Glitter blurs paint
I have a small pot of dry glitter but by the time I get to put on the glitter the paint has dried so it does not stick! The other glitter is in a gel/water base and if I add it on top of a design, it smudges, yuck!
What is the stuff I see painters dipping into with a finger or end of paint brush and dabbing on faces?? Is it wet, dry, is it in a glue? How do you keep from smudging the design? I would like to just dab some glitter on with a finger tip and not use the puffer bottle.

Re: Glitter blurs paint
Some use a teensy bit of vaseline with dry glitter, here and there on the face. Careful application does not smudge the design. However, you can spritz water from a distance and get adherence that way! (CAREFULLY of course!
The stuff that we use at the end of a brush or finger is dry, we put it on BEFORE all the details are completed so that there is some damp paint for the glitter to stick to!

Re: Glitter blurs paint
I use a spray bottle of water, on a fine mist, then glitter. It sticks very well.

Re: Glitter blurs paint
You can roll dry glitter on with the handle of a brush or a finger. It sticks pretty well that way. I usually apply the glitter before the base is dry, or lightly mist with my water and then apply.
Re: Glitter blurs paint
I dip my brush handle in water and then in the glitter... or I poof glitter onto the still-wet base color.
Re: Glitter blurs paint
I like the poof too, and l have also learned after much expense, that I really only need the incandescent color, I just HAD to have EVERY color in a jar at first, but now I know.... The poof can be a little messy if you aren't careful, but you wont smudge your work..and a little goes a long way when it comes to glitter. Just make sure you apply before your painting drys or it wont stick.

Re: Glitter blurs paint
I do the same as Ashley, I poof the glitter onto the still wet paint. If I forget & let the paint dry, I dip the end of my brush(the end I don't paint with) in my water & then into the glitter & roll it across the parts of the design I want glitter on.
Re: Glitter blurs paint
My partner turned me on to this makeup brush that you can fill with shimmer powder. The shimmer powder seems to stick even if the paint is dry. Of course, if the paint is not dry and you smear the brush around it will mess up your design. So I generally just give it one little "pat" and done.
Re: Glitter blurs paint
I love the poofer bottles =). If I forget to apply the glitter before the paint dries, I lightly mist the design with water from my spray bottle... never had any problems with that. If I only want it in a certain spot, I'll dip my finger in water and dab the spots (easier and more precise for me than the end of the brush, but that's a great idea).

Re: Glitter blurs paint
I poof on the base before the line work. I find that it doesn't really look nice on the black or white lines.

Re: Glitter blurs paint
I have the shimmer powder wand & like it except when it picks up wet paint & deposits it where I don't want it. I've also not figured out a good way to clean it/sterilize it between gigs.
Re: Glitter blurs paint
Glitter is not cheap so I was hesitant on using the poof bootle but I guess it's a good alternative if ur base work is already dry...I just need to find a perfect misting bottle mine spritz out way too much water
Re: Glitter blurs paint
does anyone have tips for the snaz gel glitter? I got some free and they are great xmas colours cut seem to smudge the paint too.
Usually I just dab the dry glitter with my finger and that works fine. It sticks even when the base is dry.. not sure of the brand I'll check and post it later but it is really really fine and kind of white/ clear. It is a make up glitter as opposed to a face paint glitter. I tried it with a brush but it clumped so I do the finger dab.

I have never tested this, but I am thinking that the amount of glitter is probably about the same. The poof bottle spreads a dusting of glitter out over a larger area, but so little comes out of the tip with each "poof" that you really don't use much at all. I refill my small poof bottles very seldom, like twice a year maybe, and those are the most popular colors. Some colors I've never had to refill. And I am a poofaholic!
Re: Glitter blurs paint
The shimmer powder wand that I have has a removable cartridge, so you can set the powder aside and clean/dry the brush as you usually would. Not all the wands are like that, but it's a nice feature. I do take care to only give it one shot with the brush though, or else you're right, the paint will smudge.
shimmer wand
What brand and where did you purchase your shimmer wand? I keep moving my glitter from poofer to jar and back again, and am not satisfied with either method!
Re: Glitter blurs paint
I too use the poofer bottles. But, I also use the open glitter pots very often...especially outdoors so that the wind doesn't carry my $$$ away. I just dip my fingers into the glitter and lightly tap it on...now if you just freshy painted you can smear your line work. I just wait a couple of seconds and then dab it on. I use a lot of those 3/$13 glitters from Mamma Clown. You can get in a poofer bottle or the kit size.
Re: Glitter blurs paint
The brush that I use I found in Walmart in the cosmetic section for $6. The picture has the cartridge removed (you can see the remnants of pink powder) and the package that it came in.
Re: Glitter blurs paint
All glitters are not equal - there is a huge range in particle size.
Small fine particles cling to anything & everything, generally the poofer bottles contain finer stuff than the little pots.
Many of the poofer bottles are similar but often have badly made holes - too small/ closed - you can use a hot needle to re-open them.
Re it being cheap; on average I paint 60 faces/ day at my face job....and as ALL the girly faces have a poof at the end, I use glitter continuously. In 3 months over summer with no days off I didn't even use a whole poof-bottle full. one squirt is enough to give a sparkle - you only welly it on if you want to hide a mistake. So its worth it! I don't use the shimmer powders much, maybe for an alternative to a pearly paint base.
Re gels; the ones in pots I have no use for at all. If you can decant it into a Bling/ Glitzer/ Mark Reid fine tipped bottle, do that. Not something I use for kids as it takes a while to dry so is often smudged, or picked off when dry, plus it does get used up fast. But fab for adults.

Re: Glitter blurs paint
Where I paint tends to dry out my work faster. unless the humidity is up, so sometimes I use the poofer bottles just after I paint the base color, but more times I want to apply glitter in only certain areas, for that I just moisten my finger on one of my handy babywipes, take off the top of the poofer bottle and just tip the bottle onto my finger tip, then apply where ever I wish it
Re: Glitter blurs paint
These answers have been very helpful. I bought glitter at SALLY's a hair and nail/makeup supply chain. It is a dry and very fine glitter. I would like a tutorial video on how to apply glitter with a poof bottle. I know this seems like such a silly request but there must be some insider tips!
