My Magnetic Setup - Page 2 Empty Re: My Magnetic Setup

Post by Lady Jayde Thu Mar 31, 2011 11:30 am

I've had more problems with parents (moms) attempting to pick up my paints (no doubt to discern the name brands and to determine whether or not they can find a place to buy it). I've caught many surprised faces when they try to pick up a paint pot without my knowledge only to find that it's seemingly fastened to the container! The sheepish look is priceless! I love the "oh! I didn't know they were "glued" down!" to which I answer "yes, it's a safety measure since my paint likes to grow legs and walk away"!

It's also a deterent at conventions where things have been know to vanish without a trace. Though it kind of miffed me to see that there were STILL some at convention who felt they had a right to pick up someone else's paints without permission...even if it were to examine the magnet on the bottom of it.

I work from time to time at these community church event things, they are meant to bring the people from lower income areas together in a trusting way. I haven't personally had anything stolen, but my partner has had some paints and glitter walk away, I think it has more to do with the large amounts of unsupervised kids at these events, especially the really little ones that probably don't know better than to grab something pretty.

I am def gonna try a set up like Lady Jades. Mine are magnetized but not really good like that, I can see the theft detterant in that

I just recently gave up on the magnetic primer thing! I painted the bottom of one of my boxes with 4 coats of it and it is just not strong enough. It would be good for a wall, hanging up paper with a magnet, but not for holding paint pots even with a strong magnet. Sad I just gave up and went to velcro because my boxes aren't flat on the bottom so they wouldn't fit a flat piece of metal.

I dug out an old roll of 8" wide galvanized flashing. It's pretty easy to cut - lighter weight than the sheet metal in my hardware store - I used to make cookie cutters out of it. Perfect width for my Fatmax...now to find the containers...

Just an FYI... I even used magnets to hold the metal sheet to my box. I epoxied magnets to the bottom of the case and the sheet just "snaps in" and doesn't have a chance at moving! I figured that would give me the freedom to remove the sheet when I need to wash the black cloth that covers it.

Thanks for all of the positives about my magnet fetish... I'm nothing if not an overachiever! Very Happy

LJ - where did you get the metal sheets for the bottom? I want to do something similar, and I like that the metal/magnets A) look better and B ) seem easier to clean than using velcro. Rona just looked at me funny when I waltzed up and asked if they had paper-sized metal sheets...haha.

I'd rather buy the proper size if possible, instead of buying a huge sheet and having to find the time to cut it down etc...or else I might see if I can buy some baking trays small enough Very Happy

Post by Lady Jayde Mon Dec 05, 2011 2:11 pm

Hey Kristal!
I initially bought a smaller sheet of metal from the home store (I had to borrow a magnet mounted flashlight from the Tool department to make sure that I didn't accidentally buy aluminum which magnets don't stick to...so bring your own magnets is you go this route) Embarassed Later on I found some 12x12 sheets of steel in the craft section of the Pat Catan's near me. The sheets were intended to make modular display boards but they were 12 x 12 which meant a lot less cutting for me.

I don't see how you can get precut sheets since the metal isn't generally intended for the purposes we want them for. I took my husband's tin snips and cut it down for a good fit and then filed the edges (it's sharp stuff!). If you don't have a Pat Catan's I'd be happy to go and grab some for you and send it up to you...I think it was like $3 or $4 per sheet. Let me know!

LJ, you're a rockstar! I'm going to try a couple more places (no Pay Catan's here, and Michael's had magnetic adhesive sheets that didn't even stick to each other through the packaging...haha.), but I may take you up on that!! I'll let you know soon...TIA!!

And I had totally gone around with a full 32gr pot of paint, with magnets (fairly strong) taped to the pack, attempting to see what was metal Razz

You know that Michael's baking section is 95% aluminum, and I have no use for $30 metal muffin trays...I must have looked insane 'testing' all the trays with magnets Razz Plus my face was painted and I was wearing my work skirt with printed stockings on it.

So I found www.magnet4less.com (they're not on eBay anymore) - insane to see how many kinds and strengths! Thinking that a 1/2" X 1/8" with a 6.6lb pull will be strong enough...Razz

Oh, just had a thought.

Have you ever (LJ or anyone else with a magnetic setup) gone through airport security with your kit? I'm going to the Vegas convention...last time I had to make a mini kit and ship it over ahead of time, since I had more than the allotted "liquids" in one palette. This new setup, I figure, would nix the mini kit need, since each pot is an individual container in itself.

But...I'm not sure about super strong magnets going through security. Thoughts? Stories?

As a matter of fact I did! Just last year! I carried one of my boxes in my backpack. Security scanned it and asked what it was, but didn't even bother looking inside. I told them it was makeup and I guess they believed me after noting the 4 or 5 issues of Illusions Magazine that I had in the bag with it. I researched and called TSA so many times to be sure (I'm sure I'm on their DO NOT CALL list), but there is no precedent set for blocking cake form makeup or limiting the quantities. So GOFERIT! Thanks for the heads up about Magnets4Less... I need more...I'm working on another project... Evil or Very Mad

This isn't a "Kit" per say. It's just a way of storing your paints. I suppose if you got a case that was deep enough to house the cakes, you'd be fine. A quick headsup though, If your 90gm cake comes with a recessed bottom (like the DFX and Wolfe brands) You'll have to screw in the removeable base so that you have something to put the magnet on. The Nio. magnets are strong, but not strong enough to hold your paints down without actually making contact with the metal. I sincerely reccomend checking the bases of your paints before ordering magnets. The magnets are available in different sized and thicknesses and you'll want to order the appropriate thickness for your paints. For example: I use a thicker 3/16" magnet for my Paradise because there's a slight recess, but for my TAG I can use the thin, 1/8" magnets.

Awesome! I plan on calling, myself, but that's great to know. And yes, I should probably stick some copies of Illusion in my bag when I go.

I found sheet metal! Cookie trays at the dollar store (conveniently right beside the magnets) that are pretty much the right size (so just have to get rid of the sides) and were $1.50 each -$6 win! They also had epoxy for $1.25.

And I'm not sure how much you got your magnets for, originally, but I found a couple of sellers on eBay that seemed reasonable - got 50 (6mmX1.5mm) for $5, and 50 (3/8'X1/8') for $15 - both free shipping. I can look up the sellers if you want?

My magnets are still en route - this will be my winter project Very Happy
