The Makeup Muse Tribal Workbook
Review – The Makeup Muse Tribal Workbook : Beginner and Intermediate Designs
by Melanie Siedsma
This is a picture of my first try at one of the designs in the Workbook.
Price – $15.00
Description -
First Impressions - This was one of my first purchases as a beginner face painter. I was way intimidated and in hindsight this was a bit of a silly book for me to have purchased as one of my very first endeavors.
Overall Impressions – Now I use this workbook as an excellent source of tribal patterns. The designs flow nicely and are mostly intuitive.
Pros -
• Fairly easy to follow Step by Steps
• Great tribal designs for the face that you probably haven’t seen before
• Excellent practice sheet included with mini practice designs on one
side (I used my Paradise black on the sheet and it worked out fine)
• Cheap!
Cons -
• Cheap and therefore not super durable
• Hand/Arm designs did not have step by steps
Recommended – Yes! If you are past the initial “learning to paint” trial period, then this one is so worth it. You must know how to do Swirls and Curls already.
Suggestions – Please Please Please do more of these Melanie! I would love to learn how to take regular cheek art pictures (skulls, spiders etc.) and transform them into tribal pieces. Also,
please make a DVD, or a YouTube video or something. Tribal is awesome and in demand.

Re: The Makeup Muse Tribal Workbook
So cool you mention this... I have a desire to cover legs in tribal.... better to show after completion than to explain. But I lack tribal prowess. (sp?)
Will have to look into... Thanks!

Hi Metina,
These are available at SillyFarm. They are in the Book section near the bottom of the page.
I didn't link b/c I wasn't sure about that on the forums.
Thanks!

That is strange! I know they are not showing as Out of Stock but if you are still interested a quick email to Heather might be a good idea.

Re: The Makeup Muse Tribal Workbook
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book, I totally suck at Tribals and I bought it over a year ago, and like Michelle, was way too intimidated to do past the first design.
BUT..... pulled it out after going to the convention in CT, because some of the people there could just do such great tribals seemingly out of no where.
& I wanted to be able to do that too!!
It rocks! I'd buy a second "Melanie" tribal book in a heart beat!
BTW....Beautiful Tribal painting Michelle!!!

Guess they got it again. But the shipping is so expensive. I tried to ask if they could bring a copy to Seeboden last year, but got no reply. Is it only available at Sillyfarm?

I think so- I tried searching for it on Google and nothing but SillyFarm came up.

Re: The Makeup Muse Tribal Workbook
I tried to look her up to see if there is a way to buy the books wholesale and had no luck. Anyone find her, let me know.

Re: The Makeup Muse Tribal Workbook
Good idea Metina. I need some good tips for tribal -I booked a big Purim party this Sunday with an African Tribal theme and of course now I have to learn tribal. ( I always do this to my self!) I was planning on going to the NY guild meeting this week where tribal is on the agenda so the timing was great unless we get hit with SNOW. Does anyone one have a quick down and dirty tribal to share?
Re: The Makeup Muse Tribal Workbook
Our good buddy, Sparkling Faces, has a youtube vid on one, I attemped and linked in my gallery...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoWEF0yHhQg
I'd google image African Tribal, see if/how they differ from generic tribal.

Re: The Makeup Muse Tribal Workbook
I just received my book and just flipping through it I'm already in love! I too struggle, no wait thats too nice, SUCK at tribal painting off the top of my head, so This is perfect for me to practice. I can do tribalish stuff by copying/looking at an image, but I know if I practice ALOT till i memorize stuff I'll be able to provide more stuff for the men.
Re: The Makeup Muse Tribal Workbook
This book was out of print - still there are copies around as some have found.
Melanie was the Director for Enjoy Your Face - which helped grow painters like April Powell, Stephanie Dalvit, Kurt Drake, Brian Wolfe and Nick Wolfe.
Melanie was unhapppy at printing time - my understanding is she wanted to perfect the book a bit more before print but that was and is out of her control. She likes to lay low now. The last time I saw her about 2 yrs back - well unlikely she wants to be involve in updating this book or reprinting. At that time she was still airbrushing and doing body art.

Re: The Makeup Muse Tribal Workbook
I just bought this book on the 3rd of sept and its in stock at sillyfarm We are our own worst critic but if I ever get the chance to meet her I would thank her soooo much for this help!
Re: The Makeup Muse Tribal Workbook
I was lucky enough to get this book on Ebay, included in an auction I won for several face painting books, paints, and mica powders several years back.
I was so intimidated by it, I put it away.
But thanks to this thread, I am revisiting the tribal book. Now that I have the basics of face painting down, it doesn't seem so intimidating to me. The instructions look like they will be easy to follow.
