Facepaint Pens, Tattoo Markers?
Hello! I was wondering if anyone has used tattoo markers to make the outline of their design first and then colored it in with facepaint? I'm wondering if this would be a faster, fool proof way to facepaint. (I'm new to all this )
Also, is there such a thing as facepaint pens? I have seen the Detailz paint that looks like liquid eyeliner, but that's about it. Thanks!

Re: Facepaint Pens, Tattoo Markers?
Ben Nye makes a creme pencil, I got it to try it out, but never used it. I use my paintbrush to layout a design in white if it's a complicated one.
I have seen a facepaint supplier sell tattoo pens, can't remember who. What might be cool is that transfer paper I see them use on those tattoo shows. That might make things so much faster... Draw out something first, then transfer it onto the model, might cut down some time on a 5 hour painting.

For most face painting you lay down the background color & then do the line work. I don't think a pencil would give the right technique. Like JBax said, it would be nice for a more complex design or large scale design like body painting.
The pencils are sold by Amerikan Body Art(I got one at FABAIC for if I do any complex henna designs).

i've been thinking about the transfer paper for larger things like bellys and backs. it would make my life much easier. I draw everything out with white paint and an #1 round before painting detailed things.

I've done lots of work using liner pencils - lip and eye liners, which are just cream make-up in stick form.
My dragon was done completely with liner pencils http://www.shannonfennell.com/panowingdrag.jpg
the cream make-up is easier for blending when you are working for a longer period of time as it doesn't dry until you set it with powder.
I do not use them for face painting when working. They are regular make-up and require setting with powder to "dry" them and they take more effort to remove.
I have done some work for photography or competition with them though. The bat in this body painting is done with liner pencils, the rest in Fardel creams. http://www.shannonfennell.com/USBPF1.jpg
Generally to be faster at face painting adding a step really won't help.
When body painting I will use white liner pencils to sketch out the design for placement etc. and have done detailed areas with the pencils too.
Just cheap eye/lip liner pencils are fine... although I do like working with MAC and other brands for the colour selection and creaminess of the make-up which makes it easier to blend. The cheap ones are too dry to blend well but are good for drawing outlines.
There are tattoo ink pens - Tsusinkenko? Or something like that. But they aren't for use on the face. They are alcohol based.
Details is useless IMO. and you can't really draw with it anyway.
And any purported "facepaint pens" are usually crappy craft type things that stink and look horrible.

I make transfers for corporate logos - jobs that want the liquor logos on the girls are so much easier when you make a transfer of the logo! And then just fill it in!
I just flipped the logos in Photoshop, printed, and traced onto parchment paper in tattoo inks... then rubbed the skin with an alcohol prep pad, rubbed the transfer onto the skin et voila! perfect logo outline to fill in and paint!

It is really imporant for the logos to be properly proportioned and laid out.

Re: Facepaint Pens, Tattoo Markers?
I have pencils by Mehron, I have a thick white and thick black, although you can get them in most primary colours and you can get thin ones which would be much better for face painting. I use my fat ones to mark out body painting, but they aren't good for lining, only marking out.
They wash off just as easy as the face paint - I would like to try the thin pencils but can't afford to be experimenting with products I don't 'need' right now.
If you want to have a look I'll fish out a link for you.

You can also use these pencils for transfers instead of the tattoo paper. These are much cheaper and work without the machine that is needed for the paper.

You can use the paper without the machine but you'd still have to trace your design.
Another alternative is this ink. If you have a dedicated printer you can use this as a refill for a cartridge. Print ready made stencils.
