Re: Just sharing a few....
If you mean the one in Ash's pics
Just blow up 3 260's (full but still soft- achieved by burping -or releasing a light puff blast of air out of the nozzle/mouth end- before tying the knot) of different colors twist a soft 1 inch bubble (twist at least 3 times - some people prefer 5 times) - take the 3 diff 1 inch bubbles and twist together (you could twist one bubble under another a couple of times to secure it better. ) Then begin "spiraling" - you have to kind of hold them a bit as you crawl your hands up turning them. Then twist another one inch softish bubble at the end of each different colored balloon. Inflate a heart balloon and tie or twist -(better if you take the nozzle and wind it around the bubble joint a few times.
It might be easier to do with 2 balloons first if 3 go all wild and are hard to hold on. Also some people do a very respectable heart wand by just inflating a single 260 (keep it soft with a 2 to 4 inch uninflated tail end) balloon and know before tying an inflated heart balloon on the nozzle/mouth end - then just do some flower petals (or loops) at the nozzle side end of the 260 under the heart at least 3,4, or 5 until the heart pulls in tighter and it looks good. I will try and do one quick to show you a pic.

Here's my princess wand:
4 full pumps w a ketchup bottle, and twist a series of bubbles until the air gets pushed all the way to the end of the balloon. Make the last bubble a pinch twist so it doesn't unravel, then wind the bubbles around the remainder of the untwisted balloon, then lock twist at the end. Add your two hearts and you're good to go!
This is what I made my brother for his 19th (legal drinking age in Canada):
And what I made my best friend for her 25th:
Those are definitely NOT line-work pieces!

So now we have alot of left over balloons just collecting dust.. Ashley- is it possible to explain how to do that twisty wand?? I hope its simple like you said I'd like to maybe make some of those to just tie on our canopy at gigs.
Yea, the twist is easy. Just inflate two 260's. Not all of the way though.. leave like 1" at the end uninflated, or just burp them so that they are nice and soft.
Now take your two balloons, twist the ends together so that you have like... one really long balloon.
Then, hold them up with two hand against each other and twirl them around each other.
Twist their ends together when you get to the end.
ALL DONE!
ALSO, watch this video... because the AMAZING Don Caldwell explains it so much better than I can!
Re: Just sharing a few....
thanks wyndy and ashley! That video really helps too...I think I can handle the twisty wand
That beer mug is awesome lol

Re: Just sharing a few....
Don't give up! Once you get all the little bits of how much to leave, burping the balloons and squeezing them after each twist to keep moving the air down, it is SOOOO much fun!
What kind of balloons were you using Deb? The balloons from the party stores will pop like crazy! Qualatex and Betalatex will take a lot of abuse!
Here is my latest birthday cake. I still need to work on getting the layers closer together and neater, but I am happy being that it is only my fifth one. This is in Disney's Bolt colors for a party tommorrow.
I LOVE the beer mug. So clever. I have some 160's, 260's and 360 clear balloons coming and can't wait to do some stuff with those!

Re: Just sharing a few....
Careful when weaving with the clear balloons Metina.. they pop like crazy, as do any other jewel tone ones from Qualatex!
Re: Just sharing a few....
...especially when it's hot out. I've nixed the ruby, mandarin and citrine, am done with quartz, sapphire and emerald as soon as I'm finished what I have, and will only order black, clear and POSSIBLY magenta jewel tones. I haven't decided on that one yet.
Re: Just sharing a few....
I only bought the clear ones in quantity and just have a mixed lot of the others. I do like the look, but really like the fashion and deluxe colors from Betalatex.
I am mainly thinking for accents, but the 360 for the rose in the glass effect. Have you seen it? Super neat!

LMBO, I just watched this video and I'm so amazed. I always thought there was some sort of magic way to insert the balloons, I'm truly amazed.

I am so glad you started this thread I don't know didly but know I wan to try.

Metina wrote:Honestly, I haven't learned a lot of one balloon items. The person I started learning from at jams always stressed the "wow" factor that a two, three and more balloons offer.
I guess this is another aspect of the biz I need to figure out. How to still "wow", but get through lines. I have only done balloons as a add on at parties, so there was no stress of getting through tons of kids. We just had fun making the three or 4 large sculptures I had learned, making sure all the kids got something.
What is a reasonable time for each child in a line. What should I be shooting for?

Wow, you have come a long long way from the first time I saw you twist. But you were a natural with it even back then. I know that the jams with Shonna are incredible. I think she can twist a 4 foot dog as quick as I can twist a 3 twist dog. She is incredible.
Are you going to Kapital Kidvention? She and her son Dustin will be teaching there this week, the 27th thru the 29th in Springfield Va. And MaMa Clown will be there too.

