Re: on line training
youtube videos are free, plentiful and fun, start by searching basic strokes then look for specific faces to practice. Sorry,I don't know about Philadelphia's course. Welcome to the forum, there are tons of old threads here with great ideas, and new ones all the time.
Re: on line training
a good place to start is probably with the videos on www.sillyfarm.com ... most are fairly simple designs, but good designs. The most important things to work on as a beginner are sponging a consistent base, making lines that go thin to thick to thin, and making tear drops. Other than that, just look at a lot of designs and figure out what you like.
Re: on line training
i started a year ago from nothing and you tube taught me all i needed to know. well, that plus these fine people here.
Re: on line training
I ordered the online book, and regretted it, and asked for a refund, and as promised, she gave it. When I had ordered it, I had already been painting for a bit and had the basic knowledge, so I didn't learn anything from the written parts. The designs didn't impress me, especially when compared to what's in the challenges here every month.
I learned all of the basics from youtube, then was able to refine my skills by meeting the fine artists here. Now I'm able to move on to some actual classes to get more individual technique help.
My advise is the same as the others. Get all you can out of what is out there for free. This way you can know what you are looking for in training when you are ready to spend your hard-earned painting dollars.

Re: on line training
I've been thinking of taking some art classes on painting & seeing if any of the techniques would cross over.
Re: on line training
Art classes would help in every way I'm sure! I went to art school in college and it will totally cross over. I always tell people, it's just a new medium/canvas painting on people. More interactive and a little bit spiritual especially when painting expectant mom's bellies. Art classes will teach about light sources, perspective, shading, etc. Go for it
Re: on line training
I think what I need is something to help me w/ originality. I can copy from the best & w/ time my face painting has improved, but I don't feel very original. I'm trying to find that push to get me to the next level....
I used to look at tons of face painting designs & while I still love to do it, I'm more inclined to look at things in nature & think... how can I transfer that to a face? Sorry, I'm rambling... but it's my new dilemma since FABAIC.

Re: on line training
I find I am spending more time in my sketch pad developing new stuff. I am in just a little over 2 years now. I am also finding the henna crossing over into my painting. When you master the basics you are free to create interesting stuff on the spot. But like anything else your passion will propel you.
to answer your question - I thought about her books but never bought them probably a moot point at this point.

Re: on line training
I bought the online line book and was disappointed, as there wasn't anything in there that I hadn't found for free someplace else or in another resource that I purchased somewhere else. She did give me a refund... no questions asked.

yeah, that
Re: on line training
I bought her books and regretted it as well, but i didnt realize i could ask for a refund cause they are E-books, so who's to say I would delete them? Anyways it's almost 2 years now, so no way she would refund them now *#(^&$@ Thats money that could have been spent on FPFS

Re: on line training
jackson,
pros-everything, cons-nothing. maybe blog about your journey into face painting. something that you can write from experience while you are learning, rather than posting others experience. would be more fullfilling for you and others i would think.
others,
i too would like to figure out the science with face painting as in 'how does this transfer to a face'. i know accents are better in threes or fives, but other than that, i just plunk the stuff on and hope it sits well. there has got to be a way of looking at something and a formula for how this transfers to the face. it may be 'artistic talent' that i am lacking, but really seeking this. now i just need the time to find it. lol

Re: on line training
Yes! I thing you are absolutely right it has pros-everything, cons-nothing.
Can you tell me something about its history because I want to start my blog with its introduction.
Thanks for answering.

Re: on line training
Jackson--I think that if you're going to be blogging about face painting, you should do the research yourself. Just re-posting others' posts isn't too original. It might help if you started painting, too. It's hard to write intelligently about something you've never done or experienced before.

Re: on line training
Jackson,
I know this may sound a bit snooty(and I don't mean it to be), but why would one want to blog about something they have no experience in? I guess I just don't understand that. That is like me want to blog about auto mechanics. AND....Contra is right, it is best that you do all the research yourself as just reposting all of our research really isn't appropriate.
Two of our members Blog, Michele Heffner and Shannon F., which is based on their own work and experience. Which IMO is the whole point of blogging right?
In a nutshell, must of us are working moms, running our own businesses to make a living. This is a huge endevour for must of us. We aren't going to do the work for you.

Re: on line training
I think if you want to start a blog about face painting. make it about your face painting journey from beginner....what brought you into this path? What supplies do you buy. What do you like/dislike in materials. First gig unpaid...volunteering. The experiences and feelings you get at those events.
Your first paid gig. What type of advertising you have choosen. Etc.

Re: on line training
Digging up the history and cultural use of face and body art is fascinating. Last semester I went in to give a presentation and demo to a fine art grade 12 class. It had to have historical relevance and cultural significance. I had done research on it before and have read a lot but it was fun to do a refresher so I could share it. There is a ton of info, have fun!
