My very first Avatar Attempt...
Okay, so as many of you probably know, the movie avatar has been re-released in theaters with bonus scenes. So, at the festival I painted at this last weekend, I had some people ask me if I could do an avatar. And, not being one to back down from a challenge, I say "I've been itching to do one forever! But since it's my first try, I'll give you a discount." And since I've been oogling at all of the wonderful avatars posted on this forum, I thought I'd give it a try! I had nothing to look at, but having seen the movie several times, I thought I could do it okay. And here is what I came up with! I ended up painting 8 of them the entire festival, but due to lines at the times, these were the only decent pics I got! Lemme know what you think! I'd love to be able to improve this design to add it to my board!

You did a great job!! Thanks for posting some pictures. I bet that you had a blast!!
Re: My very first Avatar Attempt...
I did have a blast painting these! Then of course, Avatar is currently my favorite movie, lol. I used D F/X Light Blue, Dark Blue, and white with a medium filbert brush, a large sponge, and a #2 round for the dots and eye liner. The blending out of the lines was the hardest part, since in the film the Na'vi didn't have really harsh lines.

Phew! I thought it was just me thinking blending out the lines was difficult. lol Mine didn't blend very well but maybe with practice...
Re: My very first Avatar Attempt...
Haha, yeah, it's not as easy as blending out Mehron, but it can be done, I mean, The Wolfe Brothers do it! You just have to work quickly and have a sponge ready. What I did was I would paint a line with relatively dry paint and then have a sponge with a shade of blue in between the base and the stripes ready to beat and blend out the harsh lines; I would literally have brush in one hand and sponge in the other. I had to do it that way because it was 97 degrees out with a breeze... so in some cases, the paint would dry on the brush it was drying so fast.

Re: My very first Avatar Attempt...
Thanks everyone! I really was happy with how the Na'vi tuened out, and the eye design is inspired by an arm design I saw somewhere and stuck in my "ideas" folder. I can't remember where I saw it, but I have an inkling to say it was on here, but can't remember who the inspiring artist is. I was really just struck by the whole round-ended swirls instead of the classic fade into a fine point swirl I always use. It's a wonderful design element!
