Would you work on Christmas Day?
I've just had to give a quote for working on Christmas Day, I figured I could do it as all as my family have moved out of the city and the thought of spending christmas day with the inlaws doesn't really float my boat.
So I put in what I perceive to be a pretty silly quote - too high for them to actually take me up on it...
got me wondering what would you do???
Would you work christmas day ? and if so for how much?
xx

Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
Heck yes, if I'm not snowed in! Christmas is just another boring day off here. I'd jump at the chance to make some money.
Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
I couldn't. My family is still too young, and Christmas is a really big deal! They would be so upset if I weren't there. Christmas is still really big with the extended family too, and I am sure they wouldn't let me live it down if I chose work over Christmas.
In saying all that, if someone wanted to pay me at least 4 times my hourly rate, for just a few hours later in the afternoon/evening I could almost be tempted.

Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
I probably should have said I'm non-religious so that's not a factor.
Oh and they only wanted 2 hours so I wouldn't lose the whole day per say.
I quoted them a bit over 3 times my usual rate

Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
I wouldn't do it, don't care how much money is involved. Christmas is very personal for me, not just because of my kids, but for me. That is not to say I wouldn't work other holidays i.e. memorial day, labor day, the 4th of July, or new years day
I would also not work Good Friday or Easter Sunday or Thanksgiving day or New year's eve.
......but that's just me

Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
I am with Daizy, I have two little kids and just couldn't be away from them. Plus, I work full time and that is one of my few days off But having said that, I bet the $$$ would be great and so needed at that time of year!
Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
I work on Boxing Day. Done that for two years. Not for the money because it pays not so well, but for the experience. If your family has nothing against it, why not?

Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
If you can manage working that day, fantastic.
I wouldn't give up Christmas day as I have 3 little ones and it is such a fun day for them and I wouldn't miss it ever. The other reason is, before I had kids, I pretty much worked every single Christmas, I'm just totally over it now.
If they pay you a good price to be there, that's awesome. And think about how special you will be making Christmas for the kids you paint.

Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
I don't have kids, or, as of right now, a significant other. I hang out with my parents and grown siblings all day, after having breakfast with the neighbours (don't even remember how that one started, haha) and opening presents, but we don't have tons going on during the day until it's food prep time.
So at this point, I would, but only for a very large chunk of money. I'd originally thought that maybe 2X my regular rate + travel, but after seeing this thread, I would have to quote at least 3X + travel! Plus there's my minimum time. So if someone wanted to pay me $600+ for 2 hours of work on Christmas Day...I'd do it
During the day, anyway. Need to be home for dinner! Though my family is pretty awesome; if I had to take a $$$ job in the evening, we'd likely do Christmas lunch instead.
I'm also non-religious so I definitely work Easter Sunday (yay brunch at golf clubs!), though I'd have to get a pretty penny to work NYE!

I painted for a Winterwonderland. On the 26th and 27th. Snowqueens, Dickens-characters, fairy-like creatures, forrest creatures. Love to do that!

Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
only 2 hours and 3x the money. gotta pay those christmas bills back. I'd do it, but then again we celebrate christmas on christmas eve since we have some major driving to be with family.
Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
I probably would if it was in the afternoon early evening like 4 or 5pm. If it was a good paying gig, of course

Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
I would do it in a heartbeat. Especially since it's not an all-day job, it would be easy to wiggle everything else around it (for us, holidays are movie marathon day anyway. no big deal to skip out on one sequel, right?) I would have only quoted double my hourly though. That would have been enough to get me out the door. But do let me know if they bite @ 3 1/2 times- I'll revise my expectations!
Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
Well, I'm also non religious so Cristmas Day isn´t special for me in that way. BUT I've got a religious and very traditional father who would kill me if I´m not sitting at the table on Christmas. AND I can't forget my two little boys and their imploring looks either. SO I wouldn´t work on Christmas Day. But if I didn´t have my family here and they doubled my rate, I would. I'd get some extra money and I'd make those children very happy. Just my point of view

Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
Can't see it. Family needs to feel valued above money at some point. I would rather eat crackers with my family and friends than miss a chance to let them know how important they are to me. Having said that, I have no problem with others making their choices for what works for them.

Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
I won't work Yule/Winter Solstice, Thanksgiving, my son's birthday or my anniversary. Those are all sacred days to me.
Every other day is up for grabs.
If it is a major holiday (whether it is for me or not), I charge at least double, if not triple, my normal fee.
My husband, however, encourages me to take all work no matter the day as long as people pay. He always says we can rearrange celebrations. I prefer to send my girls out for me.

Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
I would defiantly charge at least 3x for any thing less than 2hrs and It would be something that I would have to discuss it with the family before agreeing to it. after all I did have to postpone Christmas this year. My kids are pretty cool. They know that Mommy will make it up to them I always do.

Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
I have two young boys and my first reaction was naaa, but then if they bite at your 3 and bit times your usual rate and it's only for 2 hours, I think I would probably do it.
Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
we always celebrate christmas...and i have a nephew as well (he counts as my kid lol) ...but i wouldnt mind wrking that day at all...our celebrations starts after 7pm on the 24th and end around 5pm on the 25th lol ...once we eat and give out the presents..take some pictures and drink something something lol we head out our own separate ways visiting friends or relatives....the only issue i see is..if youre going to do the cooking..then we have a major problem! hahaha ....i think it depends the time youve been asked to work for...where..how much (has to be worth it) and if its going to clash with something else like visiting family or whatever lol...otherwise..i dont see a problem...i dont think youll be out all day and night..plus if you have kids...im sure theyd appreciate something extra from santa
Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
I should have added that any holiday dinner is always in our home. We have the smallest place (2 bdrm mobile) but everyone likes coming here so here it always is. LOL. I couldn't go out to work even if I wanted to. It isn't uncommon to have a few lonely widowed friends, my stepdaughter's maternal grandparents, my inlaws, my parents and a few of my siblings as well as my stepdaughter's maternal brother and sometimes their friends or girlfriends/boyfriends. ROFL.

Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
This is a hard one for me. We are all about Christmas in this house and I would KILL my husband if he worked on Christmas Day.... but if it was an awesome gig that happened to fall in the afternoon after present opening and before dinner at Ma's, I might just consider it.
Re: Would you work on Christmas Day?
i post 'block out dates' on my brochure. As much as i love face painting, i love my family more and refuse to put them in 2nd place. Besides, i LOVE Thanksgiving and Christmas!
a few years ago, i had a woman insist that i paint at her house thanks giving weekend. I told her i would be out of state for the 4-day weekend and not able to paint. she called me back 4 different times trying to get me to schedule. It was after this that i put the block out dates on my brochure that encompass Thanksgiving and Christmas.
