What is the best red?
I just got my first paying birthday gig and it happens to be 3 yr olds wanting spiderman. I am not very good at spiderman to begin with but I have some time to practice...whew. I am not sure which red works best though. I will need to order it as I don't have much red so I wanted to ask your opinion on the best red both for coverage as well as not staining clothing or skin. I will gratefully accept all tips, ideas, pics and hints too.

Re: What is the best red?
I love my TAG red because it is a real red (not orange.)
The best tip I can give is this - When I tried to make even spider web lines, it never looked good. The only way I can get the web part to look good is to vary the width of the lines (thicker on the outside to thin in the middle is how I do it now.)

Re: What is the best red?
thank you so much! I was leaning towards the Tag so that helps.

Re: What is the best red?
I haven't used TAG, but I like the Wolfe red as well as Paradise red. They are true reds and not orange-ish like the DFX red.

Re: What is the best red?
Paradise red is great - but it's a deep red so I use it for blood.... I use Paradise Beach Berry - it's a realy bright red and it comes off really easy.... I find I get a lot of staining with Tag.
Re: What is the best red?
Snazaroo red is the exact Spider Man red and definitely will not stain their skin. The webs come together between the eyes, make all the lines come from there, then connect them with it curving toward the center and pointing to the outside. The eyes point to the top of their temples and are NOT curly on the tips.
Sorry, I've seen some really horrid Spider Man faces and there's no excuse for professional face painters to do our most requestes design wrong.

Re: What is the best red?
The only big snazaroo cake I have is snazaroo red, it is true red and I feel so safe painting the whole face with it because it won't stain.
Re: What is the best red?
Paradise beach berry is the best!
Snaz is good too, but I found that it gummed up just as bad as snaz black did in the heat, so if you are anywhere warm, you might have to think up a cooling system for it.

Re: What is the best red?
Snaz Red is "classic spiderman" red and it's very easy to lay down for a base. I would recommend using Wolfe or DFx white and black for the lines over the base. Use Paradise black if you use black that isn't over a base (it won't stain nearly as bad as Wolfe and DFx).
Re: What is the best red?
Thank you everyone! I appreciate the tips on how to paint the web and eyes too!

Re: What is the best red?
So I just read 3 yr old and think eep there's just no way most boys that age will sit for a whole face. Even a mask is pushing it..
I remember seeing a great youtube of a spidey that just covers one eye. For that age I'd be sticking to Snaz or paradise but accepting that boys that age squirm and that messes with line work.
Doing the eye piece and then maybe adding a spidey arm paint that they can sit and watch while you paint then tell them it shoot webs out - may help. Also little boys that age are eye flinchers so often I draw a circle around the eye, leave that blank and then do the rest of the design from there if that makes sense?

Re: What is the best red?
Thank you. I have done loads of 3 yr olds and you're right..they are not real good at sitting still. I printed off a spidey coloring page and will do some playing around with it. I have a little neighbor girl (7) who is just as squirmy as the 3 yr olds so I might "borrow" her face this weekend. I found some Snaz pallettes but our local dance and facepaint store only has the pallettes and not the cakes so I might have to just get the whole kit to get the red. I can always make some split cakes with the other colors I guess. I am running out of time for the wait on shipping.

Re: What is the best red?
I'm in the Snaz Red boat for sure... love it! If you leave the tops off your paints, gummy paint is rarely a problem. Mine are too dry and hard if anything, but always go on well after a water spritz.
Below is my SUPER FAST spiderman for wriggly little boys. NO painting below the eyes at all, which is where I get the most problems with young boys. I add white highlights if the child is sitting well for me.
Here's a one-eye spider girl that I copied from somewhere else years ago. I get boys asking for it in red a lot too, but most pick the forehead one which is great with me because it's faster anyway.

Nice!

Nice designs! I like that they are quick yet very effective.

Spidy sense..... hahaha
Guess you wouldn't like my spiderman then.
I put a spider right in the middle - I know it's not what spiderman has... but I only do it as a mask cause painting over little boys mouths is something I stay away from..... so it's not a true spiderman face anyway.
In my experience kids love the spider and usually ask for one on the hand too.
I wonder if other painters are looking at my spiderman and thinking - that's just wrong! No curly eyes though! lol!
I get lazy on the webs too.
Re: What is the best red?
Love the samples...thanks so much! I really appreciate the help and am so glad I found this sight.
I don't do mouths for kids anyway. Even my own mouth (and I am 50..LOL) isn't such a great idea because I forget and smudge it almost immediately with my coffee.
Miss Angie, I absolutely love the forehead idea. Still Spidey, but a better chance of it staying on for longer than a few minutes without it getting smudged/streaked/wiped off.

Re: What is the best red?
Awesome spider-people! That girly one from Angie is going in my inspiration file!
Anyway, I'm sorry I don't have pics, but I'll try and explain something a-la the Wolfe Bros. (they adressed spidey directly at their seminar) The hallmark, or what makes spidey Spidey, is the eyes. No matter how you slice it, the center between eyes has to form a sort of an X shape. Whatever you do on the outside edge (toward the ears) doesn't much matter, but the area between the eyes has to be an x. Tash's comes close to doing it, but the corners on the bridge of the nose could be sharper. (Imagine 2 big white arrows pointing at the bridge of the nose.) You almost have to think of Spiderman's eyes as triangles rather than teardrops.
Here's some google images of spiderman, so you can see what I mean.

As far as webs and spiders goes, that's all just highlights. And less is more IMO. In my own painting, I just do a group of 3 connected strands on the forehead and one on each cheek. Its easy to bugger up Spidey by trying too hard.
Just my opinion. Maybe I'm not a fabulous artist, but I'm a big superhero guy.

Re: What is the best red?
I didn't used to do the eyes in the triangle shape because the merchandise that the kids wear has his eyes flat on top and curved on the bottom, but with that shape, it's too easy to end up with the white curling around their temples and looking girly. With this shape of eyes, it looks much more masculine and it matches some of the comic book artists.
Re: What is the best red?
Angie, Tash & Perry great Spidey examples! I am a Snaz red fan all the way, definitely, true spiderman red and lasts 4-ever! I was at a day care the other day and running short on time, a little girl asked for a girly spidey. Normally I would have been at a loss, but I had just been to Angie's site the day before and saw that darling pink spidey. I did it with Tag pearl purple and she looked sooooo cute! Thank you for the inspiration, Angie!

Yay! I love when someone asks for something and I can actually do it because I've seen it done somewhere before. That's how I justify cruising websites so much. You just never know when you'll find something that you may need later.
Re: What is the best red?
CrazyPainter, I had posted a thank you about the proper way to do spidey but it still hasn't appeared. Thanks for the info on the cross in the center. I checked out the link and some are of the same pics I had printed off so that's what I will practice. I really appreciate that tip and the link.
Perry, thanks for the awesome visual for me.

Re: What is the best red?
Here's my mask:
I don't like that the web goes all the way to the spider, but oh well. You could do a hexagon type shape or make them come to a point if you didn't like the spider idea.
I was kind of going for this look (Done by Wendy Holroyd):

Re: What is the best red?
Thats the same sort of spiderman I go for. Not having to paint white under the eyes is so much easier and there is very little fiddly outlining.
I am a snaz red fan too!
