Post by CreateFaces Sat May 08, 2010 10:00 am

So, it's pouring rain here in Mass and I figure it's the perfect day for practicing on my daughter (just got some new paint from Metina that I want to try out.) My problem? How to keep her for more than 2 designs Very Happy

I think I'm going to use bribery today. She loves to read, so I think I'm going to tell her that if she lets me complete 3 designs without complaint we can go to the bookstore and she can buy 1 book, 5 designs...2 books.

I figure this is an okay method because I don't mind buying the books and she's a sucker for going to the bookstore.

I just will explain that this is a book deal only...it's not going to change to ice cream or anything else the next time.

Wish me luck...

You know, I've thought about resorting to bribery with my son. He doesn't want to let me paint him anymore. I say it's worth it in some instances.

How old is he? My daughter is 7.

My son is 17 and he's a good sport because he is a face painter too and I let him practice on my arms (my face can't handle it, after one wash I break out.)

As an update, my daughter is a good negotiator, she got me to agree to 4 faces for a tub of modeling clay.
I'm okay with this if it isn't something bad for her or too expensive. I feel like we both won cheers

My daughter is only 7 months old and I can imagine this same bribing thing happening when she is older. She is already the queen of the house. haha

My son is five. I got him his own paints, so every time I ask if I can paint him, he counters with "I want to paint you, Mom."

I think this is good.. and technically it's not bribery, it's reward. In bribery, the book comes before the painting. And the reward is something that's good for your kid, so rock on with the stellar parenting!!!!

Here was a recent conversation with my 7 year old.

Me: Hey, Kira. Can I paint you?

Kira: No

Me: I'll give you a dollar.

(silence while she thinks it over)

Kira: Make it two.

I've resorted to having my daughters invite friends over for playdates. We do that anyway, but now I make sure it includes face painting at some point. I have a 5 year old and 7 year old. My 7 year old prefers to do the painting on her dad or mannequin. If her friends get painted she sometimes gets talked into getting it too, but the 5 year old will have none of it unless its super quick. Sigh.

Yeah, my first practice session was when my then 16 year old invited about 10 friends over to be painted and I let them choose whatever they wanted.

It took me hours and I was really happy to get in the experience. I never thought to have my little one do that, but I think I will.

BTW - I tried my first tiger ever at the beginning of April and I have so much respect for everyone who does them so good. Mine was a disaster.

I tried my second one today, figured I'd share. It's better, but still has a ways to go. I realize the stripes on her cheeks should be shorter and not so close to the snout.

Here's my disaster of a first try:

Here's my second try today:

I realize now that the stripes should be more angled towards the eyes and shorter in length:

This is the first full-face design I let my son paint on me. It's his version of an angel from Snazaroo's little booklet that comes in the kits from Michael's. He really got into it. Enjoy Psalmbook!

Createfaces: Great tigers! I love the 2nd one! Once you've done tons of them you'll get your groove. My avatar one took me 30-45 minutes, but I was being inspired by another artist.

contrachapado: Love your son's painting! My daughter is 17 & has been face painting since she was 12. My son will only draw... no color & it must be a star wars or dragon/viking battle(sometimes combined). He's almost 9.

Was is Becky from youtube? You did a fantastic job and that is the artist it reminds me of because of the mix with the spots and stripes.

Have you thought about getting some audio books and saying to her that for as long as she lets you paint is as long as she gets to listen - that way you are both getting something at the same time out of it and she wont have to keep asking "are you finished". May / may not help?????

Hmmm...good idea. Not sure how she will take to it, but I could ask. She's like me, extrememly visual and highly values her book collection. On the other hand she also loves music, so she may go for audio books too!
Thanks for the idea!

AUDIO BOOKS?!?! Gasp oh the horror! We just finished building the library in our house. 15 book shelves wrapping around the entire room. I stand in there and just visit my books.......

My main practice model is 30, so not too much bribary there. And the neighbor kids love getting painted here and there.

I hear about so many bribing their kids to paint them.
My sons are grown and I so wish I got into face painting when they were small so I could reward them with the face of their choice or a 'new' face. As teens they would probally clean their room for the latest tribals or cool dragons like Pashur's so they could show it off to all their friends.

Oh! That sounds like a win win.

My son is 18 so no luck there, however, I do practice on the neighbourhood kids once in a blue moon. Drives my husband mad having about 6 kids in the kitchen when he's working upstairs though Embarassed
