Barrier Spray

While working a trade show this weekend, one of the crew guys who sets up for concerts etc (I know there's a name, but it's eluding me right now!) came up and asked if I'd be able to paint some of the crew up like KISS for their concert. I said yes, give me a call and we can talk about when/where etc. He mentioned getting sweaty (hauling stuff around does that to you!), so I made a mental note to look up barrier sprays or something...

I thought there was a barrier spray post around here somewhere, but I can't find it...

At any rate, spray suggestions? Does it go on the skin before you paint, or after as a sealant? (Sp?) I'm probably going to head to Studio FX tomorrow and chat with the gal there about it, but wanted to see who here has used it, what brand(s), and how it was!

You can use No Sweat on the faces before applying the makeup. There are fixatives and barriers sprays that con be used before and after makeup application, such as Mehron's barrier/fixative apray, Ben Nye's Final Seal, or Green Marble Selr.
You could also look into using grease makeup and setting it with powder.

I've never used it, but I just learnd a little about it this weekend, when I was at the shop talking with the owner about the Ben Nye products. They were telling me about using the barrier spray to cover tattoos, too. If I remember right, layer barrier spray, paint, barrier spray, paint, and barrier spray. Like three layers will cover a dark tat, they said. And, obviously they were trying to sell me on Ben Nye products. But, extra usefulness.

I don't bother with it. I did try Mehron's once but it ended up making the tattoo (done freehand with Reel Creations Inks) actually deteriorate FASTER. And I did follow the directions.

I've found that if I want something to last that using cream oil-based make-up and powedering it to set, will last for all day without any problems...

How about a barrier type of spray so the paint will not rub off onto furniture after it is dry? Any ideas? I painted a little girl over the weekend who rubbed her face against the couch by accident

As I don't use creme/grease products, I don't particularly want to buy any just for this one time.

So I went in to Studio FX and walked out with Ben Nye LiquiSet. She said to mix it with my paints instead of water, and I can spray some on before and after makeup application, and it'll work.

Time to try it on myself! Soon, anyway...

...took all my willpower to not buy more Kryolan...I have a drawerfull of replacements already!

I mainly face/ bodypaint in steamy Hong Kong & even here don't really like to use barrier sprays etc.

The thing with no-sweat et al is they stop your model sweating which is the way a body cools down. If you stop that happening there is an increased chance they will overheat and pass out...would love to know the % of models passing out at the World BodyFest etc that had been sprayed to those that hadn't.

Anyway if I have to I use a fixier/ fiaxtive spray (even strong hairspray) OVER the paint and that helps a lot. Well ventilated room, shut models eyes and get out asap of course! Did a gig where I painted 2 in 1 studio, shoot there, 1 hr car trip to laoction shot and back to 2nd studio for a diff shoot and they were fine - many fine coats of hairspray!

I also tend to bodypaint with DFX / Grimas which seems to have better staying power/ smudge resist than Snazaroo.

Other problem is once you fix something its awful to get off. Hairspray OK but have heard horror stories of Green Marble, etc.

Barrier sprays do work. They are made for water activated makeup.
They are not made for use with tattoo makeup - so yes Mehron's Barrier Spray (and Fixer) will remove an alcohol based tattoo. There are special barriers, sealers and fixers for different kinds of applications such as water activated face paints vs airbrush or freehand tattoo paints/inks. As for fixers not all brands work well with all brands of paints - so that may hold true for barriers.

For face art Mehron Barrier Spray can be used under or over the traditional face paint make-up. I've never known anyone to get Ben Nye's LiquiSet to work! But I have used and like their Neutral Set Powder - now I use Kryolan.

I prefer to fix my paint after rather than use a barrier before. Although I do like to use a neutral set to powder along the hairline. On the face I use hairspray only on myself, an occasional model, but I'd use it on a bunch of roadies.

I have seen tattoos hand painted and airbrush slide right off when fixing sprays were applied. Remember they are meant to be removed with alcohol and that is the main carrier in fixing sprays.
