since almost everyone starts out with snazaroo, and some of you use it pretty exclusively, i thought it would be a good challenge to see if an all-snaz design can look good.

please jump in and add your designs!

first try - quick dino eye - snazaroo blue, sparkle turquoise, electric gold, white, and electric black (i mostly have sparkle & electric colors)

2nd - simple butterfly eye - snazaroo sparkle red, sparkle orange, sparkle white, electric black

bluebird, rainbow & cloud - pink (snaz sparkle red & sparkle white), light orange (sparkle orange with electric gold over), sparkle turquoise, purple (sparkle red, blue, & sparkle white mixed)

simple leopard eye - the fine black linework around the spots was harder to do with snaz - snazaroo sparkle white, sparkle turquoise, purple (sparkle red, blue, & sparkle white mixed), electric black

somewhat better results with larger spots -

Of course all snaz looks good. Shannon Fennell is probably going to give you a verbal butt-kicking later.

The problem I have with all snaz is it doesn't stay looking good for very long. I find that snaz fades pretty quickly. Maybe we can get some tips on making it last longer?

No butt kicking.

And I agree with you that Snaz does tend to "fade" - what is happening is that as it dries it reverts to a powder and the dry powder falls off thus leaving a pale layer of pigment on the skin.  This is because Snazaroo has less emollients/moisturizers than other brands - like, say, Kryolan or Grimas, which are water activated make-up being used as face paint.  Snaz was made specifically as face paint so they didn't bother making it to make-up standards for length of wear for theatrical use, etc. IMO.

However, not all of the Snaz colours dry up like this.  The Snaz Electric and Sparkle colours hold up very well as does Bright Red.

I will use the Sparkle Snaz as a base and if I need more depth I'll mix in some of the standard colours.  Like Sparkle Yellow with Yellow Ochre.  But most of the Sparkle Snaz are pretty bright - Orange, Pink, Lilac, Red, Yellow, etc.  Electric Blue is an awesome colour for many things.

Also Snaz:

I did the body painting for the T-Rex with Snaz - because it is what I had on hand in the dark green.  It held up ALL day - with hairspray as a sealer.  I did some touch-ups on the crease points (elbows, etc.) and then sprayed again.  It was for a show and I was able to make repairs between performances but I was surprised at how well it held up overall!

thanks, shannon.  great dino guy.

i find you usually have to go over it with a second layer of color to boost it, especially with white. the cloud above was multiple layers of white, and then it began to crack. just two layers is better.

I've actually never used Snazaroo before... I have a cheap palette from Michael's I should check out sometime.

linework with snazaroo black and white -
both snaz black and white do better on bare skin than over a snaz base,
so one option is linework and details mostly around or in between the elements.

(same snazaroo sparkle and electric colors as above, plus sparkle light green)

littlemonsters, your snazaroo pallete could be useful for practicing designs as you refine them, and some of the colors hold their own pretty well.

plus, they are known to wash off well, so good for little tykes.

This inspired me to make a blog post about my thoughts on the brand, and my experiences with it.

4 Reasons Why I Don't Use Snazaroo

Thanks for the inspiration jlirie! *hugs*

-Disclaimer- just my personal opinion, this isn't against anyone who uses the brand.

forest-fairy, interesting you mention the snazaroo website and the face painting images there. it's part of what motivated me to try making better designs with snazaroo.

i happened to visit the snazaroo website and browse through some images recently. i hadn't been there in a long time. most of them are so bad, they're embarassing. however, i realized most of the time it was because of the technique, not the paint itself.  lots of boring bases in one color with sloppy linework and details.

i agree snazaroo will never be wolfe, tag, or dfx, but it can certainly be handled better than what is represented on their website.

oh yeah totally.

The only reason I used those photos is I knew that they were 100% made using the product. I tried to pick out the best looking designs for the colors I wanted to compare in my blog post. :/

It was just about comparing the colors, not what you make with them.
