My first display board! so proud
I was proud of it! I choose designs inspired by artists here and made masks. It worked great! I painted them all by painting them onto paper cutouts. then I taped them to the poster. I want to use something sturdier next time, and velcro the designs (so I can change them out) but not bad for a last minute design sketch! people can see i painted them instead of photos- which someone else could've taken AND i would have to deal with photo releases. less paperwork the more happy i am.
I know Melissa and Doug carries 'skin tones' paper with faces already etched in!! Its on my 'to buy' list next time I hit up toysrus... or Michael's for that matter. see?

thanks for looking! Im so proud of my little lightbulb. =0)
Re: My first display board! so proud
Great idea! That looks really nice. Thanks for the link. I was looking online for something like that last weekend, but couldn't find anything good. Ended up drawing my own. Think I might buy one of those pads for a master and just run new ones off on the color copier.
Re: My first display board! so proud
Great job Tara! I wish I had thought of that! The few nights before my first huge gig, I was painting my face literally 5 times a day for anything I wanted on my board! This would have been much easier. . .plus I would have been able to avoid going into my day job with my face tinted green Thank God for make up! (by the way the olive oil trick on another thead works great - now I can paint green on myself without staining!)
Re: My first display board! so proud
thank you very much!
I was going to do it all white until i remembered someone on here had mentioned trying skin tones to see how the designs pop. so I used orange, brown and some old orange I found that was faded, plus a little white. i think it looked better and turned out great. thanks!

I do something similar. I think Lonewolf inspired the original face sheet. I use water colors and then make changes and set up the chart via computer. I have sheets for single eye designs, half faces, and full faces. This one is a combo sheet that I had used for a little busier gig. The nice thing about scanning them and modifying them on the computer, is that I can use them over and over again.

Your board is awesome and I like that you have the names of the designs under the picture to make it easier to identify which one they are picking!

Very nice boards!
I really like the idea of the skull mask, tara - the skull in the middle with cross bones hilights - one for the inspiration file for sure

Re: My first display board! so proud
i liked it because if i change my mind of what I want displayed I can just paint up a new one, and change it with velcro.
i want to offer different faces for different events. that way I can have 'easier' designs up if alot are expected or fancy ones if less, or whatever I feel like doing. maybe using more green or whatever. Im weird like that, and do better with painting when i want to paint it. so i can tailor each event to it own. Plus I tell business people I can make designs using their logos if they want, they love that! so I can whip'em up on the display board to.

Getting ready to make a display board.. Have read this thread before and it has taken me hours to find it again...Into my Favourites it goes..Thanks for the fabulous ideas!!!
What do you think about this idea?
I'm going to try and post a picture , but I'm thinking about using this as my board to inspire ideas, but not set expectations about the details of the designs. I paint to demand - meaning that if I'm at a party with 10 kids, I do nice, elaborate designs with bling, etc. However, if I'm swamped with 20 kids in line, I do the 3 minute version!
I found these adorable wooden cuties at Michaels. I also do Spiderman, Batman, Hello Kitty, etc., but I figure I can always offer those verbally, and just use this as inspiration when kids don't know what they want.
I'm trying to get pictures of my favorite faces, but never seem to have time to paint AND take pictures, and I don't want it to look like my daughter is the only person I ever paint! LOL. Not to mention that she won't let me do boy designs on her...
What do you think about using "symbols" rather than actual photographs?
OK...now I have to figure out how to post the photo I took of the board!

Re: My first display board! so proud
A downfall with cutouts is you're inevitably going to have kids who want their painting to "look like the picture" and that can be a pain if it isn't something you've painted, and can duplicate again and again, just like your examples. You don't want to have to keep saying "it will be similar."

My first display board, so proud!
Really nice. I am working on mine now. I didn't think of skin tone and didn't see that color when I bought poster board for cutting out faces to paint on. I have already cut out like 50 faces to paint on and sprayed tacky on them and sealed them with wax paper so all that work is just to late to turn back now. I will be posting it shortly. I really admire the look of yours and hope mine comes out nice anyways.
Re: My first display board! so proud
I love your board, Taradoodles! and I love the idea of scanning then into the computer so that I can change and rearrange them easily, Painted Dragon. Someone on another thread, I'm not sure who, also mentioned that you should keep a smaller version by your seat for reference just in case. Great ideas, Ladies!
