Dirty shameful, face painting kit!
I was up stalking facebook last night and came across a photo from the Circus that was in town. I love looking at the work of others, I love the colors, the glitter, the blending....... Anyway, I came across the photo below and I was totally disgusted.
[img][/img]
I'm amazed that this was done by the circus. Maybe they were volunteers. But this ticks me off because I have to constantly "educate" clients on my sanitation practices and why their kid won't break out!
Am I being anal? Do I say something to the mom?

Re: Dirty shameful, face painting kit!
That is horrible, I don't think you are being anal at all. It is a shame that this occurs, but not surprising from a circus. I am sure they are more interested in the money they make than the sanitation of their kit. that kit is a total disgrace!!! As for saying something....if you mean the Mom of that child being painted, I probably would show her the photo and explain the dangers of her child being painted by someone using such a kit. Maybe it would encourage her to be more aware in the future.
Re: Dirty shameful, face painting kit!
there's paint on everything and it doesn't look very professional, but I don't see anything particularly disgusting or dangerous there. What is there to say after the fact when you aren't talking to the painter directly?
Re: Dirty shameful, face painting kit!
hmm.... Those people painted all day long for like 3 days here... My kit looks crazy after a day of working and I think the only thing that is truly nasty is the table in which all of the paint is on... the paint actually looks fine. The worst part of those painters is the crappy paintings they did and what they charged for it... My friend had her kid painted and this is what she looked like...

Re: Dirty shameful, face painting kit!
It would stress me out to try and paint in such a disorganized kit, and it definitely needs to be wiped down. I am a bit anal about this sort of thing. It's really easy for a painting kit to look trashy, since paint IS messy anyway, and working a big event is usually crazy busy. I probably spend way TOO much time thinking of ways to keep my working kit looking neat and organized, but this painter definitely didn't spend enough.
(OMgoodness Suzy, that painting is terrible! Were they not using brushes?)

Re: Dirty shameful, face painting kit!
No Linda, blindfolded painters can do better.
But, the paints themselves are reasonably clean - are "proper" face paints, so other than not ever bothering to wash their table or containers...
Looks crap though.

Me personally, with my kit everything has a place and it stays wiped down, i swear its like OCD with it. I just find it more easier to keep everything clean and neat that way you look professional and presentable. Plus i find it easier for clean up, and to find things. I think if they wiped the table they are using down and organized a little better i think it would be ok. as far as the facepaint goes that a whole nother ball field, i mean maybe its true the circus is more worried about quantity rather than quality. Sad but most likey true.

Re: Dirty shameful, face painting kit!
I think its my anal-ness for the craft. And I'm a neat freak at times with my kit. I have a helper who knows her duties as far as keeping my kit organized an neat looking while I'm working. I get worked up in chaos.
I make the assumption that if there work space is messy there may be a few other sanitation steps missed as well.

Wow, and to think people bug out when I give them a quote.
Re: Dirty shameful, face painting kit!
I'm sorry, but there's no way that I'd let my kid get painted when a painter has as setup like the first picture. I have worked with other painters at festivals and I've even seen the way that my kit gits a little harried looking when I work a long, fast paced gig...and I've never seen anything that looks CLOSE to that bad. Nothing in that setup says "professionalism" regardless of what type of paints she's using. As a parent who face paints, I look for the tell tale signs of professionalism first then consider the crowd, how fast the painter is painting and the techniques she uses. That kit says "I don't care how you perceive my cleanliness" to me. Even when I paint, I will occassionally sit a often used color off to the side and the order of my things gets a little jumbled, but that is the extent of my disarray because in my mind, it only takes about 1.2 seconds to put a paint pot where it belongs and maybe 10 seconds to do a quick wipe down if something gets messy...but that's my philosophy.
As for the second picture... no comment?

I would lov to get permission to use that little girl's photo on my website as a "you get what you pay for" photo and add my hourly rate ; )
Cheers,

PS: It doesn't pass the "what is it" test, either!