I got a great tip when starting out from some lovely guys. When you buy a mixed bag, sort out all the colours, then you'll know what colours you'll use more of and can replace them with a single colour bag. Stops you from buying every colour under the sun and not using half of them. Not that we'd ever do that with face paints.......

ummm I dunno, the long ones ...its been awhile I don't know the brand or what kind. I took them out of the plastic bag and now they are in a brown bag in the closet but I did buy them from the same place I get my face paints so I know they are the good kind that regular twisters use. My husband has big hands and just doesn't know his own strength and I guess thats why "pops" happened hehe.. Me, I just didn't have the knack for it or patience I guess but I would still like to do VERY simple stuff for maybe just bringing the b-day kid a flower or decorate our booth. You guys are awesome twisters!

That makes sense if you don't use a lot of balloons. I use so many of them though that I buy the carnival assortment of balloons and separate the colors... but I buy like.. 8 bags of them at a time.. my typical balloon order is about $200... and if Ryan and I order our balloons at the same time, then we're talking about $700 worth of balloons ordered all at once.. every few months!
balloons are definitely not as cheap as face painting!!!!!!!!!
Re: Just sharing a few....
Wow, I'm inspired by this thread. Always wanted to try twisting! Guess I'm going to have to order some stuff! Pray tell...... what is the best to start with as a beginner? Suggestions? Beginner kit?
Re: Just sharing a few....
Youtube to start!! balloon1twister (I believe) is great - Dave, I think his name is.
I order mine wholesale from Party Empire and Canuck Amusements, but they're both Canadian. I know a lot of twisters in the States use TY Myers (?), Balloons to You (www.btydirect.com), or - I think I looked up a Qualatex distributer in Florida...in Ft Lauderdale?
I'd start with a mixed bag of Qualatex 260's and a red ketchup pump!
Ashley - I'm the same...I can stop by with the intention of picking up, say, two bags - and leave $130 later. Pretty sure my last major balloon run (shipped in from Calgary, but free shipping if $250 or more!) was $900. But I have a fantastic amount of reserve stock in my office...haha.

Re: Just sharing a few....
Here are a few models I've made. Mostly from Thelma Levett's stuff but some from Twistina in the UK as well
Also the pictures were taken by my niece who is at college studying photography. I got her to take a load of pics one day and I'll be getting her to do more!

Re: Just sharing a few....
Nice stuff Glenda! I love Thelma and Twistina's stuff.....
Metina - You are a powerhouse - already weaving!!!
Krystal - Love the beer mug and the uber cute heart wand! perfect pearl bubbles are something I haven't quite mastered!
Ashley - Love the U cat-ipede thing!! Cool!
You are all bad influences!! ha ha ha ha! Ready to break out my balloons again. Mine have been ravaged by the kids! They love them!!! I get so cranky about them using them knowing they average 10 to 50 cents a piece! Facepainting is cheaper per child for sure. And most kids don't come back asking for a new one or another after they get them!!!!!

Whoa! 10-50 cents EACH??
If you're buying an average bag of Qualatex(100 count) then they cost .05 cents a piece. The expensive ones(like the agates) are something that I only use once in a while, not with every kid! The Betallatex ones(which are 50 count to a bag) cost about .05 each... actually they cost .053, so a fraction over 5 cents... The 350's by Qualatex are .07, almost .08 cents each... so that's a little closer to your estimate but still not quite 10 cents a piece.
So, if you're doing a 3 balloon piece(what I typically make) then you're spending about .15 cents per kid. Say that you do about 15 sculptures in a one hour party and you've spent $6.75 for the party. If you charged $80, then you've still done pretty well for yourself!
Now, that's not including ANY of the other costs... like a pump, gas, sharpies, all that good stuff.. And it isn't as cheap as face painting.. but it's still not a big expense!
Re: Just sharing a few....
The cheapest balloons that I have found on line are from http://www.larocks.com/balloon/balloons.htm If you order over 200.00 worth of balloons there is free shipping and it is the closest thing to whole sale that I have found over the internet.
Re: Just sharing a few....
It actually says $150 for free shipping. Have you ever ordered from them before? There prices are slightly cheaper than Tmyers and free shipping would be nice. But, I have ordered balloons from an outfit in Florida that had free shipping and I got what I paid for. They took forever to ship and didn't have half the stuff in stock. When I got my order they had sustititued Qualatex for many of the Betallatex I had ordered. I wasn't happy.
