Base paints

The brand of face paint I currently use is Snazaroo and i'm having trouble mainly with the white when using it as a base.
Any suggestions on what brand would be best for base coats?

Oh and i use make up sponges and they dont seem to work well for blending, any tips?

Snaz is usually excellent as a base.
White is notoriously difficult to create a smooth base.

Make up sponges grab onto to oil and deposit the pigment in a smooth blend for make up. Face paint is different. Face paint pigment is ameliorated with the wax or glycerin. A face painting sponge is much better suited for face paint. Snaz sells some sponges. While I love Fantasy World Wide sponges, I have cut inexpensive car wash sponges into wedges with an electric carving knife. Try using face painting sponges instead of makeup sponges and see if that helps.

Patting the face paint, instead of pulling with the sponge may help, if you aren't already doing that.

In the summer months, I love Mehron's powder based StarBlends for smooth bases. I apply them with a Lollipop Smoothie applicator (available in the FacePaintForumShop, the colourful rectangle in the top of this column). Have a look and see if there is something similar available in Australia. In my view, Denise Cold is the Queen of StarBlends, and has some YouTube videos on StarBlends.

I sympathize with you. I find Snazaroo white hard to deal with. Definitely listen to ^^ and get some face paint sponges, but if that doesn't solve your problem I would try Wolfe white or Paradise White (don't go for Kryolan).

I agree with using white starblends as a base, goes on light and really easy to apply, and not as easy to rub off and get smeared.

I invested in some sponges and it has made my life so much easier. I'm definitely going to check out the white starblends and get one.

i loved snaz soooooo much for bases that it took me A LONG TIME to try starblends.

don't make my mistake.

get some starblends ASAP.

i don't even use my snaz pallete as much anymore because the starblends give sheer but opaque looking coverage, it is INSANELY ridiculously fast to cover a full face (i'm talking full spipderman red in less than 4 seconds), and it doesn't get runny when kids are running around and sweating.


just do it.


there are some great deals on starblend that make it cheap!

I use tag white with no problem creating a base but there are lots of others that work well too. I find Snaz a bit 'chalky' at times and the cakes end up cracking around the edges pretty quick. Great for home use, but not for what I do. It's the brand I dole out to curious moms who want to try painting their kids at home because it's less costly and you can get it locally.

As for the sponges, I have tried MANY different types, and I found one that treats me right every time. In fact it's sold on facepaintforumshop.com

These are by far the best sponges I have used. They hold color so well, apply color better, clean up nice, bounce back to shape if squished. Purple seems to stain them the most, but that's a minor thing. I've replaced all my other sponges with these.

They say it's a poor craftsman who blames their tools, but I beg to differ. Some times having the right tools makes a world of difference!
