'Low light Event' Gig! Anyone have lighting suggestions??
I posted this on a couple of different facebook sites too....definately a bit lost/overwhelmed! I'm doing a 'low light event'! I am being given an area/booth with hard walls. Approx 10 to 15 feet across...about 20 - 30 deep for painting and henna. No light, but access to electricity. Drunken Mardi Gras patrons. Need lighting ideas! Got the crowd control down, but really need ideas/visuals on what you guys do for full booth lighting or does this even ever come up?! Normally I'm in a well lit area if it's large, OR I have a small space where a good couple of clamp on lamps on a table do fine, or even smaller space where a headlamp is dandy...this is a full area!! Pic would be awesome!! LOL Thanks guys!!!! XXXOOO

I'm not sure, is this "low light" the aim of the party - in which case they would expect you to keep your booth lit sparingly too?

A 'low light event' means that the event itself has very little lighting...think dance floors and bar lighting in all common areas. The areas that are 'shops' along the 'french quarter' (which is where I will be) are not lit either. All shops have to provide thier own lighting! That includes me! I can be as bright as I want to be and am looking for a bit of flash on a budget. I'm thinking rope lighting, but I also really need to see!

Dear Mehndi Masala:
Our very own esteemed Shannon Fennell posted some pictures on FaceBook where she was wearing a head lamp. I have a similar one from Mountain Equipment Coop.
I have invested in Full Spectrum lighting for portraiture work on location. It is fabulous lighting. If I did not own it already, I would not invest that much money in lighting. Follow Shannon's lead. She is wise. And succinct.
Not like me. Why use ONE word when I can use seventy words.
xoxo
Happy Lighting.

LOL I have headlamps! 3 to be exact (sale at costco!)! But I really want a well lit booth to draw in clients like moths to flame! Just want to do it cheap! LOL
Re: 'Low light Event' Gig! Anyone have lighting suggestions??
I am normally cheap.
And I get easily drunk.
Now,
My lighting is not cheap.
Okay...
Off to drink more champagne.

Rayovac. Hunting/camping headlamp.
Go to Walmart... christmas lights are 50% off. Buy several strings of white, you could also get the mesh lights and drape them all over your walls. This will light up your booth for attracting the patrons (like moths). Then use the headlamp to light your work. You could decorate the strap if you prefer not to look utilitarian.

Got mine at Home Depot...I know Lowe's carries them as well.

Do you have an IKEA near you? They sell off their Christmas light strands this time of year, and they're often unique and pretty. Any basic lighting is attractive and then if you can hang one or two novelty lights to get people to say, "Oooh!" and come over, you should be all set.

Well Shannon! You would be proud! Went to walmart, got some 50% off xmas lights! Now I'm going to actually string them together sometime this week and see if I can see by them,....if not, no prob...headlamp city, here I come!!
Re: 'Low light Event' Gig! Anyone have lighting suggestions??
I think the Christmas lights would be really pretty. I like Ott Lights. Joann fabrics sells them here and right now they're on sale. Thinking about booth atmosphere, maybe hanging cloths to make it seem a bit tent like with twinkle lights would give an exotic vibe. I hope you get lots of well paying traffic!!

Can't add anything to the great advice here, but....could you post photos of your booth when it's all set up? Sounds like it's going to be SO beautiful!
I hope the gig goes wonderfully and brings you lots of business. x

Not sure how crafty you are and how much time you have, but I would make some really simple but BIG masks in papier mache - hang them around your booth and light them with the christmas leds.
There are some fabulous examples on the website of the Ottawa lumiere festival. Simple but very artistic!

Those huge masks are really cool but I won't have the time to put them up or the room to really display them I think. I will actually have an even better 'lay of the land' after this year and for next year!!
Re: 'Low light Event' Gig! Anyone have lighting suggestions??
I know looks are important, but I got some utility lights and bulbs for some outdoor after dark events, super cheap like $15, lit the whole tent up. You could put them under a lamp shade covered with a thin red/purple fabric to dull the brightness down and add some atmosphere if you wanted. No pics, sorry. Good luck!
Re: 'Low light Event' Gig! Anyone have lighting suggestions??
You stole the words from my mouth fairyfox. I use a utility lamp. They put off ALOT of heat so I always hang mine where little ones can't bump into it. I wouldn't suggest covering it though with all the heat it put off, but one lamp easily lights my entire tent.
