Face Painting at event where there are other painters

I do not like face painting at events when other face painters are there because it discourages me. Then I try to figure out what do I charge. For instance I have a event this sunday and it is going to be two others there. Should I charge a flat rate and what should the rate be? Right now at festival events I only have been charging 5.00 for any design but i think i should be charging a little more because I am getting better

You’ll have to try and stay in the same range as the others in your area. I usually charge $8 for half/face & mask designs (most popular) - $10. for Full face with bling and $6. for simple things like a one eye design or ball with flames.

I also usually offer a “surprise me” option for $5.

Really the event shouldn't be doing that.... they are just trying to fill spots and make money with no regard to the vendors.

Pray for a good location, then don't paint anything for less in $5 or else you will clog your line with the 'buck or two' crowd. Clogging the line means that that one person who would have paid you $10 for ONE design is now discouraged by your long line (filled with cheapos) and they walk away. Meanwhile you are stuck painting 5 times the people for the same dollar amount.

Don't dip below $5 even for small stuff. Full faces simple stuff starts at $5 and goes up from there to $20 - $25

Have colorful boards, clean setup, and clear signage.

I'm painting at an event on the 20th of June where there will likely be FREE face painting being offered.... HO-FREAK'N-RRAY!  We'll see how that works out... -_-

I have painted every summer at a street festival where free face painting is offered. The free face painters are in the heart of the Children's Zone. I am at the very end of the street, behind the last bouncy castle. (By the way, last year, I watched the children as they came out the 'Caterpillar' bouncy slide. I could not see the ascend the ride... I certainly watched as they came out of the Caterpillar's butt! Wait! Don't read that... I sound so juvenile!)
I had a line up from 10am until 5pm. The street performers paid to have their faces painted by me and fellow team member Ella. There are some parents who value amazing one of a kind art... and some value free. I got the best customers!
