Website copy question Empty Website copy question

Post by Geekophile Fri Jan 28, 2011 3:30 pm

Ok, I have been working on this stupid thing for far to long. But I'm nearly done-- (yeah!) I just have to do the "about page" which I'm dreading-- But, on to my question. For the copy, should I use First or third person? I've seen it both ways.

Website copy question Empty Re: Website copy question

Post by Kristal Fri Jan 28, 2011 3:37 pm

I think it depends on what you're going for. I use first person to make it a bit more personal as I write like I talk, haha. I spent many years writing show bios in the third person, and got a bit tired of, "Kristal is/Kristal does" and prefer saying "I" instead now. That said, when I write my initial email after booking I do say, "thank you for booking with faceaballoonza!" instead of "thank you for booking with me" - more professional IMO.

What do you feel like doing?

Website copy question Empty Re: Website copy question

Post by AngieAnders Fri Jan 28, 2011 4:24 pm

I personally write third-person because first-person seems feels like I'm bragging on myself. Embarassed But I think either one works just fine. I do think mentioning the artist name (rather than just the business name) is important to establish trust and recognition, whichever you choose. (Plus I just love when I get to a gig and the kids all know my name!)

Website copy question Empty Re: Website copy question

I had it all in third person and I didn't like it. So I changed all the "Sophies" to "I's" and I didn't like that either. The thing is that on some pages "I" feels right and on others "Sophie" feels right. I know I don't want to swap back and forth. Maybe I'll change it back to Sophie? Ugh. I just want to be done.

I hate the way my third person sounds, but I hate feeling like I'm bragging even more. I'm not a big fan of either, but I went with the third person.

I like third person for web... and I hear it's better to use the business name as often as possible in your site (don't know why, a google thing?).

Website copy question Empty Re: Website copy question

Post by Guest Sat Jan 29, 2011 12:56 am

I started out all third person, then did a big "edit" of my site and changed to first person... next time I'll change back again.

Editing your site often helps keep you up on the search engines as the bots look for new content... so editing your text regularly is a good thing.

I tweak it often - but try to keep it consistent at any one time. Don't want to appear schizophrenic.

Website copy question Empty Re: Website copy question

Post by Geekophile Sat Jan 29, 2011 11:17 am

It is done. Went with 3rd person. I like the way it looks, but I still hate the copy so I tried to keep it to a minimum. (especially the about page-- only two sentences!) Whatever- it's done, that's what matters right? I'm going to go add it to my profile now. Notice I'm adding it here before linking up to the party sites. Priorities, you know! http://sophiessmileyfaces.com/

Website copy question Empty Re: Website copy question

Post by AllieDawn Sun Jan 30, 2011 12:57 am

I wound up going with 1st person on mine but feel like I did it in a way that wasn't bragging. More like I was just really excited to share my passion. And I do feel like it makes it more personal and they can tell I'm a human on the other side of that page. Just something I was comfortable with. Although, I need to update my picture! the one on there is almost a year old! haha

Thanks Allie Dawn. It seems like it took forever- So I just threw my hands up and published it as it was. Instant feeling of relief! I'm sure I'll take Shannon's advice and edit it pretty often, but there won't be that initial stress- ya know?

Love the website Sophie! And you're right, it's a LOT of work and easy to get bogged down in it. Such a huge relief to just publish it. You can always tweak it later, but never again will you have the whole weight of it weighing down on you. Good job!

I looked at your new website ....its very nice!.....I like the last page Contact the Artist... In the first paragaraph you mention "Sophie.....", I think you should continue to use your business name instead of just Sophie....'Sophie's Smiling Faces'.....

I made my new website about a week and a half ago, feel free to borrow any verbage: It has errors, its my first one also:
