Information on Sponges Empty Heat cut my own

Post by Fun Frog Wed May 18, 2011 3:28 am

I have a sponge and rubber specialty store not far from home which sells the off cuts of different thickness and density for AU$10 a bag which is so big it just fits in the back of my station wagon. Very Happy Have cut heaps into varioius shapes using a hot wire. Beware that you need to do this outside or as I do,turn the evap air con full blast with only one window open causing my house to turn into a huge air draft cabinet (the fumes are BAD NEWS).
Mostly find wedges are my fav. Heaps of different size for the 'little ones' faces. I wash them a laundry bag with baby soap so if any trace remains after the final rinse there are no tears if they get in eyes. Sad

I don't know how to use a "hot wire", or even what that really means. Are there any other suggestions for how to cut them? I used a scissors, and a bread knife, but neither leave nice, straight edges. Please help! I bought more round ones, but need to cut them to use them. Thanks!

Apparently if you wet them or freeze them before cutting it is easier.

Personally, I take the round ones and hold them in one hand, holding to they stay taut, then using larger sheers cut through them in one cut... I have nice straight edges all the time.

Use large enough scissors that you can actually make the cut in one go...and hold them straight.

You could use a paper cutter. The kind where you pull down the knife to cut.
It works very well and leaves a nice straight edge.

I cut my sponges with an electric carving knife.

I recently put some score lines in a sponge, and put all my lollipop smoothies into the slit. The sponge keeps them from falling out if they get jostled onto their side inside my FatMax. It displays them beautifully fanned out whilst painting, so I can easily grab one at a time.

Dear Kwekwe:
Welcome to the Forum!
I have used those small egg shaped applicators for face paint (they are okay, not as good as the high-density sponges), for StarBlends (really good!), and for glitter (wastes a lot of glitter, and it works).
Experiment and see what works best for you. I have not tried the egg shaped applicators on glycerin-based face paint (Paradise, FAB, Superstar). I have only tried it on wax-based face paint (Global, TAG, Cameleon).
Mosey on over to the "Introductions" thread and introduce yourself to a warm, kind community of face painters!
Happy Painting!
