Masquerade Masks Empty Masquerade Masks

Post by Kristal Wed Jan 06, 2010 3:38 pm

I have a masquerade birthday booked for Feb (all adults!) which I'm stoked about, and I'm hunting for new ideas! I want to match/enhance what people are wearing, but I'd love to see the different masks you guys do, so I can have all of the ideas in my mind. I'm planning on masks and eye designs/embellishments.

Thanks in advance!

This is the dress she's wearing. Black and green. I'm thinking something saucy. I'll play with ideas, but, as always, would love to hear thoughts on a great mask for this dress!

Oooh, I want to see pics.

I haven't done any, but you-tubed it once. I ended up looking in the regular make-up people's tutorials, they had some good ones.

How about a silver mask with peacock feathers coming out the top and bottom on one side? Give the outline of the mask a 3D design for texture.

I did these with inspiration from masks. Any use?

Ooh, yes! Thanks for the suggestion and pix! I wish I had a metallix green...maybe I'll play with my green interferenz and see what I can come up with. Those are great, Lonewolf!

I'm always nervy about lining under eyes, though - just a steady hand is needed, I guess?

Lining under the eyes: for kids I do it with their eyes closes, taking the brush under the eyelashes. Gives a good result, near the eyes but without them being nervous.
For adults with open eyes and a little bit at a time, since the bottom lashes makes it hard to do a line in one stroke. A steady hand and a vision of where you want to line to be is a good start.

You can use eyelash glue and attach actual feathers.

cool dress - I think if she already has eye make-up on you may not have to line under the eyes - the examples she showed could just accent what she alkready has on...? maybe?

Jennifer! Your mask looks great.

I find when I add shading around the outside, and a border of some type it REALLY makes them pop. I just did two at a jam last week. But I don't have them posted yet, and the image buttons on this forum are wanky this morning

Have you tried going to GOOGLE, then click on IMAGES. Type in "face painting masquerade masks" and/or "face painting mardi gras masks"

Although, those images you already have an WONDERFUL!

I find that if the request is for a "mask" you can paint around the eyes so it looks like "eye holes" for the mask, thus avoiding the eye liner effect all together. If you add a touch of shadow to the top of the eye hole and bottom of the mask, with highlites on the top edge, it really 'pops'.

Google image or flikr search for venetian masks - I had to when hired for a ball and a party on that theme.
Some amazing stuff. Not sure if I still have the pics, was before I went digital...will look!

Would say for that dress try making a texture over the base with punchinella (you know the holed metal mesh) as would tie in to match that fabric.

Masquerade Masks Empty Re: Masquerade Masks

Post by Kristal Wed Feb 03, 2010 4:55 am

Good idea Cat! Thanks. Must search for meshy things...

One more last minute question...it turns out that I'm probably doing just the staff before the party, but she'd requested that any male bartenders etc have Phantom of the Opera masks - but in gold instead of white. I just tried it (Kryolan Intf Gold outlined with black) - and it was mildly bunk. Not sure if it's totally recognizable if it's not white, and I find the nose weird for some reason.

Does anyone have pix of painted Phantom masks?

Try putting gold glitter over the Kryolan gold if it is not gold enough. A little poof of it might make the gold pop more. I really have not found a great gold yet with the exception of the Mahron gold powder and the mixing medium

Masquerade Masks Empty Re: Masquerade Masks

Post by JBax Wed Feb 03, 2010 11:37 am

I did one in white for a girl, with a rose on the cheek... but not exactly manly.

What about doing a base in white, and edging in and blending in the gold from the edges, so it is less of a flat effect. Hmm... I wish I had my kit at work and could show what I was thinking. For the nose... I know what you mean... I would have the short side of the mask come down at least to the top of the side nostril, and the line would cross at an angle across the nose to the bottom of the side nostril on the opposite side... then down along the natural cheek line.

Am I making sense? (I can can use crappy scanner her and draw it if I have time) Maybe some crack lines to look old, or some fine delicate swirls to look fancy. If you're really into it, make a shadow underneath mask to make the illusion of depth.

If you don't have punchinella... try a mesh bag, like a garmet bag (I use one to keep sponges in, made great scales once), or the plastic stuff they bag oranges in.

Someone on this forum once recommended the Kryolan Inferenze Bronze as a great gold and they're right. I love it.

I do have the Inf Bronze and it is amazing! I was playing w the Gold but I could very well use Bronze...I also don't have gold glitter but I do have yellow - maybe that will help...(again, the Phantom masks are for men so I'll have to see how they feel about glitter at all...haha)

I did originally want to do them white, but the client has said no - the theme colours are red/black/gold (funny because she really doesn't care about what colours the femail servers/dancers wear...)

Jen - I think I get it (I think it was mostly the outlining below the nostrils that made it weird.)...outline above one nostril, and below the other - that would help!

I also think I'm going to keep hoping that most of the staff tonight are women!

Here's what I sketched (not exactly what I described, but I like the mask following the laugh line on the long side, but that's me).... and I think an antique-white might look good. A hint of gold, or a marbly look with gold or silver veining. Here's what I tell the clients.... TRUST YOUR ARTIST! If you go against your gut, it won't look as good.

(BTW... that took forever to post... the little monitor button with the disk in front of it isn't working right for me... normal popped up a second then what I think is the host's ad and I couldn't get to the place where you put the filename. I had to go the other route and figure out how to upload to my gallery and post a link... wierd)

You're a star! (In more ways than one - technology goes over my head sometimes o_0) I'm going to play with gold over white when I'm setting up.

I like that nose way more; will try that with one eye masked - and totally know what you mean with the laugh line.

I will hopefully get some good pix (or some pix at all) tonight!

Masquerade Masks Empty Re: Masquerade Masks

Post by Kristal Fri Feb 05, 2010 3:21 pm

So I really didn't do a whole lot of actual masks...haha. Vancouver women = generally far more about sexy eyes than a full out mask, and it's fairly tricky to get the men to get painted at all - or at least the first one!

Lot's of sexy eyes with gems and/or liquid bling for the women - and a couple of jewelled tiara bits joining the eyes, which may have been ask mask-y as it got - one gold phantom mask (which of course in retrospect, I could have done so much better), and a couple of half skulls. I know, not mask-y in the slightest, but they didn't want masks, and I figured that if it was a choice between half a skull and no face paint at all, that getting painted wins.

Everyone who was painted was happy - a mix of staff and some guests - although I didn't see my client at all (she's a repeat client, and we'd agreed on min 2 h to paint the staff, but if guests wanted to get painted and it went over, that was okay, too, and to play it by ear. But I was most deff hired mainly for staff.) and so she didn't get painted - but the guests all had their own masks anyway...I emailed her after and she replied with a "thanks so much" so I guess it was good on her end? I think too much sometimes.

The two pix I did manage to get:
