? about cutting professional dish to make cakes???
I want to start making my own arty cakes and rainbow cakes but I can not afford to buy seperate colors to cut up!! I was wondering has anyone ever cut a chunk of their professional dish to make arty cakes, and still use the professional dish like normal with the big chunk of paint missing? Or do you not recomend doing this? Does this even make sense? lol
Re: ? about cutting professional dish to make cakes???
Why not? Eventually you are going to wear down one area in a cake anyway. I say cut away, as they won't stay nice and neat forever anyway.
Just be forewarned. Making splits is very labor intensive especially if you want it neat. Make sure to wash your hands, work area and tools often to not muddle the colors. Go slowly, doing one at a time to avoid frustration.
Many cakes are easier to slice when frozen. Get a good exacto knife and some square razor blades. Good luck!

I do all the time... so what if there is a chunk missing??? Make no difference to the make-up's performance.

Thanks all, i will give it a try, I know it was prob. a stupid question but I did not want to mess up my supplies. I guess I am just a neat freak and needed permission, lol!!

I have chunks out of lots of my pots. A cheap way to practice is to buy one of those $15 snaz palettes with 8 -2 ml paints. I made a little split palette with one just for fun. I'll post the pic soon.

I have a set into my kit, and another I take hunks out of.
But, I like my cakes to all look clean and level. Once a week I take them out of my kit and wash them off under the faucet. I take a knief, and press the sides down so they are flat. Sometimes I need to use the knief and chop the cake up a bit, so I can reshape it. Then, using an antibaterial wipe that is safe for the skin I press it all level again.
Just my preference

I moved all my cakes to a bead container. I have 2 rows of it that are splits & the rest are my favorite colors. I was all about consolidating space. It was hard cutting into the paints at 1st, but I got over it. I have 2 snaz mini kits that I've also turned into splits.
So, we give you permission to cut away

Depending on the brand of make-up you are using, you should be able to mash the cake down to flatten/smooth it back out after you cut out the chunk you need. Or, if you cut the chunk out of the side, it will leave you a "well" for working the makeup into the right consistency for line work. I actually prefer having a hollow spot in the containers of the colors I use for line work, as it allows you to accumulate a pool of liquid makeup in the "well" as you work and speeds up your line work quite a bit.

I did the same thing. I had two small snaz pallets. I made split cakes out of them. This gave me a chance to practice using splits and also gave me an idea of what color combinations I like the most before I go out and buy/ or make some more.
