what's the shimmer in powder and paint?
Anyone know how the manufacturers make shimmer powders and shimmer paint? I heard a nasty rumour that some cosmetic companies are using glass like material and aren't required to list that on their ingredients list? How about face paint/powder?
Re: what's the shimmer in powder and paint?
If it is classed as "cosmetic" it would have to meet the standards set by the FDA wouldn't it?
Have you checked out the story you heard on Snopes? It may be an urban myth.
I know from my classwork in make-up school that the "shimmery" and "shine" in cosmetics often is from material derived from fish scales... You wanted to know that didn't you!?

LOL Fish scales really? NEATO! I had two pre-teens being real smart with me last weekend. Wish I had known that, I'd have sparkled them then told them! LOL

Sometimes it's super fine ground up Mica (a form of rock/mineral).
I've also heard insect carapaces can be irridescent and it is used.

So...
What happens if the person getting the shimmer is allergic to fish/shellfish?
It would certainly take face painting into a new direction...

I think whatever it might be has been chemically treated or in inert. It is the casings afterall, not the meat/fluids etc that may be what people react to.

Rocks and fish scales eh???? Interesting....
I'd never heard of Snopes until now... I'll get right on that.
Thanks for the info

Re: what's the shimmer in powder and paint?
I only recently (ok, about a year ago) found out that Vegans won't eat Honey since Bees make it and it's considered like drinking 'cow milk'.
They definitely might get offended about fish scales and even insects!

Maybe that's why they always look sick? No make-up.

Re: what's the shimmer in powder and paint?
I'm a vegetarian (not vegan...loves my yogurt and my froyo!) but even I had a hard time 'digesting' that fact...So is it unethical to apply it to someone who you know to be vegan without using a disclaimer?
Re: what's the shimmer in powder and paint?
That's getting a little too ... Well, let's put it this way...
Face Painting is voluntary and something people participate in AT THEIR OWN RISK... I'm not about to take up my whole display with disclaimers about POSSIBLE ingredients.
If someone has concerns about ingredients they ask... if the don't ask then I do not feel I need to ask them.
Most things used in cosmetics are synthetic anyway - like lanolin which comes from sheep in it's natural form, it is NOT used in cosmetics the artificial version is and it has nothing to do with sheep.
BTW... do you use sable brushes???

Re: what's the shimmer in powder and paint?
A lot of makeup artist are against sable brushes (and think synthetic things are better - even if the factories are bad for the environment and thereby killing wild animals nearby) and using gelatin for prosthetic can be a problem with people that don't want to be in contact with anything from pigs. So fish scales could be a problem. Think I will ask around. Just because I am curious.
I know a vegan that is having trouble with my carnivorous plants *lol*

Re: what's the shimmer in powder and paint?
I have been asking around and it seems to be a well know facts in vegan circles about the fish scales and insect in cosmetic (apparently mostly in lipstick and nail polish with shine). So no need to put up a warning =)
Re: what's the shimmer in powder and paint?
There you go. People who have issues usually know what to avoid.
Personally... I like using sable. Sable are part of the weasel family, a weasel ate our kittens, therefore, revenge is sweet.

Shannon, I don't use sable brushes but thats just bc I bought synthetic ones, lol. I don't wear fur or leather, but I'd use the brushes I thin, if they were a lot better than synthetic...are they?
However, NY is full of vegan/organic/etc super activists...some dress up in vegetable suits and chicken suits with their PETA literature. Oh well just won't paint them them I guess. Just wondering though, IS there a vegan brand of paint? Or an organic one? (doubt it)

This is made of plants, minerals and clay, plus almod oil. Should be kept cool. I have not tried it. They write the best result is by several thin layers, perhaps followed by a layer of almond oil. Sound to time consuming I think.
It is around 60$ for 140 ml.

Re: what's the shimmer in powder and paint?
It is a mineral makeup......at least all of my shimmer powders are....sorry Shannon, no fish scales in my powders.
the amount of shimmer depends on the mineral blend......I custom mix all of my shimmer powders for maximum sparkle and shimmer