Re: Dirty shameful, face painting kit!
Maybe we need to have a painting blindfolded thread but maybe on the back instead of the face to avoid poking anyone`s eye out!
I`m with Shannon on this one.

Re: Dirty shameful, face painting kit!
Okay so here's my take on this..
Before I started face painting I only did Glitter Tattoos. My husband is a professional clown. We frequently were asked to include face painting in our parties.
We went to a circus here in town, to mainly study the clowns and such and just to have a good time. I can't off the top of my head even remember the name, so that will give you an idea of the quality of what we saw.
During the intermission, someone came out to give away balloons, concession stuff, pony rides (tied up in a circle), elephant rides and face painting. The person that face painted was one of the acrobatics. She had like 6 different designs. She used all Snazaroo Paint, and had like 4 differnent brushes and maybe like 2 or 3 sponges. She basically just used like 1 inch brushes for all the designs and they were horrible of course. They charged $5 and $10 for the designs .
After then, I decided if they can do that and make some money, then I could give it a try. I would never reccommend or have any children get painted from them.
I'm not anal about my kit, but I pride myself on being sanitary and keeping it at least organized in some way.

Re: Dirty shameful, face painting kit!
I would be getting in so much trouble if you had seen my set up this morning... 150 kids is 90 minutes.... I tipped my water jar over in the last 20 minutes and honestly didn't have time to find my towels to clean it up properly.
Oh and from painting so fast I would often end up with excess water which ended up just dripping from the side of my paints creating one awful mess :S
Usually I am much cleaner, although I do struggle to keep things all in order while painting.

Re: Dirty shameful, face painting kit!
Um, how is 150 kids in 90 minutes even POSSIBLE? What are you, Superwoman?!
(What did you do, fill up water guns and have them walk by?)

Re: Dirty shameful, face painting kit!
I am not entirely sure, I used a split cake with a black on the edge and did just a quick swirly thing or butterfly around the eye, I am not sure if you can really call it a painting. I had someone else putting on glitter and someone else taking the money and mirror.
It was for our schools fundraising for the big Earthquake we just had and all they really needed was some red and black on their faces.

Yeah but Daizy everyone does have there off days and it will happen but i believe for this setup to get so messy it had to take time. and wow 150 kids in 90 minutes!!!! yeah my sunday was probably an off day for me as well i did a kids comedy show and the show sold out over 250 ppl, and it was nonstop painting from start tro finish for like 4 hours! just as the line was down it wentr right back. But the kids loved it and we got invited back. great atmosphere.

Re: Dirty shameful, face painting kit!
OK, my take. The kit does look pretty gross. But, I'm very anal about a clean kit. In my early days I did not clean my kit. I was poorly trained & clueless. I gave a friend's child pink eye. I tossed my paints, restarted everything & learned all I could about keeping a kit clean(ask Shannon... I think I just about drove her nuts with questions about how best to keep it all clean... THANK YOU Shannon!!!!).
On the face painting... REALLY?! They offered that at the circus? When Ringling Bros came to town there was a lady doing the cutest clown faces. They weren't drop dead amazing, but good. Her kit was clean, organized & she used all proper products. I didn't speak with her because I thought it'd be rude(ya know how we all feel when that happens).

wow...that's looks awful and so does the face painting. To me thats unacceptable that looks like its never been cleaned. Gross!

Agreed, when is the painting blindfolded challenge to begin!!!chicneek wrote:Maybe we need to have a painting blindfolded thread but maybe on the back instead of the face to avoid poking anyone`s eye out!

Here is aface pa inting that was done when the circus came to town last summer and I asked these two girls for their photo. When I was looking back through my photography from the weekend events, I really looked at the face painting and thought I could do that but incorporate my past painting experience.....
I was going to post a photo from my winter carnival ppf booth but ..........

Okay here is the pic, I looked through and found one that shows the whole mess. This is the end of day 2, remember we were outside in the snow, and the paint doesn't wipe off my pink vinyl (any suggestions?)
