Metina's Dippy Pot
Metina once wrote in a Halloween thread about her super-white accents:
"I use DFX white, but one trick I use it to make a dippy pot. It is basically a small glitter container with a lid. I put a small amount of paint in it with boiling water(just a tad, you can always add more, but can't take away). Stir like crazy to get a nice thickness. Not too thick, but just a tad thicker than I would paint a line with. Usually have to reactive it each job and add paint, but it makes for super white dots and accents.
I keep this at each job. It is basically my own home made details. It is the thickness of the mehron liquid paint. But don't try the mehron for this, it isn't as bright. I tried to save time cause I had some. No dice"
So, I have questions, as I think I may try to make one.
1. Does this tad of boiling water melt the DFX to be able to stir, or should I chop up into small pieces first?
2. So, does it re-harden or stay liquidy? And when you re-activate with more water and paint, do you use boiling water again before you go to the gig?.
Thanks for all the awesome knowledge!

Re: Metina's Dippy Pot
Break the paintin into as many small pieces as you can. Only a dab of boiling water and stir with the end of a paint brush handle. Keep adding the water until it is the right consistency.
I just spray with more water to reactivate on jobs. It isn't a perfect system, but just makes the best dots ever.

Re: Metina's Dippy Pot
oh yes - i had made one when Metina had posted that and it works wonderfully! I made one in black and white - thanks for the tip Metina!
Re: Metina's Dippy Pot
I too have a black and white one thanks to Metina. Let me tell you! They make my work a lot easier! I've gotten to the point where I can make just enough for the job without having to have the wet paint sitting in a jar for days! I love having the perfect consistency paint on hand so I can move around the 'palette' without having to go back to the table for water.
Re: Metina's Dippy Pot
ooooooo. I'm def. gonna be making one of these. Thanks for the tip Metina. I've just got to think out a container I can pour boiling water in....

Re: Metina's Dippy Pot
If you have a dropper, this works the best. Slowly add the water. You can always add more, but can't really take it away. If you need the glitter container, PM me your mailing address and I will send you one.(once the mail starts running again) I am sure I have an extra one.

Re: Metina's Dippy Pot
Cool! I'm going to make a white and black one as soon as I find a suitable container.
Re: Metina's Dippy Pot
Oh wow, I used to do this with my black but had never thought of doing it with my white too!
Re: Metina's Dippy Pot
Does anyone have pictures of what they have made? I am totally a visual person and cannot envision what ya'll are talking about. Sorry....kinda slow. hehe

Re: Metina's Dippy Pot
So I made a black and white one tonight. I'm kind of flying blind as far as thickness though, since I've never used Detailz or Mehron liquid paint. Metina, I'd loooooooove to see a short little video so I can get a better idea of what consistency it should be.
Re: Metina's Dippy Pot
For the thickness, it should almost not drip off your brush.
Post pics of your dippy pots ladies.

Re: Metina's Dippy Pot
So do you leave it open for the entire job, or do you have to close it each time so it doesn't dry out?
Re: Metina's Dippy Pot
I leave it open.

Re: Metina's Dippy Pot
Love it! this would save so much time. I have a jar of eye cream almost empty, it would work great for this. BTW How often to you have to add more water?
Whoever came up with this idea is a GENIUS!

Re: Metina's Dippy Pot
Maggie, you're brilliant. I have been wanting to do this, but worrying about which type of container to use. An eye cream container would be great!
...now to go steal one from my mom.

I don't know if I should laugh or cry, wish I was young enough to steal one from my mom lol

Re: Metina's Dippy Pot

I'm going to add this trick to my list of things to do!!
Thanks!

Re: Metina's Dippy Pot
I use this method for getting a drop of white onto another color, to make flower petals. You end up with white inside the flowers
Re: Metina's Dippy Pot
Wow, totally just found this thread and I really want to try it now! I think I have some old white paint that I could use... and, like PJ, will probably have to go and snitch an eye cream container from my mom as well I think I'll try it out at my gig this Saturday!

Re: Metina's Dippy Pot
I finally tried this at a gig this past weekend and I LOVE it! My white was always getting goopy from having the water well in it so now I won't have to do that and ruin good paint
