Ruffles...any suggestions?
Any pictures of realistic ruffles? One stroke or other? I'm having a hard time making them look realistic and not just "wavy".
Re: Ruffles...any suggestions?
Maybe you could try to paint like making the hart of a rose (split cake technique) but not making the whole turn back but just a tiny bit. And placing the shade at the right spot. No idea if it really works. Good luck

Re: Ruffles...any suggestions?
Okaaayyyy...
I almost took my pants off for this,
until I remembered my "tattoo skin".
Step 1: draw inner straight edge of ruffle, then the squiggly swoops representing the outer edges of the ruffle.
Step 2: draw the lines representing the upper edges of the fabric turning away from you to the place where the fabric is attached.
Step 3: Draw the lines representing where the lower, inner edges of the fabric are turning away from you.
Step 4: Drop in the shadows
Step 5: Pop in the middle tone of the fabric
Step 6: Hilights
I have overly simplified the anatomy of a ruffle. I have ignored the cast shadow of the fabric, the penumbra of the shadow, the middle light. I did not account for light shining through the fabric. I have made it more graphic, and I did not refine it.
On a real job, I would block it out in a tan or gold color, and blend, blend, blend the colors together.
Happy Painting!

Good steps Fesspainter.
I highly suggest a class with Vagras on ruffles.

Aaaaannnnddd...
painting on real skin is much better than the dreaded tattoo skin.
I guess I should have taken off my pants for the cause and painted upon my upper thighs.

Talk about humiliating yourself for the Arts...
My youngest daughter walked in with her boyfriend and best friend after school....and...
here I am in the dining room with my jeans off
in front of the computer
painting the beginning of some ruffles on my leg.
Now, if Creabella asked me to jump off a cliff...
should I do that, too?
Holland backed her friends out of the direct view of my pantless self and left the house. I think it is time to put my pants on and start cooking dinner. I will continue humiliating myself tomorrow, when the kids are at school.
xoxo
P.S. My pants are ON while I am typing this... in case anyone wanted to know. Does ANYONE else do as many silly things as I seem to have done in the last little while?

I have permanently scarred my two year old during nap time. I was working on a particularly creepy version of the Cheshire cat when she was suppose to be sleeping. I heard a loud thump upstairs and took off without thinking. I burst in her room to catch her escaping from her crib... The look of hotter on her face said it all. On a good more she has not attempt Ed to escape since

Thank you,
I feel better.
I still have my pants on.

I was easy.
Creabella asked, and I just jumped in with NO tasty beverage.
Going back into my box now.

Why am I in the kitchen?
That was a very good tutorial on painting ruffles.

Well, I didn't have any chips, but I made lemon pepper wedges for dinner and that helped. /random segue
Re: Ruffles...any suggestions?
You guys need to stop having all this fun without me. Some of us are trying to sleep in and be lazy slobs and waste the day away watching stupid TV shows, ya know!
