Jam report for you all :) Southern PA Face Painters... Empty Jam report for you all :) Southern PA Face Painters...

Hiya, I know you guys are always interested in what goes on in jams, well here is our report!

Two of us (myself and Debi - Rmplemntz) met - our 2 other regulars and 2 other potentials all had conflicts. But don't let anyone tell you that you need more than 2 to jam - no way. We had a whole cabana room at Bogey Macaws and *filled* it Smile We met for an hour and then painted for 2 1/2 hours, and had to close our line... a first for us (we normally run out of faces to practise on!).

We had a glitter tattoo demo (myself), ate some food, chatted about our next meeting (Sunday 1/30 at 4pm - Debi will demo Crin-Grins funky hair), decided to keep my weekly recurring Central Market gig as a "Guild" event (taking turns, whoever wants to do it - they get to advertise their business *and* the guild), talked about mixing up our location (one Sunday per month at Bogey's and one Sunday at another TBD location), and talked out the guild we are forming.

About our Guild... so far we have our 5-fold mission statement (I will post it elsewhere for you all to review/peruse), we have our Governing Body set, we have the "membership" portion of our bylaws completed, and we have guidelines on how to handle referrals from one painter to others (I will post this, too). We are forming this guild to solidify ourselves as a "group", to establish our standards, to be a unified strong force in the market, and (quite importantly) to be able to give ourselves "titles" to put on our business cards (ie: Barbie Smith, President of the Southern PA Face Painters Guild looks really good!). It is a lot of work, but so far quite enjoyable, and it really keeps our focus on the important stuff!

We really had a relaxed, fun time. We each brought photos of faces that we needed to practise (or had never done before, or for which we needed better photos for display boards) and so got some valuable practice. Debi may have booked a birthday party (?), and we enjoyed each other and our cute little customers. After paying for food and waitstaff tips, we each took home $10 in tips (yeah, we do not do this for the money LOL).

We started this jam in the fall. We did not know how to do it, and we were all still pretty new at FP'ing. But we just DID IT, and so can you! If you are on the fence, and can find at least one other artist, simply approach a venue with sample photos of your work, tell them you wish to have a space set aside for a one hour meeting, free drinks and an appetizer to share, and then you will paint the public for free! Everything figures itself out from there. It is more fun than you can imagine, and easier than you think. JUST DO IT. Smile

Warm regards,
Barbie

Thank you Barbie for updating the forum on our jam and our Guild. It has been wonderful getting to know you and the others. Even more so, it has been so encouraging to learn and grow within our small group. The jams are always educational, uplifting, and fun...what more could we want? I have learned so much already. I will be posting some of the photos of the jam later tonight, we had such a great turn out! ANyone who is on the fence as Barbie said.....go for it!! You will not regret it!!

I would like more information on how you went about starting this please. You can email it to me personally if you would prefer. I have been considering starting up a guild and would like to know how others do theirs. Thank you!

Terina - the biggest thing is to get over the "nerves". I was SO scared! I don't know why (now), but I was! I had only been painting a few months, did not think it was my place. But I was so wrong! The two main things are finding a venue (methodology mentioned above) and finding fellow jammers... the rest just kinda falls into place as you start getting together. I will cover "finding fellow jammers" here:

You definitely do NOT want to "train your competition". But you DO want to FIND your competition, become friends, pool resources/abilities/support. How to find them? Look at someone who is MAKING the EFFORT to be a pro. It does not matter if they actually are a "pro", but whether they are making the effort. Check for Craigslist postings, and all the party planning sites (partypop, gigmasters, etc.) and also of course a Google search. You actually only need one other person (yes, 2 for a jam is perfectly fine, and totally fun and worthwhile), but a few more an even better. But it is easier to start small.

As for the first meeting - just play a game for a meet-and-greet! (Google "get to know you games"). Then have everyone talk about how they got into face painting. Then explore each others kits (really, really fun!). 90 minutes will have passed without you even knowing it! Then have the waitstaff (if you are at a restaurant) go around to kids and tell them there is free pacepainting. BUT, do not let the kids pick their own designs. This is not the place to show off! This is where you practice designs that you need practice on. They are not paying for faces, so they get "artist's choice" faces Smile And voila, another hour or more has passed!

Then you schedule your next meeting (we couldn't wait another month, so we have been doing bi-weekly meetings!) and have someone do a demo (glitter tats, funky hair, balloon twisting) or watch a DVD together, or brainstorm marketing ideas. Also, maybe have a Monthly Inspirational Challenge, where everyone brings in a new design based on a theme previously decided on. Also, decide on a charity that you will donate a % of tips, etc. to. Your ideas will just naturally snowball.

The hardest part is finding the jammers and getting up the nerve to walk into a restaurant. But both of these are easier than you think!!!!

Honestly the hardest part is just DOING IT. So DO IT! You totally can. Trust me, if I can, anyone can. Really!

Thanks Barbie! I will get together some questions.I have called some local painters in the area, we are sort of spread out a little bit not too much though, just merely by counties. I think networking is great!
