report on lead in face pants - how to discuss w/parents?
Hi there,
A friend of mine recently sent me this link and while it basically says they don't know if lead can be absorbed through the skin I would like to know how other people talk about this report if they are asked. I don't want to blow it off, because then it seems as if I am dismissing a parent's concern. Thoughts?

Thanks,
Katy

discussion here http://www.facepaintforum.com/general-face-painting-f1/toxic-face-paint-in-msn-article-t1296.htm
basically, their testing methods are in question and the levels they claim to have found are lower than what you'd find in your average glass of tap water.

If I have worried parents I have found that the fastest way of calming them down is saying "I spend a lot of time covered more or less in the paint, so I make sure it is the safest product out there". Works better than getting technical ;-)

Very true Lone. I'm ALWAYS painted when I work so I think I'll start to use that comment too when asked about the paints - as well as having the labelling and the MSDS with me!

I totally agree. I think something always comes out like this around Halloween. The media just loves to create drama when there is none and face painting is a great target.
I also mention that I paint my children a lot and wouldn't if it weren't safe. But rather than debate a parent, I always tell them if they are concerned, it is best to refrain from having the child painted.

I've posted on my blog about this... feel free to use it if you feel it helpful when dealing with parents/clients.

Thanks Shannon, I'll be sure to pass that along

I'm also wondering about the temporary tattoos you put on with water- wouldn't they have the same problem (trace metals in paint)?

The Always Alert Danish Health Department has tested temporary tattoos as well! *tadaaa* and found that nothing comes through the back covering, so they are safe =)

I am more interested in how the face paint MANUFACTURERS will respond.
If they are smart, they will have their own tests done, and have those available for those who use their products.
Snaz, which tested the worst of the lot, has the most to lose/gain so hopefully they will work something out.
I also would like to see the test reults of common women's cosmetic brands, desitin, baby wipes, sun tan lotion and shampoo tossed in there for comparison. I have a feeling the results would be similar and startling. But also good for comparison. I mean, good lord, people inject Botulism in their faces to get rid of wrinkles- and they are crusading against face paint???
I also think that from a "Show" perspective, being painted up yourself and taking the approach that "I wouldn't be wearing the stuff if I didn't think it was safe!" is smartest- and maybe even tag on "Of course I wouldn't EAT a pound of it!"

my aim is to just be prepared to answer valid questions and concerns intelligently and candidly- rather than giving this stuff any more press with my parents and customers.
