipping pin". Has anybody had good experience with this? Is it better to put out a tip jar? I'm getting paid to be there, a lesser hourly rate because it's an recurring commitment. Just wondering if it's worth wearing one or not. Is that cheesy?

I'm a fan of the tip jar. If you use one, make sure the container is clear plastic and start off with a few dollars in it. You will get more tips when people can see the money in the tip jar. A long time bartender told me this and in my experience so far, it's true.

I bought a clear plastic container at Walmart and some foam letters (stick on) at Hobby Lobby... spelled out "tips". I also decorated with some foam butterflies.

Good luck!

That's a GREAT idea. I think I will do the same. I'm just getting started so I can't wait to see how this works out. I did have a gig at a softball tournament. It went okay, but got rained out the first day. I'm much happier to be indoors this time! Less to set up also!

I have done it, I have a big mug that says "Tips Accepted" on it with a picture of a clown tipping his hat... there were a couple of times I made more in tips than the hourly they were paying me.
