ARRGGH I hate Roses...
I have seen several really good tutorials on Roses and I have been practicing and practicing using the double loaded methods but I hate these stupid things and I still can't get it right. The middle part just ends up looking like a big mush of colors. I can make the stroke in the middle look the way its suppose to when its on top of other colors.
Am I just not using enough paint??
I normally love practicing something til i get it but I think this is the exception.
I think when someone says roses now I will be saying "Can I interest u in a hot pink daisy?"
I'd love some tips.

Re: ARRGGH I hate Roses...
I'm having the same problem. If you go to the September newsletter, there is a good rose tutorial there. I have not tried it yet but I hope it works for you.

Re: ARRGGH I hate Roses...
you seriously get requests for roses? only ONCE did I ever have to paint roses and that was only because the person was going to be reading the Robert Munsch book "Look at Me!"
If there's something you don't want to paint because you are not comfortable with it, then have a list or sample pictures and don't deviate from it unless you are comfortable with the request.

Hey Gina love you avatar heeeheheee
Here's a simple step by step hope this helps. I only used red as I painted it on a white background. I would normally double load my brush with white & pink or red.

Re: ARRGGH I hate Roses...
No matter how hard I try I CANNOT do one-stroke roses.
I can draw or paint rose on paper or canvas but just CAN'T do it one-stroke.
If I do it on skin I do it with oil based make-up and paint it properly!

Re: ARRGGH I hate Roses...
Check out Donna Dewberry's books at the library and copy a few of her more updated roses worksheets. Put them in a sheet protector and practice strokes on that - works great ; D
Same colors but a flip of the brush works wonders
The trick of open rose painting is petal seperation. Start with only a bit of white on the base petals then go to a more half & half on inner petals. Note the center was finally half & half, then I added inner petals. Remember, you need more of the darker color on base petals to show off the highlights on the inner row of petals. Make sense?
Hope this helps,
Susan

Re: ARRGGH I hate Roses...
I have had the same problem as you, but every once in a while I will do one that looks right and I can never figure out what I did different. Makes me crazy!!
I have managed to master one that doesn't look too bad and below is a link to the pictorial tutorial that I found the most helpful. It is a little different than the other ones shown because it doesn't have the outer petals laid out in a circle first. I think that is the what made mine look muddy before, maybe I didn't wait for the first layer to dry or something. Anyway, this one helped me:

Good luck!

Re: ARRGGH I hate Roses...
I have DD books... I took Rebecca's ABC classes TWICE and she spent a ton of time helping me one on one... but I still CAN'T do one stroke roses. I've decided that I don't want to, so there!

Re: ARRGGH I hate Roses...
Lol Shannon when someone of your skill level can't do them that makes me feel so much better. But I'm definitely going to practice some of these techniques. I will have a whole room full of captive people tomorrow that I can practice on.

Re: ARRGGH I hate Roses...
It took a lot of practice to do the one stroke rose & sometimes I get it & sometimes I don't. It's a work in progress. I also do a pouncer rose that's real easy.
The oval shaped one I squeezed the sides of the pouncer in.

Re: ARRGGH I hate Roses...
I like the TE rose better than the DD rose, it looks easier (not that any of the sodding things are easy). I like yours as well Psalmbook, yet another reason for me to get a pouncer.
Re: ARRGGH I hate Roses...
I like those Psalm - a very different approach. Thanks for sharing!

Re: ARRGGH I hate Roses...
I had experience doing one stroke roses before I became a FPer. In fact, I painted them on all of my centerpieces at my wedding 7 years ago. Anyway, I did find that the rose split cake made it much easier. Maybe you should try that and see if it's a little easier.
I think the hardest part is the angle to hold the brush on the middle petals. Maybe watching a youtube video over and over would help.

Re: ARRGGH I hate Roses...
You have to push the brush down enough to squeeze the white out of the bristles to create the edge and then swoosh...really...then you will get that separation. If you just "sweep" your brush you'll just sweep up the other color underneath. If you squish and swish you will get that definition.

Re: ARRGGH I hate Roses...
I love the prisma fleur for making my roses, use the white on top of your rose. It works with me Don't make your paint to wet or dry, somewhere in between. I'm still learning but it gets better everytime. Good luck.

Re: ARRGGH I hate Roses...
i was trying to figure out how to explain the brush thing, I think Denice said it, you have to squish down the white edge like she said and swish.
Also want to second what Shannon said, dont offer something you dont want topaint. I havent been painting faces more than a year, my first paying gig, someone asked for a dragon, which I had not painted before, I tried anf failed miserably, nw whenever soemone asks for something I dont feel good about painting, I rfemember the red dragon epic fail, and say, please choose something from my book:)
However once you get the one stroke rose down, all the moms and grandmas will want them
