Silver and Gold favorites? Empty Silver and Gold favorites?

Post by twobluestripes Fri Aug 27, 2010 6:56 pm

I did a bit of searching, but did not find very much on silver and gold face paint.
I don't currently have any in my kit, but I think it's definitely something I need to buy next!

What brands does everyone use for their silver and gold? I sampled the silver Metallix DFX (all my paints are DFX so far and I love them), and the hue was not too grey, but it seemed a little translucent to me, especially for line work.

I'm definitely looking to get the closest match to actual metal that I can in terms of hue, and looking shimmery and metallic is of course important. I'd like to use it for details, line work, and cheek art as well as sponging or brushing large areas!

What do you recommend? What are you using now, and the pros and cons of that brand?

Thanks! My first thread here. I love you One thing I'm focusing on now is building up a kit that allows me more creativity than just my basic little palette.

I use mostly DFX but I also have and love the Mehron Metallic Powder that you have to mix with the mixing liquid.... it is gorgeous. Just don't mix more than you will use as it is a one time use. http://www.mehron.com/Mixing_Liquid_p/129m.htm

I also really like the Mehron Paradise gold metal metallic and the silver bullett metallic.

Kryolan has a beautiful gold and silver interferenz. http://www.kryolan.com/en/index.php?cid=109&mnu=32&id=111&pageid=1

My bet for what you are doing is the metallic powder. Hugs Helen

Yellow gold - I use Wolfe
Old gold - Kryolan Interferenz Bronze is lush
Sheer and shimmery - Grimas has several shades of gold that are very pretty but light

Solid opaque silver that actually looks like metal - the OLD Wolfe was great (I still have some)
All purpose silver - Grimas, shiny and fairly solid
Sheer and shimmery - Grimas Pearl Silver and Kryolan Interferenz Silver. Both are very sheer and pearly more than metallic.

Snaz silver and gold are weak and insipid. But can be blended with other colors for a nice effect. Such as using Snaz Gold with Yellow Ochre for a nice lion base colour.

Kryolan Metallics are a bit fussy to work with but can be nice if you get the hang of them.

Kryolan Interferez Copper is great - like new pennies!

I have dfx silver & gold. They're not amazing for linework, but make good bases. I love using metallic white, gold, metallic orange & bronze for the base for my tigers. They give that extra WOW!

I didn't like Paradise gold and silver and I bought snaz in gold - bad - and dfx silver - ok - so I put the mehron gold and silver powders on top and mixed them in and now they rock! Once I used the mehron gold mixing powder there was no going back. The powder won't mix with just water but will blend in with a cake.... the gold also mixes awesome with browns for doggies and bears etc.... and mixes wonderfully into the wild orchid!

thanks for the tip on mixing the powders directly onto the DFX silver and gold. if they're already good for bases, it seems like the mehron powder will be just what i need to make them look beautiful for smaller details or lines.

I received the Mehron gold mixing powder today and I added it to my DFX gold and WOW- does it pop! I also ordered the Paradise Silver Bullet to compare it to my DFX metallix silver... I like the Paradise better! It has much more sheen to it. I will probably also order the silver mixing powder to go with it, as well, sometime in the future.

I took a pic of my paint tray and you can see the gold is sooo much shinier than all the other colors with the mixing powder mixed into it. I also painted a quick fleur de lis and took a pic of it.. I paint A LOT of fleur de lis, especially during football season (being in Saints territory). Before, even using the DFX metallix gold, it was sometimes very hard to get it opaque enough to use on the fleur de lis. Now it's very opaque and solid looking- almost like real gold jewelry-- and doesn't even really need any glitter!

If you like the gold powder, you will love the silver too! It really adds that sheen we are looking for. My terminator and robots looks AMAZING now (my avatar was done before I got the powder - you should see it POP now)...

I don't. But it is really easier than you think! You just take an old fan brush, and dry-brush some dark brown in a few spots under where the outside of the design will be (looks like dirt/bruising and adds depth). Then fill in the basic shape with silver - the whole thing. Then outline in black, "smudge" some of the black while it is still damp, section the silver however you like into like 6-8 sections, and make black "dots" (large) with white highlights for the "bolts". Highlight here and there with white and add whatever else you like, and you have it. It is hard the first time, takes forever, and then it quickly becomes one of your quickest designs! It is just SO forgiving, too.... Looks impressive for not too much work. Just get it down that first time, and you are set!

is the paint soft when you mix the powder through it...or do you just wet the paint and mix it through??

I put in a teaspoon of the mixing powder then a couple of drops of water and then just kept adding a drop or two until I could mix it well, then put the tray into the freezer for a few minutes to solidify the paint again. Works perfectly!
