The flower one really bothers me as I am not seeing it. and feel I am missing something, mabye it's adding something, I don't know basically it feels as though something is off. As opposed to the top one which I just think dosn't work well together.
(I don't get any say in the choice of colour, mabye that is the issue)

I thought I would add one from a job the other day that I posted on facebook - I was flat out at this job, but I thought it gave a good, havana sunset colour array for those interested earlier.

If I may make a suggestion regarding the flower one. I think that the top (above the eyes) is excellent. The antennae look good, linework looks clean, and your dot placement is good.

IMO, the off feeling comes from the bottom half of the design. The lower wing becomes close to the nose and with the addition of the flowers you lost the sharp diagonal line that is popular with most butterflies (and you have more of a sharp angle on the top). This made the design look slightly "boxy".

Try moving the flowers into a diagonal line to make it slant farther away from the nose and life the flowers up higher to give the bottom half of the design a more triangular (rather than square) look.

Alternatively, you can make the butterfly wings end higher up on the cheekbones. I find that a square butterfly looks better if it's smaller.

Does my rambling make sense?

Trying to make sense of it LOL...

I really stuggle with this type always have why I don't normally paint it. I want too, I just find it difficult to get - flow. I definatley think you have a point with the flowers at the bottom loosing that line. I want to do this as its really hard for me the flowery ones but The placement drives me nuts.

I like a slightly smaller butterfly too. once I get the basics of this type I will pull it in, as bad as it sounds I need it bigger to get it to start with (on that note not to good at cheek art - lol ) then once I "get" the structure rules if you know what I mean, then I can pull in. And that bottom right wing dose look like a box now you mention it - hmm why didn't I see that before? sigh

Try placing the flowers withIN the butterfly rather than on the line.

I've seen some awesome Marcela Murad ones that use that technique....lemme search my inspiration file...

I think... I get it. time will tell, and will have a look at Marcella. I have been meaning too just trying not to copy so kind of want to but didn't want to look. I might have to with this to start with as it is doing my head in. I try then give up for a few months - have been doing that for about a year and a half e.g. try, then give up, try, give up

I have not done many new ones lately.I've been having fun with cat designs instead. and a few other things.

But I did this in star blends and was happy as it was my second attempt with star blends ever. (As My first attempt with them, was so so bad I packed them away for a year) It was taken on a camera phone so not the best picture

I always have a hard time with butterflies myself!! Sometimes I think I'm doing a really bad job and they end up just loving it no matter how much I mess up!! Just add a jewel to anything and it really makes the face!!!
