Mind boggling wealth of info!!
Hey everyone...I'm just now beginning to learn how to use this forum.Big accomplishment for me! I've been reading, reading, and reading posts until my mind is boggled!! How to, what to use, etc. etc. My first and only kit of paints I've ever bought are DFX, and I totally love the metallix. ( I have yet to try white metallix, but can't wait to get my hands on some) I've now seen everybody use split cakes, and I have a few myself, but for some reason my mind seems to freeze when I try to figure out what to use them for. I've watched videos, looked at pictures, and you are all creative with them. I've even made a few myself, but then when it comes to using them, I draw a blank. What's wrong with me?? For some reason I think specific colors have to be used for specific things. crazy, huh? Another thing is I have trouble with making, roses. I've watched video after video and they look so easy to make, yet I always fail. So, I need you seasoned face painters to give me your thoughts, show some of your ideas on split cakes, and somebody PLEASE post a video or a step by step on how to do a pretty rose!! Thanks so much, you all are AWESOME!! signed "stuck inside the box"

I'm having a problem when I make splits too-- I always mess up on the color proportions. It will all seem perfect in the pot, but when I pick it up with the brush the yellow is lost or there is to much black. I think the shape of the container must matter -- maybe switching to a rectangular container help?

My problem isn't with making them, it's what do I use them for?? haha, I know how crazy that must sound!!Geekophile wrote:I'm having a problem when I make splits too-- I always mess up on the color proportions. Re: Mind boggling wealth of info!!
Get your split-cake feet wet with butterflies. From there, it gets easier and easier to think of abstract designs that split cakes will compliment.
Re: Mind boggling wealth of info!!
I like to play with things you'd never think to do with a split. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The rose cake makes an awesome girl dragon tattoo(go to How'd you do that;Dragon Tattoo Step by Step).
Play & have fun... art is never wrong!

Splits and rainbows are great for fast well blended designs. If you make them using contrasting or complementary colors, you will find they eye enjoys the design as well. You can learn more about the color wheel by doing a quick google search. Here's a basic example of what I mean. This is a super fast face. It's done with 2 splits and DFX white, the first split is Orange and Yellow (right next to each other on the color wheel or analogous colors, then the leaves are yellow and green also analogous, but her eyeshadow is bright blue that is contrasting to the orange and the white is just used to highlight the design and create interest. This design took less than 5 minutes with glitter and all, and is a very popular design in metallic purple and neon pink as well. There are TONS of uses for splits, I couldn't live without them now, they have really helped my time, but I have also found that at PPF events in order to make the most money I had to create designs for teens and adults as well as kids. The split cakes have really helped to make this happen. The younger girls (over eight) are choosing my teen board most often and I owe that to the split cakes.

Re: Mind boggling wealth of info!!
You can't get wet if you dont get into the water. So just try it, once I figured out how to use a sponge, my work turned a corner that I'm so glad I did, and I dont want to go backwards, so I too just try to "mush on". I love my split cakes, they really speed up my designs.
Re: Mind boggling wealth of info!!
No, you don't lack imagination! Art is very intimidating. When I taught art I mainly taught it to kids that were not "artists". They had the same attitude. What I told them that really helped was, You would never sit in front of a piano with no training & expect to play Mozart instantly, but for some reason people think, with no training & practice they should be able to do a master piece. Then when they sit down & it doesn't look right, they say they can't draw or paint, etc. It takes time & practice. I believe everyone can do art if they'd just let go & have fun.

This one is going in my "favorite quotes" notebook!!Psalmbook wrote: It takes time & practice. I believe everyone can do art if they'd just let go & have fun.

True quote from Psalmbook - allow the inspiration to flow thru you don't choke it with fear. And remember you don't need to know everything at once, relax and master what you already know and then transfer those principles when you are comfortable.
Re: Mind boggling wealth of info!!
True that! I'm either too optimistic or too dumb to fear much - I just plunge right in with a big YIPPIE and see what happens when it comes to art! I can be a bit like a big sparkly butterfly that just kinda flys around hoping I don't meet a windshield!!
And it will take a loooooong time to read most of the info here....the amount of information here is just amazing! I've been on quite often and I almost feel like I'm still just scratching the surface!
Great to see you and can't wait to see what you've created with your cakes!!

Re: Mind boggling wealth of info!!
I just never really got into doing roses and never found a design with them that I loved.
Splitcakes and Artycakes I use for butterflies, tigers, masks, half face design, snakes, scorpion, dolphin, shark, rainbow with clouds, and small cheek butterflies.
If you go to SillyFarm, almost every artycake has a design idea example.
