Silver undercoat?
I'm looking for a silver to use under colors that stain. Does anyone have a preference?
Also, do people find that snaz black and paradise black have approximately the same drying times?
Thanks--

Re: Silver undercoat?
I really like DFX/Wolfe FX for silver. I absolutely hate the metallics that paradise makes unless they've improved since I last used them. The palette I bought had terrible color consistency and the paint was crumbly, gritty, and no matter what ratio of water to paint I used, the color was always so darn sheer! I couldn't get a good layer of color down with any of the metallics (except for metallic green and blue). I even bought refills, thinking that I just bought a bad pallete, and they were just as bad. But when I found Wolfe and DFX, I thought I'd died and went to metallic heaven after years of metallic hell.
As far as drying time is concerned, I think Paradise dries quicker because Snaz just LOVES water. Hope this helps.

Re: Silver undercoat?
The Paradise metallics still are not the best, that's for sure.
But, to use as an undercoat, then you don't really care about color, right?
Do you want any silver to show through? Is that why you are trying to undercoat with that, instead of a sealer? If yes, then the prettiest silver is from Kryolan. The attached photos shows how shinny the silver is. But, it is an odd product, a bit soft and flakey. Still, it is my favorite for doing silver necklaces.
But, if you want something to BASE with, then the DFX metallics are probably best.
What colors are staining for you? Have you tried making a paste with a soft soaf and letting it set about 30 seconds?

Re: Silver undercoat?
True, the color of the silver used as a base isn't important. However, if it lays on really sheer like my silver did, I don't see it doing much of anything in the way of preventing staining. Totally loving the necklaces by the way! I've always wanted to learn how to paint jewelry like that...

Lilly has a fantastic 3D jewels book...
check it out -- if you buy directly from her, it is less than what SillyFarm charges and she has an e-book version too.

Re: Silver undercoat?
I use DFX silver(you can find it in the Forum Shop) for my undercoat. It works well to prevent staining from some of those colors like green. Make sure to let it dry before painting over it.
As far as drying times with the blacks, I don't see much of a difference. You may want to take a small spritzing bottle & spray your sponge before loading it with paint. This will help your paints not get too wet & dry quicker. Snaz black is very chalky looking & dull when it dries. Paradise is much bolder & has better coverage(I prefer it). Neither are amazing for linework. I do use paradise for linework when I want a more shadowy look, but not for bold lines. For lines I use DFX.

Re: Silver undercoat?
Thanks, guys. Well, I haven't personally had too much trouble with staining, though the other day a friend asked if I'd been practicing on myself because one side of my face had a greenish tinge, and Ithought I'd gotten it all off.
It's more preventative. I've now done a couple of parties, etc. for friends and haven't had complaints about staining, though i don't know that I used much green. As I venture forth professionally, I just want to be prepared, based on what I've read here. I've been using mostly dfx, and I'm out of the original snaz black I had and almost out of dfx white, so I'm basically looking for a) a black for bases and possibly for linework around kids' eyes, b) a white base (I'd love to try tag pearl white, and c) I thought a silver for under, say, a large green dragon or a hulk, etc.
I know some people here haven't had any problems with staining, even with dfx black, but I thought someone made a good point that if you're at a birthday party the parent may not be there to take a business card with washing instructions...

Re: Silver undercoat?
I'd use something like snaz sparkle white, instead, if you are 'undercoating' colour. I did when I started painting but I don't know, never had any complaints.
I found the sheer whites better as the silver sometimes muddied the colours going on top.
And I aggrre re Paradise metallics; just bought a bunch as I was assured they had improved since I gave up on them several years ago. Nope, crumbly nodules that just won't reconstitute, unuseable:(

Re: Silver undercoat?
I have a real problem putting other brands of paints OVER Snaz. Is it just me?
As to that staining, make sure you do not RUB the paint to get it off. Just take a nice soap (make-up remove, baby shampoo, etc.), put a bunch on the design, and LET IT SIT. That is the magic. Give it a good 30 seconds, then take it off with just your hands and water.
If any is still on, use baby oil.
If you use a cloth, or a wipe, it pushes the pigments into the skin, and THAT causes the stains to be worse.
It is not 100 percent, but it works pretty good for me )

:::grin:::
For those of you on the East Coast, I am doing lots of jewels things at FABAIC. Plus, during the jams at night, I would be happy to show you. There are also some more of my necklaces photos at http://www.funfacepainting.com/jewelrydragonnecklaces.html
However, have you seen the jewels Annie Reynolds and Lynne Jamieson do? @#$%^&* I am a hack compared to those two! Plus, Annie has a trick that is a much faster method than mine. They are both doing pre-day classes at FABAIC, and then doing a tour afterwards around the USA. So, you might be able to catch them on those.
To my credit, people more often do a double take thinking my jewels are real, than with Annie or Lynne. ***BUT***, the designs those two come up with are, well fantastic! See what I mean in these two photos. @#$%^& Those are good! They make me to a double take!

Same here... I would love, LOVE to attend FABIAC.... but I'm a poor broke college student right now and am about to leave home for my 3 month externship. So I will have a very uneventful face painting season this summer... and I may up dissappearing off the forum for a while again because of it

Re: Silver undercoat?
Yup I just Love Lynns stuff - she's about the most talented, original painter out there.
Re: Silver undercoat?
Lynne and Annie are AMAZING. I keep an "inspiration" book of ideas. I think about half of it is their stuff!
The two of them are staying with me when they do their Los Angeles tour. Maybe some of their greatness will seap over into me while they sleep ... hhmmmmm. :::grin::::

Re: Silver undercoat?
I"m just going to chime in here with - I have tried DFX silver and Paradise silver and Tag silver for this purpose ... using as a base... and the dfx silver works the best for the exact reason Punky was saying - it has better coverage.
Lilly - you have blown me away once again. Your work is always awe inspiring.

Re: Silver undercoat?
I have had the green staining problem with DFx, I even put out a I am never using DX green again thread - heaps of awesome suggestions were offer by the wonderful forum members on how to get rid of or avoid staining and I have now tried almost all of them with great success, but DFX Silver or Gold as an undercoat work brilliantly.
I've only used DFX Black and love it so haven't tried an others yet . . . sorry I can't help on that one!!

Re: Silver undercoat?
I love the Paradise silver mixed with Mehron silver powder, but if you're using it as an undercoat, go ahead and use the Paradise silver on its own--I LOVE Paradise for bases. The Kryolan Interferenze silver is VERY sheer but looks great as a shimmery overlay
