My first monster mask Empty My first monster mask

Post by Sunrise Wed Jun 08, 2011 2:12 pm

Nothing very original about this one, but it's something I've needed in my repertoire. I so desperately need more boy stuff, but getting my son to model is like pulling teeth; he can't sit still for more than ten seconds. (Good practice, I guess.)

Totally aped Daizy's photo-style; it looks so classy.

Anybody got tips for jazzing up a monster mask? There was more I wanted to do but his patience was at an end.

I like the mask, great job. I need to hone up my monster mask, since it is a very elementary mask. Love your business name too. One of my favs I have saw.

Very nice! (and I agree with Eva - the name is very cool too!)

I was trying to think of any thing you could add to the mask - hard to do, because it is so clean and professional looking - the only thing I could think of is maybe to add some hilighting/shadowing to add depth to the wrinkles/creases and horns?

Nice work!

Yeah, I do want to do one where there is more shadowing that follows the contours of the horns and brows and stuff. Next time...

Nice job. Very clean, yet detailed. Something I've seen others do that is cool is the mesh bag or stencil texture. I haven't found a good stencil yet...might have to order one online.

Nice.

Mesh bag? I've never heard of that! Have to look that one up. More texture would be good.

I'm fond of the name myself. Smile

Great work! I love the expression as well, and the mask! I also try to paint my grandsons! They probably think they are going to grandma's house to get face painted AGAIN rather than just a visit! LOL I think I'm going to have to back off a bit...

Love it, Love it, Love it!

I was going to suggest the mesh bag too! I have cut up some old orange bags and put tape around the edges to keep it firm, and then just sponged a slightly different colour over the painting (I would sponge the yellow over the orange in your painting)

Post by len sherrard Wed Jun 08, 2011 11:12 pm

I got a mesh bag that had held watermelons from one of those big box stores, I cut it open down the side, and opened up the top and bottom, just in case i had a "monster in need". A young man asked for a dragon face, so I grabbed the open mesh bag, and wrapped it completly around his head, then spounged the "scales" on. It gave me more freedom to use the spounge without the need to reposistion the mesh "screen" over each cheek/forhead, ect. It cut down on the painting time quite a bit. I have several different stencils, and meshes, but this is now my favorite, and fastest, method. Shocked

I've never seen a mesh bag for watermelons! Is the net larger than one for an orange? Ian I'd love to see the wrap around effect. Does it look the same as repositioning a smaller one, or does it also give it an over lapped look with more depth? Either way sounds super cool!

Sunrise, I really like your monster! Did you use a brush to apply the yellow to get the shape right? I think you could add a little more shading in orange to the "bumps" around the outside to give them a little more depth if you wanted, but I think it looks great and pretty quick the way it is Smile Awesome job!

Ok, definitely looking for a mesh bag! Thanks for the tips, everybody! Smile

And, yes - I outlined with yellow first before sponging in the color - sponging first usually doesn't end well for me; I need boundaries! Razz

I use an orange bag. It's the red net bag that you get when you buy a bag of "cuties" (clementines - tangerines.) I also took someone else's idea from the forum (Michelle?) and cut out a square with duct tape around the edges (like a frame) so it doesn't flop around.

The mesh bag idea for texture is always great and I would suggest trying the darker colour on the outside and applying BOTH colours with a split cake and then sponging in the eyes...check out lisajoyyoung's Blue Monster video!!!!!

I tried my first monster too on one of my boys. He's older and had to beg but wanted to try one since I got inspired at FABAIC. Still needs work but not too bad.

HappyVickory love the horns at the corner of the mouth.

Sunrise great job! Love the character around the nose. How do you get the Daizy style photo with the writing on it if you wouldn't mind sharing. Is it just your camera?

Sorry don't know how to flip photo

Encouraged for your work. Ok, I've tried my own first monster mask. I know I have to work much more on it, but it's my first attempt. I've not dared to paint the nose. Maybe next time... And I know my eyes are unclear , my lines are dirty and my shadows awful. Practice, practice, practice. (btw the best in the pic is my creepy son)

So inspired! All of your masks are so great! I decided after seeing this thread to paint my first monster mask too, I was going to do more horns and shading but my son had lost all of his patience and was doing the antsy dance. It did take me WAY too long...but I'm sure if I did the same face again it'd only take me half the time this one took.
