Can you make money painting the public at a haunted house /hay ride event ?
I was asked to paint some of the actors for a haunted house/ hay ride event not too many to paint ,in exchange for this I can set up a booth to paint the public . The event has three different attractions , bonfire food vendors and Dj . Seven dates in all . Does anyone have any experience with this ? Can I make money?

I haven't worked a small haunted house but at the large theme park events if it's busy a lot of the times boys will want to get the same faces as the actors in the house so they can scare their friends. Blood, fake wounds, etc can be done quickly for a cheap amount and quick time. A lot of time if its a smaller community the adults will let the children run wild and generally give them what they ask for. If there is nothing else offered to you I would say just go for it. Generally what you offer will be ten times better than what someone volunteering to do will produce. A gig is a gig is a gig

Depends what else is going there for people to spend their money on. When I was with my ex we used to do one that the firefighters put on, and did quite well at. This was in a decent sized city and the event didn't have much else to pay for aside from getting into the house.

On good weather days it's good...not as good as a paid gig, but lots of fun...and better than sitting at home!!
I would suggest they pay for your paint for the actors, it's adds up fast and we go through about a grand in paint on 40 actors for 22 nights (Using Wolfe)

I painted for a local haunted house last year. It was at the end of an abandoned plaza w/ the entrance through the back doors. It was probably a very cheap rental since there are so many closed businesses these days. I set up a booth & didn't do very well. Most people didn't want to leave the long lines to get painted(it was 4 houses in one & they could buy trips to all 4). Most people also had only enough money to get into the house. I'm not doing it again this year. It might work out better if you were inside or if there were a range of opportunities for people to pick from. Mine had food vendors also & they didn't do well either(most stopped coming after a few weeks).

I'm painting at a Corn Maize that has a "Field of Screams" haunted maze, it doesn't open till dark and that's precisely when I stop making money. I get to paint all of the little kids that do the other cutsie attractions but I rarely paint anyone over 10ish. Yesterday was the exception when I painted 13 mustaches on an entire family. I think the haunted houses attract teenagers and they are so unpredictable...they either wanna be silly with their friends and get something crazy, or act like they think face painting is lame (but you know they secretly want it .

Glitterfly and I have done quite well at a pumpkin patch... she's been doing it all month and I filled in the other day (and will be again this weekend). It's been really good there... bring bug spray though

Last weekend was my first time at our local corn maze. I was told they are busiest during the haunted attractions time. Well, I had nearly NO business the first night. Four faces, and by the time you consider what I spent to run my generator, and the little bit of paint I used, I made a grand total of $10 for the entire 5 hours! I set up a little earlier on Saturday, and since it was before dark, got a little more traffic. (emphasis on LITTLE)
I'm really gonna be pushing the neon paints, since they have black lighting in the haunted maze.

Perry Noia , can I ask if you were painting at night or during the day ?

I got this same offer from a local haunted house. I told them I would do it if they supplied my materials for the actors and never heard back from them. Honestly, I think that having them pay for materials is only fair. In exchange, they get your talent, which is bound to better than what they had before.

I was there from 2 to 6... tomorrow I'll be there 11 to 6

The next 2 weekends will be the biggies for the Pumpkin Patch/Haunted Fields...they are also the biggest for gigs...I hope everyone does well financially & has lots of fun too!
Re: Can you make money painting the public at a haunted house /hay ride event ?
Update ,Well it didn't go how I would have wanted the owner was not truthfull with me . She stated to me that most actors would be wearing mask and they still wanted their eye area and neck area done for the ones that wore mask she also said she would supply us with the fake blood as agreed . Well there was only five actors that wore mask ,She also said not to many to paint . Well about thirty actors later no blood supplied to me , just had to use my paint for blood splatter effect , by the way they wanted blood on their clothing also . and to top it off only made 15 dollars . I told the owner this was not working out . She was upset because she really like how the actors were painted .She did ask me how much I would charge to paint the staff when I told her my rate she just couldn't aford it .

I have done great at daytime harvestfest and pumpkin patches . Night time haunted trails not so well . Like I told my husband its a learning process I will learn what works and what doesn't .
Re: Can you make money painting the public at a haunted house /hay ride event ?
You can have her pay for actors' paint supplies and do a trade out for vendors fees on when you are available for daytime painting...make your own (cheap) blood...no actor-customer satisfaction needed, they are paid to wear it! (Oh, & if it's any distance, have her pay your gas!) You get free jam time (with supplies), she gets painted actors... & you can make money at the pumpkin patch! (If she has one)
