what brushes????

What are your favorite brushes???? Or shal I say what are your essential brushes in your kit? also what brands are your favorite??? thanks

Kolinsky #4 round the ones Metina sells here -LOVE them can't
have enough I think I order one everytime I order paint.

I like Loew Cornell golden taklon brushes...fav size/shape is a #3 or #4 round

Lowe Cornell 795 series 3, 4, 5 all good. And for tribals and the way it flows and weighted to sit perfect in my hand the blue Robert Simmons #6!

#8 round sables and a thin eyeliner brush will keep me happy =)

My brushes are mostly Loew Cornell American Painter with a smattering of Utrecht (my 1 in, 3/4in, and 1/2in, and #4 round), some #3 rounds (which I use all the time) and #2 flats that came with my Diamond FX palettes, and Paradise (wide chisel brushes).

I'm partial to the Winsor Newton Artist's Water Colour series sables. Particularly the 2,3,4, and 6 rounds and pointed rounds & the rigger/liner brushes. My second favorite is the American Painter brushes, particularly the script liner, 2,3, and 4 round.

I'm kinda a generic girl. I have no idea what I use. I like gold or white taklon... usually prefer white to gold. Gold seems softer to me. I go to a local discount supplier store (you have to be a member, but personal memberships are free... so is the membership to make you feel exclusive?) and play with what they have. You know... swoosh around dry on your arm to get a sense of what it's like. I'm kinda hard on my brushes (I do know better) so I'm not ready to invest big bucks yet. Most of the time they do okay. I think I have a set of Royal that are my fav (don't really know if that's what they are) I keep aside for fancier jobs than festival work.

I love pretty much any brush that comes to a fine point(if it's a round brush.) I also like for them to be kinda chubby near the ferrel. A few flat brushes are nice too (a 1/2", 3/4", and 1") I also really like having a big puffy makeup brush on hand.

when I went to the FABBULAS convention I saw a demonstration on using a Kabuki brush for bases--the coverage is amazing! I am definitely considering adding a Kabuki brush to my kit.

What is a Kabuki brush?

It looks kind like one of those brushes guys used to use to apply shaving cream to the face. It is a very short handled brush that is big and fluffy like a blush brush

The one by Vargas is the best kabuki brushes for bodypaint ever!

yep yep, if I can glide it down the inside of my thumb and it stays in a nice even point, I like it. Some pep have a thing for shoes... well I like those too but I really have a thing for a good brush.

I JUST got a kabuki brush on clearance. It was marked down from 17 bux to 3. Didnt know what I would use it for but it was good quality so I snapped it up. And then I find this thread. Claps for Erika !

They sell kubuki brushes here for chinese makeup...TBH not been that impressed, too soft mainly, but watched Yolanda use hers in Shanghai.
Think they will be useful for SOME sorts of bases but not all - ie will beat sponged areas for blending, but not the watery thin layers I sometimes like to do, etc. I'll stick to body chisesl at the mo...

Oh and my fave brushes they stopped making 4 yrs back, never really found any I liked as much so hop around a lot. I tend to have a set for blk, set for white & set for 'colours' with a round 2& 4, cats tongue rake, flat etc in each for speed. Every artist uses a different brush to get the same effects so its always interesting to see...

Does anyone have a source for those leather brushes?

Just as a FYI not the kabuki brush show in this thread and as advertised on the "big" face paint store as "Vargas" is not the same brush as sold and taught by Vargas (who has promoted the use of said brush for body painting) and reviewed in Illusion magazine. I have a brush he gave to Mark, who gave it to me, and have one I got from Vargas in Austria. The pics of those brushes are posted on one of my blogs. (not sure which one check on www.sweet-loretta.com - I'll be posting new blogs this weekend) We have the same brushes and I just got in the new angle kabuki brushes. Vargas says Royal will now make the inside of their brushed red to distinguish them.

I'm not writing domed brushes or other types don't work - just a clarification.

My favorite brand is Princeton. They are nice and firm, and last a long time. I still have ALL the ones I bough from last summer, and they ALL still work great.

As far as sizes... I use all kinds of brushes; rounds, flats, filberts, tiny little detail brushes...

Im loving the loew cornell 795 the only proble is I cant find them anymore..
does anyone know where I can find them or ones that are very similar to these?

I just bought 5 of those from sillyfarm. But you should try mark reid's brushes. The rounds... No 4 are amazing

When I was at Fabbulas working in Lucy Brouilard's class, she said to use short bristle brushes rather than the longer ones used for watercolor. Mark Reid's brushes are great to work with. I bought them at Fabbulas, but Im sure they are available on other sites. Lowle - Cornell brushes from Michaels are also nice and springy. They really hold lots of paint too so you don't have to re-load as often. I use the #4, #2, #1 and #6 rounds and it's good to have a good 1/2" flat brush for split cake work as well (making roses, etc.)

Metina sell the Mark Reid ones. Just bought 4 of them

My go-to brushes are:

Loew-Cornell 7000 Round in #2, 3, 4, 6 (these always seem to be sold out at my Michael's)
a pack of the Donna Dewberry 1-stroke brushes from JoAnn Fabrics, mostly flats but a few rounds in the pack and 1 scruffy brush that's good for stippling
Princeton Art #2 (cheap!)
Royal Soft-Grip #4
Royal Kolinsky Elite #6 (takes practice to get the sables going, but they're smooth once you do)
American Painter 4550 1/2 in flat - not my favourite flat, but works in a pinch. I find it just doesn't hold onto much colour
